- Hiring done; and now I’m supervising Var went home for a few days to deal with the Jarls and their further insistence on him marrying soon. I just shook my head. Where did those hidebound old men (mostly) get off pushing Var on it? G’ma wasn’t pushing of course, but she was the only one. And she had “inside information” too. He hadn’t said if he was going to “unwrap” our wedding to them or not, and I wasn’t pushing him about it. We’d hired twenty miners based on Crescius’s recommendations. Since we wouldn’t be working at night for obvious reasons, they could all do whatever needed doing during the day. I was looking forward to watching masters at work on my project - there would be some actual mining, to reduce areas of rock before cantilevering wooden walkways; and there would be some building of handrails, so there would need to be a certain amount of tree-cutting. The first morning, I held a meeting. “I appreciate your willingness to work for me on Crescius’s recommendation. I want to be clear: this is not a rush project. It will take as long as it does, and I will pay as agreed. I do not want anyone hurt or killed doing this job for me; as I told a warrior not long back, ‘Don’t be a dead hero.’ In your cases, it’s ‘Don’t be dead miners.’ Take things slow until you have a feel for it. Safe is the best thing I can hope for all of you!” The foreman Crescius had suggested was the oldest of the miners, not too old to work, but old enough to maintain control. I left him to it - I don’t know enough about mining to do anything but get in the way! I hunted and gathered - there was a lot of food needed for twenty-one people. Since they were building my path up the peak, it was my job to keep them fed. I’ve always enjoyed the hunt, and I’m not bad at finding herbs and so forth, though the variety on Solstheim was somewhat different. I had discovered a liking for baked ash yams with butter and sugar; the miners looked doubtful the first time I produced that dish, but most of them took to it quickly, saying the butter and sugar made them taste a lot better. I crafted potions too - healing and improvement sorts, but thankfully we didn’t need many of them. The worst injuries in the moon it took to build the path were a broken arm, a sprained ankle, and a dislocated shoulder. At the end of the moon, the path was done. I paid them all in full, and then gave them a healthy bonus. They headed for Raven Rock, and I headed up to the Peak. Atop the height, I looked out over the island. I’d come to enjoy this part of it - the north was much nicer than down near Raven Rock. I settled to my knees, and addressed “my” princes, and Talos Stormcrown. “The basis is laid. I will consider the sorts of your shrines. Lord Talos, it would be a considerable help if you could let me know if you are happy to be included here, or if you would prefer another place.” I paused, feeling some warmth that seemed other than the sun. “I must return to Skyrim, to seek materials for the shrines, and let Var and my family know that things are progressing. I will return as soon as I may!” I felt some sort of - benediction? Perhaps. And I sat on the peak above the world until nearly too dark to get down safely. |

Thanks, Sisters two! Well, if my dreams last night are any indication, yes, they're happy. Not sure about Talos yet.... but da was right - he needs a shrine, a place as well.... |

- Back to Skyrim, family, and love I walked into the Hall, and found nearly the whole family there, as was Var. I wondered if he’d just decided to live here for the time being! He grabbed me and kissed me breathless, with ma scowling a bit and everyone else grinning like mad. I caught everyone up to date on my moon away, and explained I’d need to think over what to do with the shrines, then gather whatever was needed for them before returning to Solstheim. “Da, I’ve asked Talos Stormcrown to somehow let me know if he wants to be on the same peak as the princes, or if he’d prefer somewhere else. You were absolutely right: he should have a place as well.” I looked around the faces, and suddenly I had tears running down my cheeks. “I love you all so much! This whole thing has been an ordeal - for all of us. I need to build a shrine to family too!” Var’s arm went around my shoulders as I sobbed. G’ma smiled. “Tier, you bore the brunt of all this, it’s no wonder you’re feeling weepy!” I finally got myself under control - with only an odd hiccup or two remaining. Edilla was putting food on the table, so we all gathered to eat. She gave me an odd glance, and said somewhat diffidently, “After the meal, if I could talk to you?” “Of course, Edilla. If it’s urgent, I can wait to eat.” “No no. It’s important - to me - but not an emergency....” How strange. Well, after the meal would be soon enough. And after the meal, I wandered into the kitchen, where she was starting to wash the dishes, pots and pans, and cutlery. “Here. Let me wash, while you rinse, dry, and put away. I’m not sure where anything goes any more.” She looked down, a sad smile on her face. “After all the carping I’ve done at you over the years, you would help me?” “Edilla - I’ve never minded your fussing. I know I caused a lot of trouble around here, growing up. In any case, I’m perfectly happy to wash up, so just tell me what’s toward.” “I.... well, I want.... to go to Solstheim with you when you go back. I - have a calling to both Meridia and Azura. I want to be votary to both....” I was stunned. Now, Edilla had a sad life early, as I knew from things g’ma had said: she’d had a love, was set to marry - and he’d gone with the ‘cloaks and died soon after. She’d taken up the task of cooking for the Hall, because g’ma knew she had no gold, and wasn’t likely to get any without help. “Edilla, the only thing - what will we do for a cook?” I smiled to show I was joking. She took me seriously though - she had always been too serious.... “Well, there’s Lendia, my niece. She’s a good cook, and would be happy to come here to live.” “Well, good then. Get her here, and after the shrines are placed on the peak, I’ll take you over and get you a house built.” Ah. Hmmm. “You realize that the people there are mostly Dunmer? There’s a few offshoot Nords in one village, but they don’t have truck with the daedric princes....” “It’s no matter. I will - be involved with the shrines and the princes. Who comes pilgrim will be who counts.” “That’s fine. I just wanted you to understand. So, we’ll leave it at that; but you’ll need to let my grandmother know what’s going to happen.” “Oh, I will! Thank you!” The look of near-adoration on her face made me - extremely uncomfortable, so I left the kitchen as soon as I’d finished the dishes. Perhaps it wasn’t for me - maybe it was for the princes - but I still twitched inside my skin.... |

- Well, that was interesting My dreams this night were.... more than strange. I first heard a conversation between Azura and Meridia, of which I couldn’t remember a word when I woke. They seemed to be very serious and a little worried - but that was just an impression I took to waking with me. And then there was Talos. I was floating on a sea of light. I wasn’t sure where I really was - well, I knew empirically I was at the Hall, in bed - but I thought this might be Sovngarde. I seemed to be moving while floating - rather as if I’d made a mount out of a cloud if that makes any sense at all! - and eventually, my “speed” increased and I was heading “down” into a deep shady forest with trees I’d never seen the like of before. I “landed” near what was probably the single largest tree the world had ever grown - assuming I was even still on Nirn. Marching about it were standing stones of a sort unknown to me. As I looked all around, I realized that a light was - approaching - is the only way I can describe it. The light came nearer, and I saw a Figure in it. I was unsurprised when the Figure reached me, and became the Talos Stormcrown I knew in my own land. “Daughter. You please me greatly. Your honor is a shining star in these days. You have that from your grandmother of course. Her honor is a thing so deep, so wide, and so massive that no one can go over, under or around it! It has been long and long since two such as Verinne Ravenwing and Tiercel Ravenwing have trod the bones of this world. “I would have you make me a shrine in another place from the princes. I do not - abhor - them. But there is another - reason. I never wished to be a godling, you know. Men - well, when they believe something deeply enough, often that wish is father to the reality.... “I am full aware that the Thalmor have always sought to remove me from the minds of men. I have no wish to retain a godhood so contested - except that causing those haughty Mer some pain seems good! However, as long as Nords believe I am their god, well.... then.... I am. And I would not abrogate that destiny since doing so would perforce cause those who came from us - that is we Atmorans - to become bereft of succor.” I nodded. I understood what he was telling me: belief is a strong motivator, and I had always thought that belief could make a thing true. “So then. I would like a shrine built. But to you I leave the choice of place. Search your heart - it is the best part of you, excepting your honor. Be well, daughter. My love and benediction follow you always.” The light faded around me, and I woke in the bed in the Hall. My choice of place.... |

- Interlude: Gremlaith Ulfricsdottar “So my father failed. That doesn’t surprise me. He failed at so many things.... like marrying my mother, acknowledging me as his daughter, finishing the Empire.... What do you think I can do about any of that?” “Well.... there is another daughter. It might.... be a good idea to find her.... No no. She is not sister to you other than by Nord blood. But.... she is also a daughter - of mine. As are you. Your father - well, yes - he failed. But you should get beyond that, you know. The world - well, it goes on apace, and railing at the fate that befell.... “It’s not - useful.” Grem turned to give Talos the worst of her temper. But of course he wasn’t there. |

- My choice of place for Talos’s shrine But that required much thought. So I set about materials for the princes’ shrines. And - contrariwise - they might not be the finest of those materials. Because.... well.... it’s rather difficult to find better materials than starsheen and sunshine and moonglow; not to mention Meridia’s splendor. So I settled to deep thought. And it seemed to me that - gems and jewels of glory notwithstanding.... the best “clothing” for my princes was most likely, simply, light. I let that live in the back of my mind while I caught up with family. After such a horrid time, and losing Hed and Medlan, I thought it wise to just wander the city and be available. First though, I talked to g’ma. “I don’t want to push into your business. But I think that I should - just wander.... so people can talk if they like. After all, I’m NOT the Jarl! As well, I’m the one with most of the interactions so to speak....” “Tier, you’re so like your da! Consummate diplomat - it’s no wonder Vartain thinks you’ll be the best wife for him. “Child, I - well.... I’m almost ready to step down. And it’s you who’ll be the Jarl after me.” I flushed and then paled. “Are you....?” “Nah then, I’m fine. But I’m old. And the world has handed down changes I have a hard time dealing with. I’m not - flexible - any more. And that’s the time when I hand this off to you.” “Eh, well. That’s going to cause issues maybe. How can I be Var’s wife and the Jarl of Morthal?” She just grinned at me. “Well, Var’s already living here, ain’t? So the two of you can rule from here instead of Solitude. Just because Torygg and Var’s dad - whatever his name was - chose to pretend Solitude was the High King’s city doesn’t mean Var and you can’t change that!” Suddenly I laughed. Oh, my grandmother was a witch for sure! “Then we’ll leave it at that for now. And I’ll go be available for whatever people want to say to me.” |
