Ankeddi 11:

There wasn’t much else going on in that barrow - other than more Silver Hand and draugr. Eventually we collected the shards of Ysgramor’s axe, and were glad to be on the road back to Jorrvaskr.

Farkas kept slanting me odd little looks - as if he’d like to come right out and ask why him changing hadn’t upset me. But I wanted to talk to Kodlak first. He was the Harbinger. He would be the one to tell me what I needed to know - and to decide what to tell the others. So I let Farkas keep looking, and I plied him with questions about the Companions.

We made Whiterun at dusk. And Jorrvaskr shortly after. Vilkas met us on the steps, and took me to where the Circle was waiting.... so they must have some way of communicating across distance. Interesting.

Kodlak relieved us of the blade bits, and then the Circle went through some sort of “initiation” responses - and finally Kodlak intoned:

“Then this judgment of this Circle is complete. Her heart beats with the fury and courage that have united the Companions since the days of the distant green summers. Let it beat with ours, so the mountains may echo and our enemies may tremble at the call.”

And everyone there foregathered responded “It shall be so!” Fairly impressive, it was, truly.

On the morrow, after a decent sleep (though the bed was harder than I was used to), I went out to send arrows into targets for a bit.

Eventually, Farkas turned up. We sparred for a while, then he said Skjor had a job for me. So I went inside and sat down next to him at the table. They seemed to eat - and fight! - a lot here....

“So, there’s work you need done?”

“Aye. The idiots in Falkreath still think the best place for prisoners is that hole in the ground. No surprise, but one of them's gotten out. Again. Handle it. Put him or her back where expected.”

So I headed for home first. I expected to find Siara and Andur already gone. But I was startled to hear that not only had Elgial gone with them, but so had Deni. I looked at my mother, and she shrugged and shook her head. Well.... Deni was - a lot older - than her actual years.... but....

Thanks guys! Actually, Anki would do almost anything necessary at this point to get rid of the wereblood. ESPECIALLY now that she knows her father pretty much infected her on purpose....

Ankeddi 12:

But well.... I was not her parent. So it wasn’t any of my business - but I sent blessings their direction anyway. Uneasy thoughts....

Still, that wasn’t why I was here.... as Selalla reminded me. “So, daughter. You’ve come home. Are you - free?”

She must surely know I was not. But - she was ever one for not just bludgeoning things....

“No mama. I have somewhat to do for the Companions here in Falkreath Hold. So I just wanted to come home, on the way more or less.”

“Ah. And what would you be doing for them here?”

Leave it to Selalla to ask the question you NEVER wanted her to do....

“Eh, someone prisoned in what Falkreath considers a jail has escaped. I’m supposed to get him or her back....”

“Hmm. That’s the hole in the ground, isn’t it?”

“Ayaha. It’s not.... humane.... and I was thinking I could do something - aside - about that....”

“Oh.” Selalla went away somewhere.... “Well, then. You should talk to Nokka.... she probably knows more about this than I do.”

Hmmm. A not so subtle nudge. So - was this escapee HERE? I thought probably.... yes. I smiled, kissed my mother on the cheek and gave her a hug, and headed out to find Nokkara.

Well. THAT was a facer. The escapee was not only here, and not only female.... she was one of Siddgeir’s by-blows. Nokkara had looked into and through me, and finally said “You need to talk to this girl. And then.... you need to NOT put her back in the hole....” Well, I already the same as knew that, didn’t I? Anyway, she took me into the area to the north that was rough and not very accessible. And when we saw a small fire in the distance, she stopped me with a hand.

“Serlana. It’s Nokkara, and I’ve brought someone you need to meet. May we come to the fire?”

There was a small “Ayah” from near the fire. We walked in slowly and quietly, and my eyes bugged out at the face of the girl by the fire. She was - lovely. She was all of Siddgeir’s gross and coarseness fined down - and on a girl, not yet woman.... “gorgeous” didn’t begin to express it! I was dumbstruck.

Nokkara made introductions. The girl turned to me and said “Can you keep me out of the hole? I did nothing. I was put there because I’m Siddgeir’s daughter, and for naught else.”

“Oh aye. I’ll not put you back there. Nokkara told me there’s not one thing you’ve done that would cost so much as a day in the hole. And.... well - if you trust us.... you can disappear into the family, and none will look for you after.”

Her face lit up like the Fae-lights. “Oh yes! I would do anything to not have to go back into Falkreath at all!”

“Well, girl, we live in Falkreath Hold - but no one will let anyone in the town see you or do anything to you.”

She thought it over for all of half a minute. “Oh, thank you. I will be happy for that refuge!”

So Nokka and I packed her up and took her back into the Ridge. We got her settled, and then I went over to Selalla. “Mama, we brought the girl back with us. She’s willing to settle here with us. I’ll have to figure out how to make Dengeir fix things with the hole, but for now, all I need to do is tell the Companions it’s done.”

And so it proved. I returned to Jorrvaskr, hunted up Farkas, and told him it was done (as it was, if in essence in a different manner). He seemed happy. I went to bed.

Well, my view is that as long as "something is done" - and as long as no one argues about it! - it's okay. Now, Anki's not got the time etc. to deal with Dengeir on the hole.... but Selalla does....

Ankeddi 13:

The next morning I decided to beard Kodlak about the wereblood. I wanted SHUT of it.... in the worst way. Right now, if I met someone I could love (no, we’re not talking the brothers here....) I wouldn’t dare go there. And there were other things to consider too - the fact that if we ever got back to Hammerfell (and I honestly didn’t think we would, or that we needed to) I wouldn’t be ABLE to get rid of the curse; and also there were these Silver Hand who could easily it seems sense the wereblood, and were very happy to rid the carrier of his or her life as a result. And they didn’t give one time to explain....

I found the Harbinger pacing the walls above the practice yard. He sent me a piercing glance from under hooded brows. He seemed - disturbed.

“So. You’ve got the Blood already, aye?”

I nodded, unsurprised.

“Tell me about it. This may be important.”

So I told him all the tale. By the time I was done, his eyebrows were tangling in his hair nearly. I waited, hoping I’d made some sort of sense.

“You can’t change at will?” I shook my head. “And - I feel that you don’t want to keep the Blood....”

“I’d - like to know how to get rid of it permanently. That’s why I came here....”

“How did you know the Companions could help?”

“My sister-in-law’s adopted daughter is a Nord, born in Skyrim and lately fostered in Bruma. Things fell out that we needed to move into Falkreath, and Deni came with us. She’s the one who knew somewhat about seeking a cure through the Companions. It turns out she has a mothering-strong mage gift - so I’m thinking that’s part of her knowing....”

He fell into deep thought, gone entirely elsewhere for long and long. Finally he turned back to me, staring into me with deep-set, sad eyes.

“Here’s the truth of it, girl. The Companions are nearly five thousand years old. This matter of beastblood has only troubled us for a few hundred. One of my predecessors was a good, but short-sighted man. He made a bargain with the witches of Glenmoril Coven. If the Companions would hunt in the name of their lord, Hircine, we would be granted great power."

“So.... they became werewolves....”

“They did not believe the change would be permanent. The witches offered payment, like anyone else. But we had been deceived."

“That’s - unconscionable....”

"The witches didn't lie, of course. But it's more than our bodies. The disease, you see, affects not just our bodies. It seeps into the spirit. Upon death, werewolves are claimed by Hircine for his Hunting Grounds. For some, this is a paradise. They want nothing more than to chase prey with their master for eternity. And that is their choice. But I am still a true Nord. And I wish for Sovngarde as my spirit home."

Ah. “And so do I, Harbinger. This ‘gift’ was forced onto me by my father - who should have been taking care with me rather than infecting me.”

Curiosity lit his gaze. “What happened to him? Did he find the way to be cured?”

“Oh no. He was - happy with the wereblood. He had no intention of losing the ability to change. My mother separated from him, and when I was twelve, he accosted me in wolf form, and in fighting him off - and killing him - I took the infection. I’ve no doubt that’s what he intended all along - though I’m sure he didn’t expect to die on a very young woman’s blades.” I took a grim sort of delight in Kodlak’s startled look.

He shook his head, seeming bewildered. “Well, that’s neither here nor there I suppose. But that’s what I've spent my twilight years trying to find out. And now I've found the answer. The witches' magic ensnared us, and only their magic can release us. They won't give it willingly, but we can extract their foul powers by force. I want you to seek them out. Go to their coven in the wilderness. Strike them down as a true warrior of the wild. And bring me their heads. The seat of their abilities. From there, we may begin to undo centuries of impurity."

I gave the man a deep bow of honor. “It shall be done, Kodlak Whitemane.”

“Good. Now move quickly. And don’t leave any of them alive. Talos guide you, lass.”

That gets me every time. I've played the Companions twice, once vanilla and once Enhanced Faction, and I couldn't stop the tears either time.
