A nudge is always good! You write so well. I know you're not feeling it right now, but I'm sure you will eventually! I'll possess my soul in patience.

63 - Equally obvious - Gratian was really on to something.

And it’s too bad he didn’t get to see what all is here, and get credit for it! Of course, at his age I’m not sure how he’d have dodged the swinging blades - all ten or so sets of them - to get into the heart of this tomb-complex....

We managed - me first as I’d seen this sort of setup before - then Var. It’s all a matter of timing naturally; you have to watch the blades swing both directions, count the beats, then run on the “away” beat. At least these had plenty of room between sets - unlike some I’ve had to dodge.

We approached the open gate quietly, trying not to stir anything up. Unfortunately.... there was some sort of “exalted” draugr in the room beyond the gate. It was.... unlike any I’d ever seen before - bone and muscle strips like “normal” - but with armor, a strange cloak, and a crown. And eyes that glowed with a horrible light. It knew we were there, and began throwing shock spells at us - well, vastly more powerful spells, like lightning tamed to its will I suppose you could say.

We settled back one on each side of the gate just outside the room where it was, and whispered - trying to come up with a plan of attack.

“Var, best would be for me to use a ward spell, and then go keep its attention on me while you charge it. If you can get to it quick enough....”

“I don’t like it. But I’m no archer - and I’m fast enough. Hopefully I’m fast enough.”

So that’s what we did. I used the one minor ward spell I knew (and life these days would have been MUCH simpler had I not decided magic had no place in it - it’s quite amazing how decisions made young can manage to bite you later....) I slithered around the corner into shadow - but I knew it knew I was there.

I sent several arrows at it before it really locked on my position. And then I was trying not to go down under a barrage of lightning. “Hurry Var! Please....” I don’t often beg.... but my ward was shredding with every second. Damn that draugr had a lot of magicka.... it hadn’t let up for one second!

And then Var was on it - literally. He landed feet first, launching himself from the top of a chest in the center of the room. That broke the lightning attack off me, and I sent more arrows at it, though of course I had to NOT hit Var.... not as easy as it sounds I might add!

Var had Darksight out now, and with a roar, he began to slash and strike at the draugr. And suddenly - oddly - I heard music as he whirled the sword about the two of them. What WAS that? Oh shut it Tier, just kill the damned thing!

Eh, well, finally it died. And how strange to think of something undead as dying.... but - well, I don’t want to consider that for about a hundred years....

We slumped to the stone near the chest. Finally I tested the water about the area. It was clean, so we drank deeply. Then I looked inside the chest. TWO SEPTIMS??!! I sighed. “It was supposed to be a trap I guess.... For adventurers not as clever as we, it likely would have been their end....”

Var nodded soberly. “Well, let’s see if we have a way out of here through there.”

We edged carefully up to a room with an open gate. Inside we could see a ramp circling up, some chests and shelves, a waterfall.... and a pedestal - with some very strange book on top. Var, seeing we were now alone, strode to the pedestal. “DON’T!” I shrieked. He pulled his hand back.

“I’m getting some truly odd feelings from that book. I - don’t think we want to meddle with it.... It - feels of daedra to me.... and we have more than enough problems with daedra right now....”

He glanced at me, then hurried to my side. “Tier. Are you all right? You’re white as linen...”

“It’s - this place, the book. We need to get out of here. Ten seconds ago would have been optimal....”

“All right. Let’s go up the ramp. Hopefully there’s an exit....”

Thank you! Neither of these two are dragonborn (after all, THAT was Veri....) so the Black Book wasn't happening. Though.... hmmm....

Yeah.... maybe....

Because the best way to deal with one daedra problem - is generally another daedra....

Thanks! I keep mulling over the line from Lackey's Oathbound - about being sent off looking for snow roses for the Ethereal Varirs.... It's poking at me something fierce....

64 - So, we’re free of that place.... but my mind insists on seeing the Book....

There was - so we fought our way out of a bunch of bandits, or reavers as they seem to be commonly styled here. After that.... well, we ate some of the actually decent food they’d cooked and slept on the only real bed in the place. If they’d just waited to find out what we were doing “invading” their territory.... but they didn’t. So now they’re worm-food - and we’re not.

There’s a lesson there somewhere....

Var slanted me a look. “You’re fretting. Out with it....”

“I... Remember, g’ma had her issues with daedra. At some point I remember her saying if one prince is in it, depend on it, there’s another one you can get to help. I - think - that Book....”

“Tier.... from what little I know (and you’re probably far better versed there than I am) that Book is something of Mora. It’s - got an interest in books, knowledge....”

“Aye. It does. And that makes me think we could bargain with it. Take Bal out of the equation - out of our lives. Yes. We’d owe it a boon....”

Var went thoughtful - for a good long while. One of the many things I’d come to love about him - and in so short a time for all that! - is that he thinks....

“So. You’re - wanting to open the Book, do whatever it gives us to do, and at the end bargain with Mora for help against Bal?”

“Yes.” Baldly stated - with no attempted mitigation or pretenses thereof.

“Why?”

I struggled a bit with that one. Finally.... “Because Mora is more concerned with hoarding everything there is to knowledge, rather than using it for either ill or good. And Bal.... well, there’s nothing good of it at all. Not a thing. Quite the opposite in fact....” My stomach turned on that thought.

Var sent a strange look my way. “Are you all right? You look a - bit - unwell....”

“I’ve.... just been thinking about what could happen with Bal loose in the world. It - made me ill for fair....”

He hauled me into a hug, followed by a deep loving kiss. “Good thing only one of us has an imagination. Just you thinking it scares me. But.... I’m in agreement, as far as what I know - which isn’t much, mind you!”

I just wound myself deeper into his embrace. I didn’t want to do this.... but something inside me said I had to.
