Very good... I got a couple of good laughs.

You know I only married my EX because we bought airplane ticket's to go see his parent's and then mine, ... then on to our duty stations. His parent's said that I was not welcome to sleep under their roof unless I was married to their son.. so as we had planned on getting married...eventually..and the ticket's were non-refundable.. and we were almost broke.. we got married.

His Father took an instant dis-like to me... the feeling was mutual, only it took going to their church.. and the lecture he gave me when I walked out mid-sermon.. If your going to make prejudiced statements... at least make sure they aren't ignorant ones. I have little tolerance for sheer stupidity.

I am pretty sure he ( Ex's Father) was never so happy as the day he found out we were getting a divorce.. as it happen's though I really love his Mother.. and he ( ex-husband) and I are still friends.

47 - Why family can’t ever be simple and easy....

We didn’t go to the inn. G’ma insisted we stay in the extra room now that Tovis was back in his own home - with guards. With a glance - only slightly snide - at ma as she swept out of the Hall, I walked up the stairs, followed by Var.

“I’m - not really.... wanting to....” He went so red over his cheekbones that I would have bet a piece of paper would have gone up from the heat.

“Of course not. There’ll be plenty of opportunity. But my mother.... I just needed to shut her up. The woman’s....” I sighed. “No. I’ll not be maligning her as she IS my mother. Still, I’ll be perfectly happy to share the bed with you. Without the extracurriculars. We’ll save those for somewhere else, shall we?”

We slept deeply, and I at least got more rest that night than I had in some while. We rose early, washed, dressed, and grabbed sandwiches from the kitchen. G’ma, heavy-eyed (she never rose at dawn any more), met us even as early as it was - to say that Vintan was held in chains in the cell downstairs. There would be guards on him all hours; ma’s brother Rendir was a decent enough mage, and would be sharing that “magical” guarding with his son Tendor. That was about all we could hope to do for now.

Then she bid us good cess from the doorstep, and a good journey as well. “Go back to bed, g’ma. I’ll send a courier an’ I can find one handy.” She waved and went back inside, leaving us to saddle the horses and head for Solitude.

We rode at a steady long-walk - the horses, my slim Hammerfell-bred and Var’s sturdier Skyrim type, matched well at that pace, where they would not have at other gaits. We talked a bit about Vintan, and then I asked “Should we go into the city first? Perhaps there will be things you need to see to? You’ve been gone a while....”

Slanting me a quizzical glance, Var chuckled. “No. Whatever might have come up can wait. It’s not as if I’ll always be in Solitude - or any other city - so people can forever keep track of me, you know!”

I sent him an arch look. “Well, that’s a bit - lackadaisical, wouldn’t you say?”

“Only if I want the entirety of Skyrim interrupting us just when it gets - interesting!”

I laughed heartily. “Oh, well played! I’m so glad you have a sense of humor!”

“And so am I that you have one. Of a certainty there will be times when we need to be the sober couple running the country - but when those times are done, well, as long as we have laughter and love....”

I stretched my hand out to meet his as it sought mine, and we rode through the brightening morning with pleasure, and linked by those hands. We weren’t discounting the tasks ahead - but as long as we had love.... and each other.... well, I felt there was little we couldn’t handle.

48 - and - oh HELLS - why is Melki pulling a hard-ridden mount around in front of us?

My eyes were like to fall out of my head as he brought the horse to a dead stop right in front of us. “Melki! What....?

“Tier - Vintan’s gone. He hurt Tendor - not bad, but enough though he’ll mend. And then he grabbed da....” Tears flooded Melki’s eyes. And mine.

“Damn damn damn him! I should have just killed him where he lay.” Var’s tone of voice was grim and bitter.

I laid a hand over his. “No. Neither of us could do that. Well, then. Mel - rest up before you ride back.” I looked at Var, he nodded, and we lit out with the literal hells on our heels.

And as I’d thought earlier, his horse was hard put to keep up with Vigilant. So - first thing was, get him one of ours. I’d have to call it an early wedding gift....

We were back home in less than half the time. I told Var off to the Hall while I helped deal with our horses, then I myself ran like a rabbit to the common room. They were all there - but da. And ma, predictably, was blaming it all on me....

“You’re an unnatural child” she shrieked as she saw me. “Just look what you’ve done. Your da’s likely dead, and you off on a pleasure jaunt with yon git....” At that though, she realized who “yon git” was, and shut the hells up. I’d never really been in charity with my mother - and the longer my life went on the more it was so. I just gave her a cold look and turned to g’ma.

“Nah then. He’s fine. He’s not happy, but he’s not hurt. Unlike Tendor - though he’ll mend as Melki likely told you. Sorry to have to haul you back here, especially as you’ve a daedra on the boil, and yourself, your highness - belike you have things need tending in Solitude.”

He shook his head, put an arm around her, and then the other around ma. Well, he was definitely a diplomat.... “I’ve sent word to the Palace steward that I’m dealing with a threat to the province - as I am. We’ll sort this out eventually; until we do, I’ll beg lodging of you.”

Ma sobbed, and suddenly grabbed me around the middle. “Tier, Tier - I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said any of it. But I’m so....” Aye - she was. She hadn’t the ability to deal with life on her own.... and with da gone only the hells - and Vintan - knew where.... well, she was lost. I let her sob on my shoulder, patting her head. Again, the thought went past: when did I become the mom....?

G’ma sent me a grim look, and g’da took over patting ma’s head as I moved to Var and my grandmother.

“Let’s go into the safe room. Ger will deal with your mother.” And that was about the frostiest I’d ever heard g’ma speak of her daughter-by-marriage. I didn’t reply, just followed after with Var.

He sighed. “Lady - I should have just killed him when I had the opportunity. He’d already done so much damage....”

I pinched his wrist. He just glanced at me and then back to g’ma. She grinned, which shocked him I could see.

“Not for worrying, either of you. Tier, you know your da. My guess is he promoted the whole thing - to get your” she nodded at Var “git of a brother out of our hair. My son is - a very excellent bard. There’s no way that Vintan is going to be able to subvert him, hurt him, even damage him a little.”

Var seemed doubtful. I just pinched him again. “She right. I’m not upset, not about da. I’m upset about ma. But by all the hells in Oblivion, I’m glad he didn’t take ma!” I shuddered - and saw g’ma do the same.

Var looked from me to g’ma and back. “Um. You know.... I remember da’s steward making snide remarks about the fact that the Ravens knew way too much about way too many things....”

We both laughed outright, though quietly. It wouldn’t do for ma to hear after all. “Oh aye love. We’ve always known too much in the minds of those who don’t. I hope that’s not going to put you off me?”

He hauled me into what I now thought of as his signature embrace, kissing me soundly. “Don’t be silly. With you married to me, there can’t possibly be another ‘cloak uprising, can there?”

G’ma chuckled. “Oh, I do love a man who knows not only his own mind, but how to leverage his wife’s abilities!”

They both just grinned at me as I shook my head, my face bright red.

“Regardless, we need to figure out where Vintan’s gone, and how to get da back....”

The dirty fetcher,,,,though now I wonder if was Vintan's idea, or Bal's? If Vintan acted on his own, it might just bring Bal down on his head.

And oh that mother of Tier's!! Yikes...I like her g'ma MUCH better, LOL.

Love it Sis!

Thank you Sis!

Eh, Tier's mother is - um - well.... I have experience of the sort. And that's all I'll say. As for Veri - well, there are those who have no love for her. But I'm not one of them, nor is any of her blood family.

Veri.... is a force to be reckoned with. Idiot daedric princes like Molag Bal should probably keep that FIRMLY in mind. But of course, being the dimwits they are....

49 - Interlude II

Sighing, the older man looked at the mirror-image of Vartain, the High King. “So. You’ve got me, you’re loose again, no one’s dead this time. What do you plan next?”

“Shut up, old man. They’ll come looking for you. And then.... and then - I’ll have my brother to kill. And your daughter to wife. After of course, I’ll be High King - because no one knows....”

“Don’t be silly. Everyone knows by now. My family’s not one for keeping quiet on things like this.” And that was a flat lie - they WERE known for just that - but a lie was far better in this instance.... especially with a little bit of “bard magic” behind it.

The color fled Vintan’s face. And then rushed back, as his temper broke. He began to pummel the man - Tier’s father, the bard. Eventually, he couldn’t see anything but Vartain. And that bitch. And her father.

He kept hearing something odd - at the edges of knowledge. Finally, he stopped, realizing his hands were bloody and painful. He looked up at Tier’s father.

Who wasn’t there.
