33 - Oh HELLS - no.... or.... yes?

So, I saddled Vigil and headed for Solitude. Not a long way - but long enough to give me time to reflect, and settle to the fact that this was a task I would have to deal with, whether with Vartain’s help, or without. As little as I relished asking the High King (or anyone else!) for help, I knew that I hadn’t a choice. This whole situation was now far beyond anything I could be expected to handle alone - and the longer it took to get help, the more likely it would be that those I loved would be threatened. Or dead. At that thought, my stomach all but dropped out of me. I needed to.... vomit. But I also needed to just get my ass to Solitude, so I told my belly to shut it, and rode on.

By evening, I rode Vigil into Detka’s and paid her for a stall and some grain. Then I headed up into the city. I thought I’d best go on up to the Palace and hope Vartain was around - it wasn’t late so if they’d dined, evening court should be still going.

I walked into the Palace, and up the stairs. Apparently everyone was just done with dinner, and walking into their normal places. A tall man, back to me, was laughing at something the young woman near him had said.

As everyone settled, the man turned toward me. I - nearly - fainted. Devis! It... no.... but his twin? I went red, and then white - I could tell by how I felt. The man rushed toward me, and I cringed away - but all he did was take my arm, probably so I didn’t fall over. Tears flooded my eyes and ran down my cheeks.

“Lady? Are you ill?” He seemed genuinely concerned.

“I.... it’s complicated. Very. I’ve come to see the High King, on a matter of import to Hjaalmarch....”

He looked down at me in puzzlement. “Well, I’m Vartain. But what could Hjaalmarch have to discuss with me? And who are you?”

I did faint this time.

34 - I can’t even believe this.

I regained consciousness to find myself in a room to one side of the throne room, lying on a bed. The court mage (at least I think that’s who she is) and another woman were just leaving, and the High King sat in a chair nearby. I swallowed hard. I could hardly stand to look at him.... but I couldn’t help doing so.

He smiled. “Well. That was interesting. I’d appreciate an explanation - it’s not very day a woman faints at my feet after all!”

I waved a hand, and sat up. I decided to wait to stand for a bit. “It’s a long story - and apparently even longer than I thought.... considering.

“I’m Verinne Ravenwing’s granddaughter. We’ve got a situation in Morthal - and it’s to do with.... a man I knew long ago. A man who is enough like you to be your twin - which is why I fainted.”

He sat forward. “Oh. Really.” A frown settled on his face, and he stared down at his hands for a few moments, then looked back at me, grim-faced. “He is my brother - my twin. He’s been in Cyrodiil for many years - in gaol for a variety of crimes. I didn’t know he’d been released.... Perhaps he escaped. We haven’t spoken in - oh, perhaps fifteen years.

“He has always been - a.... problem for the family. As I’m the only family remaining, it appears he’s now going to be my problem to deal with. How did you come to know him?”

“My da’s a bard, as well as being the Jarl’s eldest son. He was here on his rounds, playing at the Skeever and then going on to Dragonbridge and so on. I had just finished a trip to Solstheim - I wanted to see the Temple there, and wound up here just as da was leaving. So I went along with him to Dragonbridge - and then I just decided to stay for a bit when he left. It’s a nice town, I like the inn....” His look on me was brooding. I swallowed and continued.

“A day later, a man walked into the inn. He stopped to chat, and we - hit it off quite well. I was young, and - full of myself.... So we.... Anyway, we had a good time for a couple of moons - and then he said he had family issues to see to. He called himself Devis Winsten, and we talked over how much his name was like the name of the place I grew up - Windstad Manor....” I shook my head. “Sorry - I’m sure you don’t want a huge long story.”

“Well, actually - I do rather. Since I thought he was still under lock and key in Cyrodiil, it’s a bit disconcerting to discover that since the last time I talked to him, he met and had a brief affair with you, went off to do family something - which I’m sure wasn’t at all true - got himself into a mess in Bruma, and I thought had been in prison since. Apparently not.”

He glanced at me. “I can see why he’d have been interested in you. But I don’t see why you’re here looking for me.”

So I told the rest of the tale - from waking up in a hole when I’d last been at the inn in Whiterun, to seeing him just this evening, and falling into a faint.

Vartain just stared at me when I’d finished. “Divines! Incredible. No no, I believe you. What I don’t believe is what Vintan expects to get out of this. That’s his name, by the way, not Devis. And no, we’re not the last of the Windstads - at least not as far as I’m aware....” He scowled. “So what in all the hells is he playing at?”

I had a sudden frightening thought. “If.... does he know you’re the High King? If so....”

I went cold all over at the possibilities that opened up from that one question.

Oooo hells, this is NOT looking good! Damn, at least the King believes her, but this has taken a more devious turn than I imagined. Shades of 'my twin, the King!'
Time for Devis/Vintan's time on Nirn to come to an abrupt stop!

Incredible Sis, I love it!!

Thank you! I'm by way of being rather happy with it myself. Now, mind - I really had no idea when I posted the first bit, where this was going. Not at all. In fact, from just the first bit - I thought it might not go much of anywhere....

Well, as my own grandmother used to say about questions.... don't hold your breath, you might die before you get the answers.

It's already a real life habit. That and knuckle cracking are nervous ticks for me.

Well.... I fixed my nail-biting thing, but it's not likely something a man would do. I started having acrylic nails done.

You CANNOT bite acrylics. Well.... you can, but it's a really bad idea. You could break your teeth. Serious. As for knuckle-cracking. Yeah. Still do that. Been doing that for nigh on 70 years. Knuckles are just fine - not lumpy, and plenty flexible thanks.
