Ugh. Well, I'm not going to be much further help - I don't have icons on my desktop at all (just the recycle bin and desktop.ini you can never get rid of - and I have them hidden), never have. Mine live in the quick launch bar at the bottom.... For the CTDs, well, dunno. I never had any problem running Ob on win10.... It's a very odd situation for sure! |

Wanta hear something strange? I decided to go radical on figuring this thing with Oblivion out. I deactivated everything in my load order that wasn't straight up Oblivion or official DLC. I completely deleted all traces of saves and so forth from the first attempts to make characters..Then I went in to try to make another character. All of that effort hadn't cured a thing. Twice I got characters 3/4 created, and had the game minimize on me, and then not be restorable. Then... I'd opened Steam to verify local files one more time, and instead of closing Steam, I minimized it, and then completely forgot it was even open. I started trying to create another character, got to about 3/4 through, and an odd resizing pointer showed up on the top of my Oblivion screen, and then CRASHO the game was minimiized. I hit alt-tab and found myself looking at the Steam interface, and without thinking I clicked somewhere or other on the Steam interface. Next thing I know, Steam has minimized again and I'm looking at a black screen. Two seconds later, Oblivion was there just as I had left it, and running fine. Technically, that is supposed to be impossible. I've played for hours now, and the same thing has happened a couple of times. It seems that I can play the game as long as Steam is open in the background and minimized. Using a bow is still problematic though, as trying to draw and aim the bow inevitably causes the game to minimize. At least now the game is recoverable. |

Neil, In this case I would create a new separate HDD partition and load a more compatible OS into it. That way you can run say Windows 7 for Ob and Win 10 for SSE. My 0.02 |

Did you get Ob through steam to begin with? If so, it's not the same as the one I run from disk.... and maybe you need to have steam at least set to be offline but open for Ob like you do with Skyrim? |

My disk is already partitioned to the max, and I also have a thoroughly borked version of 8.1 sitting all by itself, so I'm not willing to make things any more complicated. It's a good thought though. :)
Yeah, I bought it from Steam, and they've actually been quite decent about it... even offered me a refund. I didn't take it because I actually want to play the damned game. :) However, Steam being open in the background for Skyrim is quite a different thing. For Skyrim, I open the game using NMM so that SKSE will also be opened, and it opens Steam so that I can access the Steam services while in-game, but... in the case of Skyrim, Steam does not show up on my task bar as being minimized. It also doesn't normally show up as minimized when I open Oblivion through OBSE or NMM. When Oblivion started working last night, I had actually opened Steam and manually minimized it, then launched the game through NMM. It's very strange.... |

Well, if there's nothing wrong with your game, then something else is interfering with it. It's probably a program that auto-starts when you start windows, or some background process that'll be a nightmare to track down. I used to have a problem with one of my games not working, turned out it was a background process that was screwing things up. Edited by Callidus Thorn, Dec 3 2016, 03:04 PM.

Well, at least it's playable now that I know I have to open Steam first, then start the game using NMM or mod organizer so that OBSE will run. :) |
