Wow, I'm guessing this is gonna be popular thanks to me title choice. Still, I was thinking just to get this area of the forums going again we could have some essays and see who performs the best and then put it up on our new site? Is that okay lead admins? |

If I'm not mistaken, and I very well could, I believe Turtle would like us to write an article on any kind of TES Lore, and then we can all dissect and discuss it. Sort of like our Lore Contest I think, but in this instance just for fun. And yeah, this is fine, Turtle.

Hey I'm lazy here's this: On a recent trip to the Imperial City of Cyrodiil, I made point to take into account the statues that dot the city itself. Never before have I realized they may not be as haphazardly placed as I previously presumed. Traveling along the outer districts of the wheel, counter-clockwise, the statues and their placement suggest a lesson in history of sorts, traveling forward through time. Talos Plaza: The Beginning of Time Placed in the center of Talos Plaza, the western most district of the Imperial City, is a statue of Akatosh, the God of Time, in his dragon form. His wings are unfurling, appearing as if he is just being born. I believe this symbolizes the start of time itself, the birth of the Time God, Akatosh, Auriel, Ruptga, etc. One might ask why this plaza is named after Talos then. The dragon is in its center, likely symbolizing the dragon-blood flowing through his veins. One may also find it odd why it does not begin with the two original spirits, Anu and Padomay. I shall revisit this later. "At first the Aurbis was turbulent and confusing, as Anuiel's ruminations went on without design. Aspects of the Aurbis then asked for a schedule to follow or procedures whereby they might enjoy themselves a little longer outside of perfect knowledge. So that he might know himself this way, too, Anu created Auriel, the soul of his soul. Auriel bled through the Aurbis as a new force, called time. (1) The Temple District: The Gods Form Previously, nothing stood in the Temple of the One save for the Dragon Fires lit by Alessia’s covenant, protecting Tamriel. Now, a gigantic, mysterious statue of “The Avatar of Akatosh” stands in its place. Eye-witnesses have told me that it was there that Mehrunes Dagon and a flaming Akatosh battled, most believing this to be the end of the Oblivion Crisis. This region is confusing. At first glance one may think it symbolizes Akatosh, or possibly the creation of Aedra and Daedra because of the battle which took place. The latter though is along the right lines. The Temple of the One is obviously First Era, when the order of her Alessia’s namesake spread Maruhkati teachings of one supreme being comprised of all gods and spirits called “The One.” The symbolism here is in fact all the gods, and their lunge into existence after the first god. "With time, various aspects of the Aurbis began to understand their natures and limitations. They took names, like Magnus or Mara or Xen. One of these, Lorkhan, was more of a limit than a nature, so he could never last long anywhere. " (1) The Arboretum: The Beginning of the Mundus In the Arboretum (which I might add is simply stunning) are statues of the Nine Divines, arranged in a circle. On the western side are Zenithar, Kynareth, Akatosh, and Arkay. Julianos, Stendarr, Mara, and Dibella are on the eastern side. Standing in the center is Tiber Septim, anon Talos and the rest of his slew of names. It is believed that Talos took up the place of the Missing God in the Cyrodiilic Pantheon by mantling and portraying himself as his role. Thus, Talos’s statue here takes on the role of Lorkhan, as well as Nirn itself, surrounded by the gods and their respective planets, which are the same things. The Arboretum thus represents the Mundus or Mortal Plane "This was a new thing that Shezarr described to the Gods, becoming mothers and fathers, being responsible, and making great sacrifices, with no guarantee of success, but Shezarr spoke beautifully to them, and moved them beyond mystery and tears. Thus the Aedra gave free birth to the world, the beasts, and the beings, making these things from parts of themselves. This free birth was very painful, and afterwards the Aedra were no longer young, and strong, and powerful, as they had been from the beginning of days. " (2) The Arena: The Alessian Revolt In the Arena district, two giant statues stand guard over the entrance to the arena itself. To the south is the Slave-Queen Alessia, to the north is The First Breath of Man, Morihaus, in his unusual mannish form. Here, Alessia holds shackles in her hands. It should be fairly apparent what the Arena represents, the time of Alessia and Morihaus when the Nedes overthrew the Ayleid slave masters ; the most important event in Cyro-Mundic history. "The slave rebellion of Alessia in the 242nd year of the First Era is a seminal event in the history of Cyrodiil, and all of Tamriel. While humans and Elves had been battling in Skyrim for some time and the Slave Queen's revolt could not be called the first victory of men over mer, it represents a turning point in the continental power structure. " (3) The Market District: The Red Kings Watching over the merchants and beggars along the streets of the Market District are two giant statues of the emperors Pelagius I and Uriel III. Even they specifically follow the chronological counter-clockwise order of the rest of the statues. Southward is Pelagius I, who was the son of Tiber Septim himself. His reign was during the early years of the Third Era, and was tragically too short. Following Pelagius is Uriel III, who was the controversial Emperor who tore Cyrodiil apart in the War of the Red Diamond. His reign lasted from 3E 121 to 3E 127. "The Emperor's grandson, Pelagius, came to the throne. Though his reign was short, he was as strong and resolute as his father had been, and Tamriel could have enjoyed a continuation of the Golden Age." "The weakened government had little defense against Uriel's determined aggression, and capitulated after only a fortnight of resistance. Uriel took the throne that same evening and proclaimed himself Uriel III, Emperor of Tamriel. The year was 3E 121. Thus began the War of the Red Diamond" (4) The Elven Gardens: The Future The Elven Gardens are surprisingly devoid of any obvious statues or symbolism, but there are two possibilities I can see. As earlier mentioned, the Elven Gardens may represent what is before Akatosh and the rest of the Gods and Aurbis, the two beginning spirits, anon Anu and Padomay as well as other names which could be listed for hours. These beings are nearly absent and have little importance in Cyrodiilic mythology and philosophy. On the other hand, it may represent what is yet to come, the future of Cyrodiil, the future of Tamriel itself. Perhaps, with the Fourth Era now in session, we shall see the Elven Gardens filled with statues of new heroes from new events. Perhaps its very name gives a hint to the future rulers of Cyrodiil. Was this the intention of the creators and inhabitants of the Imperial City, who have been numerous and dissimilar throughout history? You, the reader may be the judge of that. Muthseras, I'm going to double dip and post the following, which I originally wrote in response to a What is Chim thread. ****************************************** "CHIM" Muthseras, You have deigned to undertake a perilous voyage, for to arrive at the answer to CHIM is to simultaneously experience it, and thus we herein find our first obstacle. Nonetheless, JHUNAL and his glory is not for the faint-hearted, and a purposeful stride towards understanding shall surely favored by the Aedroth of Knowledge. Therefore, let us begin first with a caveat: what shall follow is not "the answer", for such a bright-line response has not been supplied, and what we shall end up with will be merely a conclusion based upon what evidence we have. And because it is inherent in the nature of deductory conclusions to allow for debate and dissention, I will trust that you, the reader, if not satisfied, will continue onward towards your own conclusion. To begin, let me state that what hinders most people in their search for understanding CHIM is that they forget to acknowledge that some sources describe the "syllable" and others describe the state of being, botch called "CHIM". PART ONE: "CHIM" AS A LETTER "CHIM" is both a syllable and a sigil (i.e., alphabetic character) from the language used by the gods who ended up being the Earthbones, called the Elnofex. "From the Ehlnofex: an ancient sigil connoting 'royalty', 'starlight', and 'high splendor'. As with most characters of that dangerous language, the sigil CHIM constantly distorts itself. Those scholars that can perceive its shape regard it as a Crowned Tower that threatens to break apart at the slightest break in concentration." (Vehk's Teachings, "More On The Psijic Endeavor") Notice that the letter is described as being in flux or changing, which means that the letter on paper is hard to read or visualize. What throws most people off is that they forget that MK actually took the time to describe what other, more lazy, authors would have simply described as "a magic language". That's it, nothing really show-boaty about it. As a matter of fact, remember that the elves claim descent from those same gods. (see e.g. The Monomyth) Few people from around Tiber Septim's time could even read the stuff that elves wrote because it was so chock full of magical characters that most readers would experience some nasty things if they tried. "...so inextricably linked with dangerous theosophist numeral-symbolism that much of what is recorded here requires... sorcerous precautions on the part of the reader. [Hidden magic] is everywhere incorporated in their writings... signs and preternatural runes and [correspondences]... in expenditure columns, even, or margins [that] can be fatal to the uninitiated. Crucial pages were covered with the spittle of the previous translator, who had babbled idiotically over the text for days before catching fire." (PGE, 1st ed., "The Aldmeri Dominion") Thus we have solved the first part of your query and concluded that the character "CHIM" is a magical letter from the god language that is hard to perceive to the uninitiated. PART TWO: "CHIM" AS A STATE OF BEING What is "CHIM" as a state of being? We have several descriptions to turn to, so let us list them for the sake of convenience: "CHIM. Those who know it can reshape the land. Witness the home of the Red King Once Jungled." (Mythic Dawn Commentaries, Book Three) And Talos said to his army, "I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this land which is mine." (From The Many-Headed Talos) CHIM is "a process of apotheosis, where time itself is bent inward and outward into 'a shape that is always new'", and anyone who manages to achieve this state "experiences an ineffable sense of the godhead, and escapes the strictures of the [Aurbis]." (Vehk's Teachings, "More On The Psijic Endeavor") Now, before we proceed, please remember that the sigil CHIM is described as a crowned Tower by those who can see it. Hereinafter do we proceed with deduction. The Tower is crowned due to royalty. Metaphysically, the Tower "is the existence of the True Self within the Universal Self." (Vehk's Teachings, "...the Tower") Nonetheless, it is not the Tower that CHIM represents, it is the secret within the Tower that we crave. Conclusion 1: The state of being CHIM is "the Tower's secret". But what is the Tower's secret? Vehk describes it for us when he says "How to permanently exist beyond duplexity, antithesis, or trouble. This is not an easy concept, I know. Imagine being able to feel with all of your senses the relentless alien terror that is God and your place in it, which is everywhere and therefore nowhere, and realizing that it means the total dissolution of your individuality into boundless being. Imagine that and then still being able to say “I”." (Vehk's Teachings, "...the Tower") Conclusion 2: The state of being CHIM is returning to the point in space/time where Akatosh and Lorkhan separated into the two beings from which everything else came. Lorkhan is known as the "Space God", which makes the following passage easier to read. "The Aedroth Aka ... is completely insane. His mind broke when his "perch from Eternity allowed the day" and we of all the Aurbis live on through its fragments. In the ... self-applause that followed ... is it any wonder that the Time God would hate the same-twin on the other end of the aurbrilical cord, the Space God? ...every experience (that is, everything) born from that primal wail ... and all the magic that would need to spring forth just to hold it together ... from the need to exist (axial, along its two-headed fighting rays, each refusing their origin point, that is, Tower), ...and in the end ...it all becomes a lobotomized ...reptilian ...and massive map-god ...drooling ...on his countless knees, dementia given dimension, dimension dementia... " (et'Ada, Eight Aedra, Eat The Dreamer) Thus we have Akatosh and Lorkhan pulling away from one another from a central point, which geometry fans know would be called two "rays". That central point is the Tower, and when one returns to it and realizes that the battle between Akatosh and Lorkhan is really their battle. Now we know why it is Vivec that seems to know so much about CHIM: he is the Thief, and the Tower is one of its charges (i.e., something that it protects). The Thief represents "the taking of the Tower's secret". Finally, we come to understand that the answer to your query is this: It's just you, my friend. It's your world. Do with it as you wish. Breathe in the royalty. Or do not. Your only judge is yourself. I hope that my endeavors have shed some light upon the subject. I wish you the best on your endeavors, whether they be Psijic or otherwise, for I remain... Yours in the Scrolls, ___The Word Merchant of Julianos ****************************************** |
| Come to me, JULIANOS, for without you, my wit is weak to sort the wheat from the chaff, and my eyes should neither know the true from the false, nor sense from folly, nor justice from prejudice and interest. | |
