Nine - Exploration 2: Mid-morning showed Tan another one of the “light-fountains”, this one not far from the small temple he would leave for later. So, that was a very good thing to know - there were more of them, and he felt again as he touched the light in this one, that glow of warmth. It was something to keep in mind, to make parts of this journey less - painful, he hoped. Though as yet, pain had not been part of the equation. He would be happy if pain was never a part of it.... He kept close to the rock walls to the north here. Somewhere there had to be the place where the amulet was kept. He had a feeling that this amulet would be guarded. Probably by the cats themselves. Now how was he to manage getting the charm without killing or being killed? Well, he didn’t know yet. He wouldn’t know until he found the place. But the thought alone made him wary - he tried to think how one could outwit ancient cheetahs. They would be fast, and deadly.... By nooning, he’d found another of the light-fountains. And as he moved back toward the wall of rock to the north, he realized there was a narrow, dark fissure straight ahead. Having marked the fountain, he now took out the map again, and sketched in the fissure in the rock. And then, he moved carefully and quietly into it.... The canyon was constricted and tight. There wasn’t much room to move to start with. Soon though it opened out a bit. He chose to climb up the ledges a couple of man-lengths from the ground - safer that way. Clinging to the rock like a limpet to its beach, he moved carefully and silently deeper into the canyon. He began to hear - he wasn’t sure what.... but the sounds were animal.... Then from his perch he saw movement ahead. Ah. A cheetah. What a beautiful cat! It was huge, muscular, its pelt shining with health. It grumbled under its breath - apparently it was aware that this canyon now held an outsider - but so far, Tan hadn’t been found. Scent though - too bad he hadn’t thought about something to disguise himself.... He thought a bit. And then.... the cat found him. It leaped up the wall nearly able to reach him! It was silent - and for that he was thankful. There were likely more of them - and had this one chosen to scream and roar its discovery, Tan thought he’d probably be dead shortly. Tan started firing at the cat. Instead of running off for others, it simply kept silently attempting to climb to his perch. Finally one of his arrows took it in an eye, and it slumped to the canyon floor, dead. His heart was beating so hard he thought he might fall next to the cat himself. But a few moments of deep breaths gave him a measure of composure. He was sorry he’d had to kill the beautiful animal. He was finding in himself an increasing unwillingness to end life simply because that life chose to attack him. How odd. He wondered where that feeling came from, in his decidedly ordinary existence.... Finally, he sidled further along the ledges and ridges. Eventually, he saw a worked masonry gate.... Sighing, he realized he was going to have to descend to the canyon floor to go through it - there was no way to climb past it. It was getting late. He decided to sleep where he was, and go on in the morning. |

All journeys are voyages of discovery - they expand one's knowledge in more ways than just the physical.... |

Yeah.... so we all know I'm OLD. Never once in my entire life have I EVER wanted to be male. Period. Nope. Never. So yah, it's awkward for me running a young male through this mod.... for RP.... like I even KNOW how to RP male. No. I do NOT know how to RP male. I don't WANT to know - because I do NOT DO MALE. |

Ten - Extrication: Tan woke to the sun shining cheerfully. It was quite warm; he had been glad of his layers over the nights, but he was also happy that those same layers seemed able to breathe during the heat of the days so he wasn’t hot as he had been in his leathers. He slithered silently down the rocks, having removed his boots - barefoot was much quieter. If he could keep silent in stealth until he got through the gate to see what was beyond.... And there was that odd piece of magic that he’d had to use a few times in the Halls of the West - might that assist in some way? Creeping quietly toward the gate, he looked up and around, hoping not to see or hear any cats. What he did see was enough to cause his heart to pound - just before the steps up to the gate, there was a ridge angling left up the side of the wall, and it seemed to end in a metal grate! He quickly but quietly scaled the tumbled rocks to reach the ridge. As he did so he began to hear the rumbles and growls of, probably, the cheetah guardians. Tan placed his back against the sheer rock face and set his feet carefully on the steep angle of the ridge. He moved slowly, because speed could cause a fall, or help the cats find him. It took him about ten minutes to reach the metal grate. He could see pillars and overhanging lintels in the area past the grate, which was also beyond the gate it seemed. It was the work of just moments to climb over and drop down inside. He stopped to listen, then looked around carefully. Ah. There was a cheetah below him, pacing nervously. Tan looked over the rocky masses below him, trying to pick a way across above the cat to reach a tiled wall-face from which he thought he could jump to the top of a pillar. And from there he hoped he could figure out where the amulet might be, and how to get to it without being ambushed by the guardians. He was sure there would be more than just the cat he could see... So - he had to get down there, find the amulet - and no doubt put it on - in order to get out again, alive and in one piece. He squatted for a few minutes to eat a bit and drink - mostly to settle his nerves and stomach. Finally, he took a deep breath and jumped from his perch to the first rock mass that seemed stable. The cat was not presently visible to Tan, so he settled his breathing and took the next jump he’d planned out. It took him nearly half an hour to work his way to the last jump - the one to the tiled wall with its small ledge. The cat had realized there was an interloper some while back, but hadn’t looked up, for which Tan was very thankful. As the cat paced away again, Tan jumped and clung to the wall, trying not to lose his footing on the small ledge. His heart was beating hard as he started to overbalance. In order to not fall, he all but danced his way along to a wider spot on the ledge. There Tan stopped to get his breath back. He shuddered when he thought about falling.... but resolutely put the thought aside - he couldn’t afford to be distracted. He moved around the ledge to see what could be seen - and as he got to the area behind the double row of pillars, he noticed a dark stone - altar, perhaps? - centered within the pillar row. Well.... that might be where the amulet was.... but now the cheetahs were pacing around, knowing they’d been invaded, but unsure where he was. Peering carefully up and down the row of pillars, he finally picked out a way to get to the side of that altar. It required jumps - and careful ones - but kept him up above the milling cats. The last thing he wanted was to have to kill any more of them - and of course, if one found him they all would. He was the one who would die at that point.... He’d counted twelve of them - unless of course there were more or less and he’d lost track of which was which! Entirely possible. Tan made his jumps. When he reached the side of the altar, he realized it was bulkier than he’d thought - and he considered he might be able to jump onto it, balance himself, and reach down to see if the amulet was there. Shrugging fatalistically he breathed deeply. He could, of course, only die once.... |

That's the thing, isn't it? These mods (Clockwork and Gray Cowl) are to me the PINNACLE of Skyrim quest modding. I want others to know and love them too - but spoiling them with TMI is just so wrong.... |
