Aw, thanks! Well, I was personally angry for her myself. This lady has an - interesting - personality.... I'm still plumbing its depths. She's a total individual - in a world which still sees people in a "he fights bandits she cooks meals" sort of way - except for mercs and bandits. But Tier isn't either a merc or a bandit. She can cook, clean, make gear, mend clothing, gentle a horse, slither past a bad situation, kill the offenders in a different bad situation, fall in love, fall out of love.... And if you ever saw her with a child, you'd KNOW she was female even if not dressed as one.... |

11 - If I can’t find him at Windstad, then what? I didn’t know.... but it isn’t going to be good if he’s not at Windstad Manor (or the mine, really a better place to hide in some ways) - because if that’s not where he is, he could be anywhere in Skyrim.... I pushed that idea away in a hurry. I didn’t even want to think about that. And then I remembered the ruins just up the hill from my home. Hmm. Well, first I needed to go to the mine and talk to Torvik. So I rode out there on one of the stable hacks. My gelding was a bit lame for some reason; I’d looked at his foreleg, couldn’t see anything really bad, but I left him in a poultice just in case and rode a nice little mare from the stable. It took less than an hour to make the mine. I walked into the office and found Torvik with his head in his bookkeeping. “Torvik, I need to talk to you. I don’t know if you know what happened....” He gave me a grim look. “Oh aye. We all knew once your gram got the note. What did you want to talk over?” “Have you had anyone new hire on in the last couple of weeks?” I sighed when he shook his head. “Well then.... have you seen anyone odd wandering around the Manor?” “Oh, aye, that I have! There was a man with a boy along. They had a small wagon behind one old horse. They passed by here, and headed up the slope by the road toward the Manor. I went along after, since you weren’t home. He said his name was Benolo Maligretti, and his son was Bengovo. He said he was a tinker - a man who could repair anything. “I told him you were away on business, and perhaps he should go elsewhere first. He agreed. They turned their wagon toward the bridges to Solitude.” He paused, looking worried, then continued in a harder tone “I sent Matucho to follow them. He was gone overnight, but when he returned he said they were settled into the docks area at Solitude, with a small booth, a portable forge setup - I’d like one of those myself!- and plenty of trade. “They were the only out-of-place folk I’ve seen since before you left. Are - are you thinking the man who stole you away might be.... at the Manor?” Torvik seemed nervous and a bit pale. And something about his tale didn’t ring true. But being wiser than my years, I simply smiled and thanked him. “Well, it’s good I have you to look out for things out here! No, I don’t think the kidnapper is here. I was just trying to cover any possibilities. Well, I’m off home then. I need about a month of sleep....” I saluted him, and remounted the mare, following the laid stone road up to the Manor property. I hated to think it.... but I was all but positive that Torvik had lied. And - he’d lied because he was somehow involved. My heart hurt at that - our family had been good to his.... They were near to wealthy themselves, and owned their own land in Hjaalmarch due to Tovis becoming g’ma’s mine manager. I wondered if talking to Tovis would be a good idea. And then I decided not to. I didn’t want to upset him - at least not before I had to. But Matucho.... no - I couldn’t say anything to him either, because it would be likely he’d tell Torvik. I gritted my teeth. I hated this.... I rode into the Manor yard, seeing nothing out of place - but it felt wrong. Completely wrong. Instead of dismounting, I wheeled the mare and set her at a decent pace back to Morthal. I’d stay with ma and da until I got to the bottom of this. I felt like a coward - but living was the important thing just now. I’d come all too close to losing life.... |

12 - And if I can't believe the mine manager, we are in worse trouble than I thought! I groomed the mare, cleaned the tack, and gave her hay and grain. It was interesting that no matter Morthal was in the middle of the swamps, the drier areas outlying grew really good hay. Definitely helpful - hauling hay from Whiterun wasn’t any fun at all - as I’d found out in a bad weather year when I was in my early twenties. Sighing, I rubbed my forehead. The family was NOT going to like this. No, wasn’t my fault - but being the messenger with the bad news is iffy. They wouldn’t of course kill me for bringing the news.... but they’d be unhappy. And the first thing they’d want to do would be haul up Torvik along with Tovis. Can’t let them do that.... for all the same reasons I hadn’t already done it! Better talk fast, girl.... I decided to start with g’ma and g’da. Unfortunately, ma and da were there too. Gritting my teeth, I called a meeting, and started it. “Now, please - just listen all the way through before you go off half-cocked, seriously. I have reasons for what I’m going to say, so - please.” I stopped for nods - got them - didn’t know if they were really agreeing, or just nodding to shut me up. “All right. Here’s the situation.” After laying it out for them, exactly as it had happened - and thanking my luck that I was good at remembering whole conversations, so could adequately report what Torvik had said - there were shocked looks on all their faces, and outrage starting. I could read it in the flush on cheeks and necks, in the rigidity of the way they sat. “See you. We can’t talk to any of them about it - not Torvik, not Matucho, and certainly not Tovis! It’s unlikely in the extreme that Tovis is involved - but think! How would you all feel if I was the one running a rig and got caught!” Da looked down and then back at the others. “She’s right. We can’t do that to him without proof. So then, daughter. What do you propose?” The fact that he pulled out Bard’s Command voice made me wince. I wasn’t planning to NOT tell them, after all! I sent him a sidewise look, and he just winked. Ah. He’d put a bit of something in that for the rest of them too then. Well, I hoped it helped.... they weren’t going to like this.... “I’m going to be bait. We have to draw this person out. We don’t know who we’re fighting, or why.” The uproar was less than I figured on - bless Da after all. But it was bad enough.... “No, I don’t actually think this is going to be fun!” That to ma - she’d always been a bit off as far as what I did, and now, after I’d been held against my will, she was likely going back to wishing I’d just done what most women did. It wasn’t that I had anything against marriage and a family - it was just that I’d never met a man I could stand to think about as a husband. And of course - she didn’t know (maybe) that I was anything but virgin.... “I’m going to go back out to the Manor tomorrow - to spend the night. I won’t be sleeping. I’ll be trying to trap a killer.” |

Heh. Well, no.... not so much. I just didn't write all of that. Not to mention, Da's a Bard.... he did some stuff - because HE knows quite well that Tier's going to go her own way. She's much more like him than she is her mother. And HE is, after all, the oldest male Raven at this point in time. |
