I think we can all agree that the majority of people want the next Oblivion to have a multiplayer option included, making the game: a) More interesting. Players not only have the freedom that was in the previous editions, but can now interact with other people from across the world. b) More entertaining. Doing quests on a co-op mode sounds mighty appealing to me. c) More fun. Let's face it. Who doesn't love a good owning session to teach those noobs who's boss? But of course it would also make the game: a) More harder to make. The game engine would have to be huge, and it would be susceptible to lag and even more glitches than ever. b) More harder to play. As someone said in a previous thread, what's the point of online playing if some uber-dude that's been playing non-stop since it came out met you and just flicked your head off in one swipe. c) More focused on multiplayer combat and action than roleplaying. I suspect that Bethesda will concentrate on the multiplayer section of the game primarily, meaning the storylines, plots, characters and roleplaying aspects will suffer. My suggestion: Why don't we have the Arena as a little shoot-off multiplayer option of Oblivion, that when you enter becomes like an online tournament competiton. Outside the arena Oblivion is still single-player, retaining the quests and roleplaying aspects of the game, but when you enter the Arena it becomes online and is a place where you can challenge your friends and other people to duels. Of course you could still have the ranking system, with the person with most wins being Grand Champion and so on. The only problem with this I can think of is that for a stealthy character, the Arena may not be a good option, so we could have four different areas of the Arena, one beneficial for a warrior-type person, another for a mage and archer and a fourth for a thief. Anyhoo what do you think? P.S sorry if it's been suggested before .

Most MMOs are not free-for-all PvP where anyone can attack anyone. EVE and Darkfall are what pop into my head, but nothing much else. I don't think an Elder Scrolls MMO would be free for all 'kill anyone any time'. It'd most likely have certain areas with PvP enabled, and the rest of the world open. Or, it could do like Guild Wars and have instanced zones for better storyline experience(I think that an Elder Scrolls MMO would need to be something like this to succeed; everything else would turn into a 'kill 10 wolves, gather 30 wood, kill 5 elite goo' typical MMO quest-grind-game. Anyone who has played a lot of MMOs should know what I mean.)
As I say above, unless it's done somewhat like Guild Wars with instanced questline content...a lot of the aspects that brought people to the Elder Scrolls series will suffer.
In single player, you can use the console to give yourself all the best items, stats, etc. Fighting ubered-up cheat characters versus each other would be pointless, and I know people would do that

That's why there's a challenge system. You said it yourself that most MMOs aren't games where anyone can attack anyone. |

Ah, well you didn't mention that. (You did mention an arena) Well then, that's the 'duel' mechanic in most online games, no reason not to have it...I'm sure I wouldn't enjoy an Elder Scrolls online game unless some key issues (as stated above) were avoided. So many MMOs and all have the same things that push me away... Edited by Ashiraniir, Jul 6 2009, 05:58 PM.

Yeah, if they just had an arena kind of thing, I'd be really happy. Or if they had 2 player multiplayer where you could adventure with a friend, that would be fun too. |

Depends whether Bethesda have a better one. I'm trying to think of an example to provide you guys with a better perspective of my idea but I just can't find one. Imagine this though, the next Oblivion you just wander into the Imperial City to find yourself standing before the familiar circular, colossal building of the Arena. Activating its huge doors sends you down to bloodworks, where you meet Owyn again. He offers you a choice, Duel or Challenge. Duel will pit you against another Oblivion player from across the world of the same statistics and level, and as a rule you will have to wear an arena raiment, but choice of weapon, shield and helm are still the players to make it fair. If you win, you get some gold, you lose, you have to forfeit the gold to pay the winner. There could also be a betting option to gamble money or maybe even items on yourself, thus allowing you to win (or lose) more money. You could also introduce a ranking system with potential privileges such as the higher rank you are, the better raiments there are to choose from and the more gold you win or something along that lines. I don't see anyway to cheat without exploiting glitches, but if Bethesda do it well, there won't be any. it depends what you consider as 'cheating' I suppose. Of course having some weapon that kills instantly would be unfair, but there isn't a weapon that does that. Having a weapon that say... paralyzes is not cheating, it's just good foresight on the player's behalf to choose that weapon for battle. Choosing the Challenge option however, allows you to challenge a friend that's online to become your enemy temporarily and fight you in the Arena. The players will be allowed to wear whatever armour, apparel or weapons they wish, and no money is won (unless it is bet upon) but the players may loot each other's corpses after the fight. If people do not want to lose their most precious items, there could perhaps be an option where the loser gets to retain one item of their choice (like in Runescape you keep three items when you die). What do you think? |

Oh okay. For some reason I was always under the impression that most people wanted an Oblivion game that was multiplayer. Personally I'd rather have it a single-player too, it was just my idea if that it were going to be multiplayer, that was what I'd want it to be like rather than a full-blown shindig such as WoW.

I was originally against an MMO TES - however my opinions have kinda changed - I dont mind singleplayer games, but I find that MMOs hold much more play value (/prepares to fend off waves of angry modders). I've spent countless hours playing WoW - much more than I could ever spend on Oblivion (granted I play vanilla), simply because I can socialize and simulate relationships with other people that no NPC can sustain, and therefore there's always something new I can do with my friends and guild, be it a new raid, a new arena team, or simply just hanging about having a laugh with the guild. Why do something on your own when you could do it with other people, provided they dont affect your experience negatively? That is why I personally find even mods bore me eventually, because despite their tonnes of extra content it all gets kinda lonely ![]() So after that ramble, I guess in short what I'm trying to say is TES multiplayer (even just co-op) ftw in my opinion. |

Lol it's actually not at all that bad (in WoW at least) - all the people who act like pricks/noobs get shunned and flamed, and therefore cannot access the end game group content, and so eventually 'fizzle out', just leaving the amiable casuals and the hardcores. Yea sure you always get some people who act up, but they're so few, they're more a form of entertainment now, as you watch them fail over and over

I don't think so. I fell Multiplayer takes too much from the single player aspects of every game that has both. Great case is the champions of norrath series (PS2 games for those who don't know) The game's story and play suffered mightily from the multiplayer options. They had the great potential to be a great counsel RPG by an American developer but basically turned in to a beat-em-up game with elves and goblins. Now I can understand why SOME games have multilayer, I mean a shooter would get really old after one or two play troughs without it, but the growing trend of every game having multiplayer is a travesty.Games like the Elder Scrolls, Bioshock, Resident Evil and Fallout are more of a single person experience for the story and the sense of isolation in the cases of the the last 3. As seen with RE5 the action paced multiplayer action is hurting the series. Don't believe me? try playing that game with out a friend, Sheva will drive you insane from her incompetence. I am highly apprehensive about Bioshock 2 because of the multiplayer, I know it isn't a main focus but all I have read about it is talking about the multiplayer applications it has and that means something was left to lag and that is normally story and ambiance, two things that first drew me in to Elder Scrolls and the Fallout series. |
