Heh, I know people who said the same thing about Windows 95... but good luck with that, eh? :)

I used 95 a lot longer than anything other than win7.

Not long ago I worked with my local District Attorney's office. Guess what I found out. They were still using Windows 95 and a proprietary software for their entire records system.

It wasn't a problem until a basement flooded out and all physical records were destroyed... and then they discovered that half of their records had never been entered in the database, or were lost in cyberspace somewhere.

To be fair, it could have happened with any OS. One would have thought that important records would have a reliable backup somewhere though.

What happens though is that incompatibilities slip in unnoticed as tech develops. Think of DirectX issues as an example.

Sometimes the incompatibilities slip in noticed. Microsoft is notorious for breaking software that ran on their older versions of Windows.

A lot of professional software got broken when Microsoft dropped the non-NT Windows track. The last version of Windows that runs the older DOS-based windows software is Windows ME, and that's where a lot of small businesses with proprietary software got stuck.

Nice ghastley!

Not so nice Arthmoor - he's dropping support for his town mods in LE the first of January, and concentrating on SSE. I'm not happy. I'm NOT moving to SSE for two reasons: first, I just don't like it; second I'm not going to have that CC crap happening behind my back.

So, I guess I'll make sure I have the latest versions of his stuff, and just keep them forever in various archives so I never lose them. He hasn't mentioned LAL yet, but I bet that's going away for LE too....
LAL won't be far behind. Arthmoor has been pushing hard for everyone in LE land to pack up shop and move to SSE. It wouldn't surprise me if he stopped supporting LE LAL soon. Doesn't affect me, since I don't use any of his mods (except point the way) and I have gotten my load order to the point where I won't likely be doing any major updates for quite a while.

But, I'd say a good half or more of my load order is no longer supported, and I am running several older versions of mods (including Frostfall and Immersive College of Winterhold, among others). New, isn't always improved IMHO and I didn't care for many of the new features these mods added in certain updates. Anyway, I had to learn how to make my own compatibility patches since no one publishes compatibility patches for outdated versions of mods. So, now I just do my own support.

Whenever I download a new mod, I load it in xEdit, and spend some time poking around and kicking tires. Checking for conflicts with the rest of my load order and other issues.

Yeah. Good points Turija. I'll just make sure I keep my old versions around, and I'll have to learn how to make patches I guess. And how to really use xedit.

xEdit is a really useful tool to make compatibility patches and tweak things the way you like. It is much easier to learn than the CK, and it is less buggy, it never crashes (unlike the CK which is a crashy beast), you don't need to worry about "esmifying" masters in order to work on a mod with multiple masters in xEdit, and you don't have to worry about xEdit making unintentional changes (ITM records) or confusion about which of many mods in yoru load order makes what change. Unlike the CK, xEdit just works. Once you get over a small learning curve with xEdit, it is an absolute joy to work in, unlike the CK, which I find to be a royal fucking pain in the ass (pardon my French).

Here is a link to a very useful xEdit tutorial video by Fadingsignal. There are three videos in the series and they are all worth watching. When I first booted up xEdit, all the records and the various columns and rows in the spreadsheet looked really intimidating. But after watching these videos, I understood what it was all about and was able to start checking for conflicts myself, resolving them and even started making mods.

After looking at enough mods in xEdit I started to understand record structure enough to be able to learn the CK, but I still cringe every time I have to open the CK and sit through all the error messages it spits out and hope I can get my work in it done before it crashes, not to mention remembering to esmify all my masters first. xEdit is soooooo much more fun to use. End rant.

Well, I'll have to look at the vids, though I don't learn well that way. I've actually never had CK crash on me, but then I'm not making mods either - I'm just tweaking things....

I've had the CK crash a bunch. Typically I try to save every few minutes, because when you have spent half an hour carefully arranging clutter it really sucks to have to do it all over again.

But I typically am working on a mod with multiple masters, so that may be harder for the CK to handle than just working on a mod that only has Skyrim as a master.

But what is most annoying to me is having to esmify a bunch of mods just to make a quick change to a compatibility/tweak patch. The game can handle esp files as masters just fine and so can xEdit, so it makes no sense why the CK cannot.

EDIT: as far as the videos go, I typically don't have the patience to sit through a long video, but these are fairly short and to the point, and I have zero experience using spreadsheet programs like Lotus 1-2-3 (is that even around anymore) or Excel, so I found the videos helpful in overcoming my initial reaction to xEdit's rather intimidating array of spreadsheet data.

Lol. I have a friend who drove an Elise for ten years. It’s kind of a girly car for my taste and I had trouble just squeezing into it. But he seemed to like it. Same buddy wanted a tattoo so he thought it would be a good idea to get it in an area where people would not see it at work. When I agreed that would be a good idea I had no idea he would get a fleur-de-lis on his lower back. :ugh:
