Injured, my eyes bedazzled by the burning of the dragon's fire, I stumbled lost through a maze of steaming hot pools. Falling, stumbling, running in fear while hearing the sounds of predators all around in the brilliantly bright darkness, I trembled with the knowledge that I did not know where I was, nor indeed where I might be going, nor even why. With a sense of joy, I remembered who I am... I am Loraine, though who Loraine might be, I do not know.

The ground itself seemed to tremble in sympathy with my plight, and then I realized it was not sympathy that moved the earth, but rather the crushing footsteps of something tremendously huge walking nearby. I began to run into the blindness that lay before me, then suddenly I found myself falling from some height to land in rushing water far below where I had been.

Freezingly cold, the water restored me while threatening to take my life. It seemed there was no up or down, and I could not say which way to find the surface and precious air to breathe. It seems that in total darkness, all directions are the same. With no other choice, I began to swim into the darkness. all of a sudden my head broke the surface, and my burning lungs finally took in the air they craved. The current was strong, rushing me headlong in directions beyond my ken, and then I found myself scrabbling across bare rock on a far shore. Slowly, painfully, I clawed my way onto the graveled bank and lay gasping in the gloom of night.

I don't know how long I may have lain there, but after a time I became aware of a shape in the darkness... A building, a house of some sort, perhaps filled with dangers unkown, but promising at the least some shelter and perhaps warmth. I managed to stand, and exhausted, I stumbled forward onto the rough wooden porch where I found an unlocked door.

Knocking to announce my presence, but receiving no answer, I at length opened the door and peered into the gloomy interior. There was only one fair-sized room that contained three small beds, a rough-hewn table and bench, and a couple of chairs. Across the room from the door was a fireplace, with a small table and a couple of chairs placed in front of it.

I looked about warily, but it seemed I was the only living thing in the room, and indeed it seemed the building had been abandoned with no care for whatever remained behind. An empty stew pot lay overturned by the hearth, and some of the furniture had been carelessly tossed about.

With no further thought, I used a bit of fire magic to start a fire in that cold fireplace, and grabbed a rough blanket from the nearest bed. Then I lay by the fire and, mesmerized by leaping flame and shadow, tumbled into a deep sleep filled with Giants and Dragons and things with unholy appetites that made the earth itself tremble as they walked.

I stayed in that shack for a couple of days regaining my strength, and while there I learned the shack was housing for workers at a lumber mill owned by a woman named Gilfre. She'd seemed a kindly sort, though burdoned with many troubles due to a lack of workers at her mill. I'd worked for her those two days, and she paid me well, but I needed to find myself and who I am, so I left on the morning of the third day.

Then, seen dimly now through the blurred vision brought on by the tears of my memory, was the kahjiit. Strange in manner and appearance, standing near a bridge wearing the hooded robes of a monk, he seemed an omen sent by some crazed deity. As I drew near he spoke. "Maiq wishes you well." Then his eyes sudenly widened, and before I could respond, he turned and ran into the mist towards the river. His robes flapping as he ran, he looked like some ungainly flightless bird running through a land of insanity and I started to laugh at the sight when I was nearly knocked from my feet.

A large beast, nearly the size of a small horse brushed me aside as he ran in pursuit of the khajiit. His little piggy eyes burned red, but unlike a pig, he had two large horns on his snout. His breath had been fetid and hot, and my stomach was in revolt as I sent a pair of firebolts into the beast's rear flank.

Maiq, perhaps hearing the hiss of the firebolts, cried out and turned down the road back toward the mill, before turning sharply and leaping down the rocks toward the river. Startled but not apparently seriously hurt by my firebolts, the beast-pig creature ran at a frenzied pace down the road apparently forgetting Maiq for the moment.

I was laughing as I watched Maiq beg for mercy from a beast that no longer chased him, but my laughter died in my throat as I heard the screams from the mill. Continuing back down the road, the beast had charged Gilfre at the mill house and ripped out her life in a bare second. Those wicked horns pierced her gut like paper and the beast threw her lifeless body aside like a child's doll...

Unthinking of my own safety, I ran toward the mill while I summoned a flame atronach in front of that horrid beast. I was filled with rage, and soon the beast was dead, slain by the atronach and my firebolts, but that was no help for Gilfre. No more burdoned by her mill, her spirit now set free. Could I have have saved her? I don't think so... yet I seem to be feeling some guilt at the way she died while I was laughing at Maiq.

For many weeks, I simply wandered around Skyrim, seeing both the beauty and the darkness that is Skyrim.

Oooofff beautiful life...cut short.

I usually play that way, unless I have an ending for the story already in mind... I started using Death Alternative ( your money or your life) with some characters... as you don't always "die"...sometimes you are left for dead, no arm's or armor or very little.

For a second I thought you mean no actual arms! :lmao: I had an image in my head of a limbless PC lying in the woods.

Hmmm.....kinda close to a mod version of "Death with Consequences"....in which you get to reload retaining your level and skills...but everything....I mean everything, you own is gone permanently.

Kiss good bye to one off specials like the Sanguine Rose.....on console of course quest items will stay with you, and anything stored elsewhere in chests etc, but thats it...your char is inventory stripped.

Harsh...very....but compared to full on DiD its heaven!

I don't personally do this, cos to me its still a cop out on DiD, but it does add that danger thrill to play.

There is one other alternative, the 'inconvenient save point' choose one hard to reach place for your only save location...in High Hrothgar. That way you save very rarely...so getting killed is likely to drop you back a great many levels and cost hours of play time....sufficient recompense for getting a reload, with no loss beyond the save point time.

I Did try it a few times, but in the end I could not get past my DiD mentality.

To me... it's closer to reality.. they beat you down...you can't fight back.. they take all your stuff, but you live.

When I was testing it out.. here's how one of the battles went. Set-up... LvL under 5

PC's AR 56-ish ( 2h light)...follower AR 72-ish ( heavy, S & B)... 3 Chiss, 1 sword & board, 1 archer, 1 mage.

Between Meeko & Fort

PC smacked with arrow now @ 1/2 health ..get's off horse
mage throws spell ( combo of firebolt & unrelenting force) ... @ PC ...on knee..bleed out
all three now concentrate on follower... she takes knee quickly
PC uses potion...takes ^ to 1/2 health...
smacked with something...blacks out
PC wakes up at Inn in Morthal...with nothing on... follower has items... "borrows looted items"..
chases after bandits to retrieve "stolen" gear...
find's bandit's...get's spanked...HARD... dies...

Lesson learned...need better gear! more health...and more than one follower...

all on Adept...

Is it your type of play... No probably not... I like the challenge of the game different than you do.

My newest character is already underway, and kicking some butt. I've tried playing the death with consequences, and it's sort of okay... I used ot have a picture somewhere of a defunct character laying in the middle surrounded by everything she had owned. It was an amazing collection of junk, and it seriously called into question just how anybody could carry that much stuff and still be able to move.

I fight a constant battle against collecting more and more stuff to carry, it seems. I'm like "Well, I oughta sell that... but later on I can maybe enchant it or smith it, and it'll be great!" or "That 's a perfectly good potion of anti-troll flatulence, I might NEED that!" and every battle I seem to gain another pound or two of things I don't remember keeping and don't have a clue what added the weight...

Anyway, we'll be hearing from my new char soon, but again I'm not going to say if she's DiD or not. I suspect not, but who knows?

Aw man, that's kinda cruel. I have to say, though, there are times where I feel really bad about getting the character killed in the same way. Sure, one can reload, but it's hard to shake the feeling that it's sort of...wrong? Or that, in a way, there's a universe out there that has to carry on without the player character. Depending on the RP it's either of little consequence or everyone's screwed by Jills.

I also vouch for that Death Alternative mod. A friend and I did some good live RP due to the "saved by an adventurer" premise once.
