The Aylied Empire was destroyed by the rebelling slaves under Alessia and Pelinal. (of KotN fame) After that, the Dwemer and Dunmer fought the War of the First Council and the Dwemer vanished.

In the reflection of your glasses lies the luminescent screen of the television
projecting unto your synapses the distorted vision from behind the eyes of
corporate contrivances pleading between their cold metal fingers for control
which in your advertisement-enslavement you repay tenfold whilst the world
spirals into oblivion around your desensitized body and in this cacophonous
euphoria we all die and we all die alone.

Haha ya. I think I would have a different attitude towards them If I had the time to sit for about 2 hrs, and research all the what not about them, unitl then, I would have to agree.

What I know (or what I think I know) is that the dwemer bound their souls to some machine in an attempt to make themselves immortal. This was disastrous and they were all obliterated and turned into ash, and now they're gone. I also heard somewhere that they were sent into another dimension.

i always thought that (addition to Vicky D) when the Dwemer tried to make themselves uber-powerful, the gods struck them down and desroyed their whole race.

but idk, i dont really think that Bethesda has made it clear what happened to them. i also think that they didnt tell us everything because it will be revealed to us at a later time (TESV)

It's already been revealed as far as it is going to, and the devs are either of the opinion that enough hints were dropped to allow the confident to come up with the answer, or they don't like the answer and think that it is vague enough to let people supply their own.

But here is the long explanation, which is all but verified: http://www.imperial-library.info/fsg/luagararticle1.shtml

As for the ghosts, they probably died during the war and thus stayed behind. Death must have been downright awful for the Dwemer, because there was no consolation for it, not even the notion of the cycle of life and the natural way of things.

I loved running around trying to make sense of what happened, and from what I understood, the Dwemer turned into dust as a result of a failed attempt to use 'the heart' to become deities, however the reason the one with corpus is still here remains a giant question mark
