Yeah.... that's just a stupid thing the devs did - in my view because they couldn't figure out anything better.

Ankeddi 6:

I found the place easily enough. It was close to dusk though, and I thought I’d rather wait until morning to enter. So I made a small camp, ate some trail food, rolled into my bedroll and went to sleep. I woke near midnight, hearing the howls of wolves. Fortunately they were a long way off - but I shivered, knowing that call in my own blood as the moons rose full. The next was some days away yet.... Secunda was next, and at this point I thought it too bad that it wasn’t this night - it would have been an edge I could have used.

I’d stopped at the alchemist’s before leaving Whiterun, and asked the shopkeeper what she could sell me to prevent a vampire’s bite from infecting me. She sold me some potions she called the strongest Cure Disease ones she had. I had to hope they’d be enough. Of course, if Leki was with me, I’d be able to kill these beasts from hiding.... I had to hope it would work that way.

After dawn, I felt a moment of blessing; watching the sun rise, I saw slightly below me an odd edifice, and felt drawn to it. Riding down there quickly after breaking camp I was delighted to find a shrine of Zenithar in this tundra wilderness! So, there was my safety - I had potions at need, and a shrine for after and just in case... “Leki, thank you. I will make you a bless-offering when I am home again. And a shrine of your own.” It was a promise I would have to wait to keep - because I had to rid myself of the wereblood first.

I returned to the cavern opening. I shivered again. And then I entered.

Ankeddi 7:

I went into full-on stealth. I was pretty close to slithering on my belly, almost snake-like. I really wanted to get an idea of the area before having to take on these vampires and whoever else was here with them. The tunnel past the cave-mouth wasn’t very long, and I could even from just inside hear a woman muttering - and the rattling of bones.... either skeletons or the woman shuffling through the dead around her?

The tunnel was reasonably dark, and that was fine with me. The room ahead was lighter, but not by much - then again, it was a trait of the vampire breed that light was no friend to them - more so daylight than torches or lamps. However, I would be perfectly happy to deal with less light - for that would tend to protect me as well.

I reached the edge of the room. There was a set of steep stairs down into the room at a lower level than the tunnel. The woman - the vampire - was sitting on a bench or something with her back to me. I soundlessly drew down on her, and very quickly she was dead. Unfortunately, the bones were skeletons, all of whom began to converge on the stairs. I jumped hastily backward where the tunnel narrowed a bit, and shot them as they started to enter the tunnel from the stairs. The one thing you can say about skeletons is - they disintegrate pretty fast when hit with arrows.

I waited some minutes to make sure there were no other inhabitants before sliding down the tunnel again, and then down the stairs. The vampire was thoroughly dead - though undead.... I didn’t really understand how that worked, but I didn’t need to know to utilize it! I crept quietly around the room, finding a chest with some gold and an interesting dagger. I wondered if Deni would like it....

Across from the stairs and a bit left was another set of stairs up to a tunnel much like the first one - though this one had a turn to the right about halfway. More belly-work - much more of this and I’d be turning into a serpent instead of a wolf.... I edged around the turn. It was much lighter ahead, and as I paused to pull out my bow again and nock an arrow, I heard a voice, chanting something. Suddenly a body began to rise from the floor of the room. Apparently I wasn’t silent enough this time.

Before the revenant could fully rise, I sent two arrows into it. It fell backward. Then a man in fine clothing was silhouetted in the tunnel-mouth. He seemed to be looking and not seeing me - and before he found me I sent two more arrows - both of which hit him. He was still alive, but a third arrow sent him to the floor, and the fourth finished him.

I rose and moved toward him. Turning him over with my foot, I shuddered. I had been extremely lucky.... and I knew it. I took from him whatever of value there was, made two wooden stakes out of parts of the bed-box, pinned him to the floor with one, and went back to do the same for the vampire in the first room. Then I returned for the woman, threw her over my shoulder and carried her from this charnel house. Outside, I dug a shallow grave, placed her in it, threw dirt over her and finished up with a rock cairn.

“May your gods guide you gently into whichever afterlife is your choice.”

And then I drank a potion, and mounting, rode to the shrine, and used it too. You just can’t be too careful....

Oooh I liked that tension. She was lucky to get the drop on them...a toe to toe is not the kind of excitement you want in a confined space.

Well done with that! :)

Yep, she was lucky - actually I ran that with one of my girls who had the hunter needing a potion because of the vampires and that's where they were, and that's exactly how it played out. That girl's one of my stealth archers, and that makes some sense for Anki too.... Thanks guys!

Ankeddi 8:

I returned to Whiterun late - very. It was a day for running into everything from bandits (four in a band, though only three were trying to kill me) to packs of wolves everywhere, a couple of sabre cats (which had killed a mammoth and its giant - so I had a lot of loot when I was done with all that), and last but not least an assassin all got up in black leather - a khajiit with a grey pelt and aquamarine eyes, who wasn’t very hard to kill. She had a note saying someone had paid to have me killed.

Now.... that was truly odd. Siara’d had a note like that, taken off Deni’s mother’s body after killing her. I bit my lip, trying to work out who’d want to pay to kill any of us.... Well, there were possibilities.... some of which I refused to allow occupying space in my mind.

Dragging myself into Jorrvaskr, I headed down to the quarters, and was asleep before I could undress, wash, eat... I think I really just lost consciousness. I didn’t find it again until well past midmorning the next day. And then I worried - what if it was something to do with those vampires? So after washing I got out clean city clothing and dressed; and seeing Farkas waiting, I told him it was done.

And then I told him I was off to the Temple of Kynareth - just to make sure I was fine. He nodded, and went off to the other door.

The priestess looked into me, and said I was fine, though she gave me an odd look. I prayed at the shrine there anyway. Too bad simple prayer wouldn’t fix the wereblood....

When I returned to Jorrvaskr, Aela hailed me. “Skjor wants to talk to you - don’t delay, it’s important.”

So I hunted him up. He was out beating on the pells. “Aela said you were looking for me.”

“Yes. Your time it seems has come.”

“My.... time?”

“Last week a scholar came to us. He said he knew where we could find another fragment of Wuuthrad. He seemed a fool to me, but if he's right, the honor of the Companions demands that we seek it out. This is a simple errand, but the time is right for it to be your Trial. Carry yourself with honor, and you'll become a true Companion.

“Farkas will be your Shield-Sibling on this venture, whelp. He'll answer any questions you have. Try not to disappoint. Or to get him killed.” He turned and walked away.

Ankeddi 9:

So I went looking for Farkas. I found him eating in the main hall. I dropped into a seat beside him, grabbed some sort of sweet roll, and around bites, said “Skjor sent me to you. I guess I’m going to prove myself?”

He nodded. “I hope you’ve readied yourself.”

“So you’re to be my Shield Brother?”

“So I’m told. Let’s see if you impress.”

“Why did Skor call this my trial?”

"I watch you to make sure you’re honorable. If you are honorable and strong, I can call you brother. Well.... sister."

“This scholar.... who was he?”

"A smart man came and told us about a blade piece. Skjor thinks you should find it, and I’m supposed to watch you."

“A blade piece.... What is this - Wuuthrad?”

"Ysgramor was the hero who started the Companions. Wuuthrad was his weapon. He came from the ancient homeland and killed all the elves. But not all of ‘em, because some of ‘em are still here."

Hmm. While Farkas didn’t seem to be quite as mentally sharp as his brother Vilkas, he had a - rather endearing trait of saying exactly what he meant without deliberation. I liked that.

“Well, let’s go then. Soonest begun, soonest done.”

He sent me an odd glance, one I couldn’t parse. But shortly we were off first westward, then back north. An hour maybe and we climbed the outer shell of a ruin, with steps from the top down into it, and a door at the end of them.

We entered quietly and carefully. Ruins could be a problem anywhere, and in Skyrim it seemed they were usually crawling with the undead things known as draugr.

“Huh. Looks like someones’s been digging here, and recently. Tread lightly.”

I let out a tight-held breath. There were draugr - three of them, dead. How something undead can die.... well, that’s a philosophical question for another time. We headed for the opening across from the entrance.

Thank you ladies! Well, I'm not going to detail the whole crawl through Dustman's - we've all done it to death I think. So later I'll do something about abbreviation and get on with it.

Ankeddi 10:

Really, the first couple of areas were so quiet it was almost scary - there were a few draugr to kill (because while I could sneak with the best of them, Farkas.... well - he couldn’t). Then we entered a roundish room - and the obvious exit was closed by a gate with no way to open it or so it seemed.

“Look around; see if you can find some way to get that gate open.”

I looked carefully over all the walls and furniture. Finally I realized that there was an open side-room - and on a ledge was a lever. “Ah! Found it!” I pushed the lever.... and was immediately shut in by a gate that descended quickly over the arched opening. Well.... that wasn’t good.

Farkas appeared outside the gate. “Now look what you’ve gotten yourself into! Just sit tight, I’ll find a release.”

So I waited as he prowled the area to find how to get me out. Suddenly, five warriors appeared from - somewhere; one of them said “Killing you will make for an excellent story!”

Farkas growled “None of you will be alive to tell it.” And suddenly, he was a werewolf. It took him next to no time at all to kill them.... So he was one who could transform at will....

He went back to another area and did something to open the gate I was locked behind. When he returned, he glanced at me. “I hope I didn’t scare you.”

I shook my head. “No. Thanks for getting me out of here. Who were these gits?”

“Silver Hand. Bad people who don’t like werewolves. Not all of us are - but the Circle.... It’s a secret to most.”

“Ah. Well, let’s get on with this then.” He looked over at me oddly. I didn’t explain.

 very nice... I always think of Farkas as a deliberate thinker, who doesn't much give his opinion . Some of his comments are... dead to rights.
