84 - ....and I hope I can figure out what’s going on with Var! I ignored the frown for the moment, and threw myself at him. Fortunately, he decided to catch me instead of dropping me on the floor.... Oh, now - that’s interesting, a very.... satisfying, lengthy kiss didn’t have Bal stirring.... Hmmm. When he finally sat me back on my feet, he looked down with a glint in his eyes. “Well, at least you appear to have missed me.” The stunned look on my face must have been a dead giveaway, since he took my arm, turned me around, and headed for the inn’s door. He looked back at Melki, and said “We’ll be back. Don’t worry.” He pulled me out toward the old Earth Stone of the All-Maker, a Skaal place of spirit. “Okay, Vartain. Out with it. You looked - murderous when we walked in.” “I - was. I didn’t - I only met your brother a couple of times, and I didn’t recognize him to start....” “So you assumed I was sneaking around Solstheim with your replacement?” I suppose my frosty tone of voice should have warned him.... He flushed red over his cheekbones. “I did. I’m - “ He was probably going to say “sorry” but instead I pitched a hissy fit. I did forbear to hit him this time, but he eventually began backing away from me toward the pool around the stone. I didn’t warn him, and he stumbled over the edge and went down in the water with a huge splash. And that effectively shut me up, forcing me over into laughter. Var hauled himself out of the water grumbling under his breath. “Are you quite finished, Tier?” I gulped a couple of times on the near-hysterical laughter. “Aye. I’m not - precisely - sorry. I am sorry that you thought - what you thought. Didn’t anyone tell you I was with Melki?” “Verinne did. But - even though I knew it.... I still thought.... the wrong thing. I’m sorry. But I’ve wanted you so much, I can’t even function....” Well, that was a facer. “Var.... I’m here to read the damn books and try to get Mora to help us out here. That’s the only reason I’m doing this. Well.... that and.... I simply can’t be in the same country with you or....” He hauled me against him. “I know. I know. This.... it’s just - how much it hurts that you’re here and.... I’m not helping you with this.” We held each other for a long time. Finally, “Look. We’d better go back and show Mel we’re both still alive. And I’m starving. We’ll eat, and I’ll tell you what we’ve got so far.” “That works. I - need to be back in Solitude in a day or so. The Jarls want a meeting.” “Outside of a moot?” My eyebrows flew toward my hairline. “Yes. Apparently they think I should be married. Soon.” “They - don’t have any right....” “No, of course not. But when would that have ever stopped any of them?” Oh gods. Hmm. “Well. Now, how about we go home with you, and you introduce me as the woman you’ll be marrying once we’ve settled a few issues? We don’t have to detail those issues, do we?” His face lit up with the most relief I think I’ve ever seen from a man. “That’s - perfect. We’ll do it!” He grabbed me again, and I fell into him, just like I had from the beginning. And still no Bal.... |

LOL, oh good one Sis! If I were Var, I'd be thinking of the utter indignity... Strange, that Bal didn't make any untoward presence known. |

Thanks Sis! Well, Var probably is, but isn't willing to expose that to her.... heh. And that was actually out of memory (mine) - an old boyfriend who did just that when I (justly) got in his face over.... things.... I was probably about 16, he would have been college-age ('cause that's the only guys I dated.... WAY older than me....) We were at one of the hotels on the Strip, one with fountains. It was maybe 1 am. He was trying to "make nice" over something - which I wasn't having any of. I wasn't yelling - I was being very quiet, but - well - when I get like that.... you really don't want to be the subject thereof.... He fell over into the fountain. And I, predictably, giggled. He was offended, but admitted I had a point (I did - I never berate people unless I'm RIGHT) - but the next time he called, I thanked him and said it was time to part ways. |

Not quite...the year was 1972, and he was I think 22or 23. I was not quite 20 at the time. We were standing in the living room of the house he shared with my wife (yep, still married) and he puffs out his chest and starts trying to be intimidating. I looked him dead in the eye and told him he'd best not mess with me, I was there to visit my kids... and I'm always armed. He thought about it a minute, taking in the tank top and blue jeans I was wearing that really didn't leave much space for weapons, and he said "Bullshit!" I told him I carry the deadliest weapon earth... my hat. I then whipped off the little Greek Fisherman's cap I was in the habit of wearing, and started beating him about the head with it. You may think this strange, but if you're fast enough, a guy can be completely befuddled and bemused in that sort of situation. After 3 or 4 seconds of beating on him with the hat, I took one finger and pushed him over backward. The wife had spent a few days housecleaning, and the last thing she did was clean out their stove... of course Mark landed (unintentionally on my part) on his ass right on the sack of soot she had left sitting by the stove. Clouds of soot exploded out of the sack, giving Mar a whole new racial appearance, and basically coating everything in the house with a layer of black, oily, griminess. So the soon-to-be-ex wife suddenly didn't like either one of us very much, but I didn't really care... I laughed all the way home. :D Edited by neildarkstar, Apr 20 2017, 10:37 PM.

85 - I just don’t get what’s up with Bal.... I haven’t felt a niggle in my mind. At all. I finally experimented with dropping the “walls”. Still nothing. This of course made me extremely nervous. The enemy you are able to see is far better than the one that’s gone missing.... Of course, we hadn’t slept in the same bed. THAT was all too risky at present. And today, the interactions between my betrothed and my brother were pretty much just as I’d figured they’d be - like a pair of feral dogs circling the meat.... Being tired of it, I stood suddenly from the table, and stalked out of the Netch. “High dudgeon” doesn’t even BEGIN to describe my temper. And that suddenly caused me to stop short and think - and probe. Ah. Unable due to non-proximity to get any satisfaction out of Var and me, and finding I’d let down those “walls”, Bal had pushed against a different area - one where I’d already decided there might be some issues. ‘No. You don’t get to do THAT either, monster. Leave off. I’ll find all your tricks. And eventually.... you’ll be gone. I won’t. And neither will my family. You’d best accept defeat right now. It’ll save you a lot of time - and agony.’ I felt something - stretch - snap - and relax. And Bal was gone. It was bothering me some, that I could feel all that. I wondered if Neloth could advise a bit about this. After all, he was supposedly a master wizard of a race - and House - so superlative..... Then again, if nothing else, he had no problem blowing his own horn.... Those in Raven Rock weren’t so happy with him. Well, it was a thought. It might be a good idea - or it might not. At that point, Var and Mel exited the Netch, crossness on both faces. I rolled my eyes and muttered “So. What is it NOW?” Melki said, quietly “So you’re going back home to plight troth with the High King. What do you think might happen to the family?” I was startled. “Why - what should happen? Sure, there will be some fathers unhappy that mine has the daughter Var’s going to marry....” “Sis. THINK. If you make this public, Bal’s going to have a field day. The girls will be coming out of the woodwork, hoping you’ll choose them as handmaids, lap dogs or whatever. What happens when Bal starts picking them off?” I knew I was sheet white by the time he finished, and only a tiny way from either fainting or screaming. And Var - he was white as well. “But - if we say we’re not..... no, you’re right. It wouldn’t matter if we weren’t planning to wed five years from now - there would still be.... Ugh.” Tears filled my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. “Yes. You’re right. We - can’t. So. Var - you can’t.... even pretend to betroth some innocent as a ploy. What can we do?” I felt - helpless. Like when I woke in that cold oubliette so long ago. I purely HATE feeling helpless.... Var fell into what da called a “brown study” - something I’d seen him do on occasion, usually when a ballad wasn’t coming right. And he didn’t resurface for quite a while. When he did, he was still white around the mouth, but had a firm tone to his voice, and his eyes were narrowed against reaction. “I’m going to figure something out. You two - finish the books. Tier.... do you think that wizard might have some ideas?” My brows flew toward my hairline. “I’d - already - thought I should talk to him about it. He’s.... abrasive - in the extreme! But perhaps he may have some ideas....” Melki nodded decisively. “Fine. We’ve been here too long, so it’s time to move.” So it was. But I threw myself into Var’s arms, shaking with sobs I didn’t loose. He held me close, and then walked away toward the Northern Maiden. Edited by Serethil, Apr 21 2017, 07:46 PM.
