A while ago, I had a heated argument over why Dunmer are blue and have red eyes.
I was saying it was because Azura cursed the Chimer into Dunmer.
My opponent said "IT R NOT NOWN. IT R NO CANON", stating thatthere are countless theories that prove otherwise.
He, along with the dunmer's characteristics, seemed to think EVERY other thing I know about dunmer is wrong.

So, how much do we really know about the Dunmer?
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

From what I understand, Azura did in fact curse them (then they were the Chimer), because of the rumored murder of Nerevar at the Battle of Red Mountain, by the hands of the Tribunal. She was so disgraced that she "turned their skin as black as the Ashlands and their eyes as red as their hearts."

I've also read that this is merely a fable to make up for a more biological theory due to natural causes after the Red Mountain erupted.

*awaits B-rad for confirmation*

Note, however, that before the "curse", the Chimer already referred to themselves as Dunmer: Chimer was a name invented after the curse for pre-curse Dunmer.

Doesnt dumner mean cursed ones or changed ones or something like that? Or maybe thats what Chimner means
“To be humble to superiors is duty, to equals courtesy, to inferiors nobleness.”

In the reflection of your glasses lies the luminescent screen of the television
projecting unto your synapses the distorted vision from behind the eyes of
corporate contrivances pleading between their cold metal fingers for control
which in your advertisement-enslavement you repay tenfold whilst the world
spirals into oblivion around your desensitized body and in this cacophonous
euphoria we all die and we all die alone.

Dunmer means cursed ones, yes, but Chimer means changed ones.

Looking that up, however, TIL says I'm wrong: Chimer were indeed called Chimer when they were Chimer.

Chimer were called Chimer ("Changed Ones") because they left the Sumurset Isles (Yes, I prefer that spelling) and started worshipping the Daedra, thus changing religion.

OMG, Mortazo sp33kz like that??? I am now embarrassed that I quoted him in another discussion regarding CHIM. :o

firecrothes ... lol = = I love Brian's brand of lore teaching. Paws n IM had nothing on Brian, he holds his own I'm sure. I must go to the BGSF Lore Forum just for an entertaining read sometime.

As far as I have always heard it was Azura who cursed the Chimer for their treachery and turned their skin dark like the ashlands and their eyes red like Red Mountain. Also the ashstorm eruptions caused biological changes. And both these true occurences transformed the Chimer into the Dunmer.

Probably why they are so dour and grouchy and scratchy-voiced too.

**Edit Oops typo! Thanks for catching that

Then Azura came forth anyway and cursed the Tribunal for their foul deeds. She told them that she would use her powers over dusk and dawn to make sure Nerevar would come back and make things right again. But the Tribunal laughed at her and said that soon they would be gods themselves and that the Chimer people would forget their old ways of worship. And Azura knew this would be true and that it would take a long time before her power might bring Nerevar back. "What you have done here today is foul beyond measure and you will grow to regret it, for the lives of gods are not what mortals think and matters that weigh only years to mortals weigh on gods forever." And so that they might know forever their wicked deeds Azura changed the Chimer into Dunmer, and their skin turned ashen and their eyes into fire. "Let this mark remind you of your true selves who, like ghouls, fed on the nobility, heroism, and trust of their king."

That's from Nerevar at Red Mountain. The Battle of Red Mountain says this though:

And then, in that moment, all Chimer were changed into Dunmer, and our skins turned ashen and our eyes into fire. Of course, we only knew at that time that this had happened to us, but Azura said, "This is not my act, but your act. You have chosen your fate, and the fate of your people, and all the Dunmer shall share your fate, from now to the end of time. You think yourselves gods, but you are blind, and all is darkness." And Azura left us alone, in darkness, and we were all afraid, but we put on brave faces, and went forth from Red Mountain to build the new world of our dreams.

which you can take however you like

I would also think that.
But, in fact, it was Sanguine Shade (A.K.A. Lokithecruel) back at Great House Fliggerty.
He's Gone now. He just... Left.
He didn't like me at all :P
He argued when I said I wanted to write a Forum Scholars Guild article thingy about the history and culture of Morrowind.
I never did get to that....

Although he was just as stubborn as Mortazo.

EDIT:
Oh, and Thanks guys, I think you've proven him wrong.
