Seven people have been killed and 20 others injured in a shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, the US Army has confirmed.

One person has been arrested and at least one more is reportedly on the loose. The base has been locked down.

NBC News network said the two suspects were in military uniform and that the shooter-at-large was believed to have a high-powered sniper rifle.

Fort Hood, located near the town of Killeen, is a large US military base.

Home to about 40,000 US troops, it lies halfway between Austin and Waco, about 60 miles (97 km) from each city.

It is not yet clear whether those reported killed and injured are civilians or military personnel.

Local congressman John Carter, speaking to NBC News, confirmed that there had been a shooting at the base, saying the gunfire had erupted during a graduation ceremony.

The BBC's Adam Brookes in Washington says there are military police and Swat teams on the scene, and the FBI is on the way. Schools in the area have also been locked down.

---

Thats absolutely crazy. Apparently another person is still at large.

I meant 7, can someone fix that?

Just read about it on Twitter. Bad stuff. I wonder what the motives were, was it political, was it mental, etc.

Edited the title, btw.

I'm curious whether or not it was soldiers involved. If so, it goes back to the trauma and stress soldiers go through that not too many people take into consideration. I'm giving ANYONE an excuse to kill, I'm just pointing something out. Kind of a coincidence it happened at graduation?

Dammit, Vanir...... I had an awesome daydream of me and Anne Hathaway on a private island. And then in the daydream you came in and murdered her, then asking for my hand in marriage.

Damn, that's bad news. On top of that, 5 soldiers were killed in Afghanistan while they were training policemen just yesterday.

Seems to be ironic that, with Rememberance Sunday coming up, America and Britain seem to have lost 12 soldiers in just two day. My thoughts are with the families of those men. Poor people.

Why thank you.

Hmm, if its at graduation maybe there was a graduate who had been tormented or something, and this was revenge.

*sigh* ...... sorry, that was a typo. I meant to say that I am NOT giving anyone an excuse to kill.

EDIT: A retired officer says that guards are civilians that wield 9mm pistols, and one usually has a 9mm submachine gun.

Tormented or something and out for revenge?

Watching too much full metal jacket no? :P

It could have been military personal with mental problems, or a civilian could have done it. Because the article never specifies.

Oh Reds, about the mental part not being considered as much today.....that's changing and has been changing.
There are special classes they take now for mental health and coping.

I'm just thinking of the name and stuff. I know it's wrong to profile and stereotype, but as humans it's natural to think certain ways. Obviously the Islamic name jumps out, you know?

I'm guessing it was something around the lines of Full Metal Jacket. Someone just got pushed to much and far.
