Only recently have I begun using a horse. Initially, the "handling" just seemed so ludicrous that I avoided riding a horse at all costs. This is coming from someone who played Skyrim before Oblivion, you see. I have come to appreciate the fact that Cyrodiil has different types of horses, each with it's own characteristics. So here is yet another feature that Skyrim seems to have cut corners on. Well, I'm not complaining about Skyrim horses but I do appreciate variety. On this playthrough I was determined to make use of a horse. The first one I bought happened to be a Paint, which happens to be the slowest horse, unbeknownst to me at the time. Imagine my surprise then, when at the Priory of the Nine I mounted a Chestnut: and took off! How fast this horse was compared to my old Paint. So I took it upon myself to learn the differences between the horses by consulting the trusty crust old guide book. (Unfortunately the Chestnut was dispatched at the first location I traveled to, by a troll. Oh bloody hell.) Apparently the Black horse is the best. I close second however is the White horse, and this appeals to my Divine Crusader character, Bjorn Bear Born. He gladly paid 5000 septims for his faithful steed, and now rides toward glory and greatness. Enough about me though, what have been your experiences with horses? Do you use them or no, and what type. Additionally, I know that a unicorn is obtainable, (which reminds me of a funny story regarding said unicorn the very first time I played Oblivion.. but another time), but would the unicorn be a good choice? What say you? :beermug: Edited by Kohlar the Unkilled, Oct 23 2016, 09:58 PM.

Uh. I don't use horses in any game other than Skyrim. And I only use them in Skyrim because there's a couple of mods that make horses.... workable. Unicorn? No clue, sorry. Edited by Serethil, Oct 23 2016, 10:03 PM.

I didn't use horses much in Oblivion and usually only in the MQ with Martin and the Priest/Blade.. the one and only time I ran into the Unicorn, it attacked. I use Horse in Skyrim a lot... but the mods make them workable. |

My character doesn´t make use of horses barely at all, although he does own a Paint that besides the odd riding through the mountains never leaves the stable. This comes from when Lothran´s first Paint got killed by a bear whilst he was fighting a bandit and couldn´t come to the rescue fast enough. It was quite disheartening. Also, he simply prefers to have his feet on the ground. That enables him to draw his weapon faster and summon helpers without the need to dismount first. Besides the two Paints, he´s never tried any other horse. Edited by mirocu, Oct 24 2016, 09:56 AM.

It has to come to PC Skyrim first. Snow Bears - already there in vanilla game. Rideable - there are mods for that, I've adapted parts from most of them. Rider outfits in the same vein - done. Rider's Lodge - done. First quest (join and buy a bear to ride) - done Second quest (retrieve an amulet for the bear-trainer) - done I started creating the quest to recruit more riders, based on the Blades one, but can't pair up the new riders with bears properly. They keep getting separated, and the rider walks for the rest of the game. The other problem is the lack of voice acting. I can't do a convincing female voice. Posted Image That's an NPC rider, too, while she was still patrolling ON the bear. Edit: I started a Skyrim topic, so this wouldn't wander off too far. Edited by ghastley, Oct 24 2016, 01:52 PM.

I've gotten the hang of Oblivion horses, something I didn't think possible. Really cuts down the travel time between undiscovered locals. I mean, this White flies. Nothing can catch her. Ha, regarding the unicorn... I had literally just started playing Oblivion, knowing virtually nothing about the game. Don't know what level I was but had to be low, single digits. Anyhow, just randomly exploring I happened upon the little valley that contained the unicorn, and minotaurs! Drawing my sword was the mistake because that's what prompts the unicorn to attack. I easily outran the minotaurs... but not that unicorn. Fighting it was quickly revealed to be hopeless, so I fled, the unicorn literally on my ass as I ran halfway across the map. It's neighing and whinnying at me the whole time getting in the occasional stomp until finally I came to a town- I believe it was Bravil but I can't be sure at this point. I went to the inn where I drank, slept, and healed from my nightmare. When I finally left town, the unicorn was out there, waiting, fervently for it's chance to obliterate me! By Boethia's bowels what is this thing?! I thought unicorns were just peaceful and beautiful... The story ends with me luring the unicorn in toward the town-gate to where it could attack me within the guards' proximity, and it worked. With the aid of two guards, I finally dispatched this hateful hell-horse. :beermug: |

Unicorns represents pure good so by drawing your weapon, even in self-defense, makes it attack you. But it´s more about game mechanics here I reckon. The game can´t distinguish the difference in you attacking and defending yourself :P |

In my Gweden Brothel mod I added a blonde virgin Breton to look after the unicorn, with a fun quest to untangle the situation. You have to get the unicorn and rider all the way to Anvil, which is not easy, even with fast travel. Edited by ghastley, Oct 25 2016, 03:12 PM.

I've never had much use for horses to be honest. They make Cyrodiil seem a little too small, are somewhat awkward when it comes to dealing with enemies, and half the time when I got off my horse to fight I couldn't find it again. But I did once take the Unicorn to Cloud Ruler Temple. That was hilarious. |

If it so happens that my current horse dies, I will obtain the unicorn. The uesp states that the unicorn may not attack you if it's disposition is sufficiently high, for instance if you have high fame. I'm famous, so... :beermug: |

I'm liking that "may". That sounds promising, either as a potential exploit of sorts, or the source for an amusing anecdote :D |

Alas, my beautiful white horse fell to a mountain lion. Thus, I have obtained my unicorn, who kills bears with relative ease. AND, she doesn't mind if I draw my sword. Look out Cyrodiil! :beermug: |

I've allowed Kjorn to return to her grove and spent 5,000 septims on the coveted black horse. I'm not regretting the decision. Fitting, since I relinquished my Divine Crusader armor to don the Imperial Dragon armor crafted for me for saving Tamriel from certain doom. Nothing can catch this horse. I'll call him Bucephalus. :beermug: |
