111 - Now to get a house built for Edilla

I talked to Crescius about a few more railings - and about someone who could build a small house for the princes’ votary. He referred me to Geldis Sadri, who he said would know how to get that handled.

So that was next. Sadri said the thing to do was talk to the Skaal in town - they were the ones who knew building. There were several of them who lived outside of Raven Rock just to the north, and who filled jobs that the Dunmer were less inclined to take - like building houses.

We spent the night at the inn, and next morning headed for the Skaal camp. There was an older man and a young woman, and as we began to chat a couple of younger men appeared with a horker which they set about butchering.

“I am told that you are familiar with building houses. Sera Sadri at the inn recommended I talk to you. I’m Tiercel Ravenwing, and this is my brother Melkioran.”

“Aye. I’m Berrit Wood-Bender. These be my boys, and my daughter. Eldik, Enrik, and Betla. Tell me about this house.”

I started by telling him about the shrines to Meridia and Azura, since I wanted to get past any problem - the Skaal were unlikely to want truck with daedra, and they needed to be fully informed of why a house was needed for Edilla.

He just nodded. “Eh, we heard about it in the town. Seems you did a bang-up job of it.”

“Well, then. Our former cook has offered to become the princes’ votary, assisting pilgrims to the shrines. It’s Edilla who needs the house. I will be bringing her here as soon as a house is ready for her.”

He looked at me, studying something. “All right. It won’t be cheap, but it will be sturdy and depending on size, we can probably have it done in a quarter of the year.”

“It needs a full kitchen, a bathing room, a bedroom, and a sitting area with benches and bookcases. And if you can tell me how much, I’ll give it to you up front.”

“Nah then. Half up front, the rest when it’s done. For that size - 5000 septims.”

I nodded and stuck my hand out. We sealed the deal with a shake, and I handed him the half he asked for.

“Send a courier to find me in Morthal at Highmoon Hall should you need further funds, and when you’ve finished.”

He nodded and smiled. “Ah. You’re the one marryin’ the High King, right?”

I flushed and nodded. “Word does get around....”

“Oh aye, so it does missy! So it does....”

We boarded the Silent Mistress and headed for home. I was glad to be done with the one part of this quest.

112 - And time to think about Talos Stormcrown’s shrine....

Now, I really began to consider where I should build it. The province was crawling with Talos shrines - some had been desecrated by the Thalmor, but most were still intact. I didn’t know where they all were even, but I could remember at least five or six including the huge one in Whiterun.

And that reminded me of g’ma’s killing of Alduin, the World-Eater. And that huge mountain at the center of Skyrim. I left those thoughts to simmer in the back of my mind, and looked up just as Var walked into the room.

Flying into his arms was like homecoming. He fair kissed me senseless, and finally muttered, “Are you home to stay now?”

“Aye. I’ll have to sail Edilla to Solstheim in about three months once the house is done, but after that, it’ll be one hell of a long time before I go back there!”

“I - um - started us a house here in town. This hall’s not what I like for us - I want more privacy....” He flushed over his cheekbones, a sure sign that he wasn’t sure I’d be happy about it.

I arched my brows and teased. “Oh? You did this without asking what I might want in a house? After all, I’m giving up the Blue Palace....” And then as his face fell and he went from red to white, I laughed. “Oh, husband to be - you are just too easy! I’m perfectly fine with whatever we have to live in - as long as we’re in it together!”

He sent me an odd glance. “You know, teasing the High King might not be such a good idea. I could decide to do something about it - like swat you on the rear! After all, I still owe you for belting me in the jaw....”

“Eh, so you do. Have at it then!” I turned around so he could reach the afore-mentioned body part.

“Oh, no. I want to wait until first you’re not expecting it, and second you’re not covered in clothing....”

It was my turn to go red - because da walked in just in time to hear. I rolled my eyes as first he and then Var roared with laughter. Men. Can’t live with them, and the skin’s too thin for book covers.

After dinner he walked me to the new house. It was just started, and he had the plans rolled up under his arm. Spreading them out on a table, he showed me the layout of the rooms. It was actually excellent. And it would be much better for us than Highmoon Hall. I’d have to be in the Hall during the day being Jarl, but it would be lovely to be able to go to a real home after.

I wondered if g’ma knew.... and if she did, was she unhappy? She’d seemed her normal self when she’d greeted me....

Eh, I borrowed the "book cover bit" from Misty. The real quote is "Cats. You can't live with them. And the fur's too thin for a rug." It's from the Mage Winds trilogy, a quote from Karal, the Karsite priestling.

I LOVE me my Misty.... it's about time to dive back into Valdemar.....

Thanks Sis!

Nothing like a little butt-swatting to keep things fresh, eh? :D

One of my favorite movie scenes was the old John Wayne movie McClintock when he was swatting Maureen O'Hara's butt with an object that I seem to recall as being a small coal shovel...

Those old John Wayne movies are my go-to escapes. I ADORE just about anything he every did. My dad loved them too - and he looked like John Wayne.... Daddy was - a relic of that old west. Sadly, he was born in the wrong era.

I see Tier and Var as Skyrim's Katherine and Petruchio....

Thanks sis!

I can't read the Last Herald Mage books - I spend the entire time in tears.... I got through them once and that's it. She's got a new series starting with The Hills Have Spies - think the series is going to be called Herald Family Spies or something like that. Comes out June 3.

113 - After talking to g’ma, I headed for High Hrothgar

I decided I had a couple of things to sort out with my grandmother: about moving out of the Hall, and about what happened during her Dragonborn-ness.

I found her in the safe room, looking over something on the table. As I walked over to her, I saw that it was a journal. “Oh, I didn’t know you kept a journal!”

“I didn’t. This is one of Idgrod’s. Before she got quite so.... absent. I just found it in one of the chests. It’s interesting, but really nothing important now. Were you looking for me specifically?”

“Yes. G’ma, is it all right that Var’s building a house, that we won’t live here in the Hall?”

“Of course it’s all right, Tier! I can’t blame him for wanting a real home. I did too - but after Idgrod died, it made more sense to be in town instead of clear out at the Manor.”

“Good then. I didn’t want you upset with us about that. Now the other thing is - can you tell me something about High Hrothgar when you were in the middle of all that Alduin business?”

She looked down at the journal. “Well.... back then there were four old men living there. They taught me to use the Shouts, and then sent me to deal with the dragon. Since then, I would think they’d all likely died - withered old sticks they were at the time! I was told by Paarthurnax that I was probably going to be the last Dragonborn - because Alduin was really dead instead of just thrust through time like before.

“You go through the old monastery building, out the back and then climb up to the very peak of the Throat of the World. I had to learn a specific Shout from Arngeir to clear the freezing wind and snow so I could get to the top. Likely it’s not a problem now. I know that Paarthurnax died a few years ago....”

“How did you know that?” This was all very interesting to me.

“I - felt his life ending. I think he’s probably in Sovngarde now.” There were tears in her eyes, and I wrapped her in my arms.

She took a deep breath. “Why the questions, Tier?”

“I - think - that’s where I’m going to build Talos Stormcrown’s shrine.”

She looked up at me. “That’s brilliant! Thank the Divines the Thalmor aren’t about much any more!”

“Aye. Pretty sure they wouldn’t be happy about what I’m going to do. All right then. I’m off to climb the Seven Thousand Steps. I’ll leave in the morning.”

She touched my cheek with a hand. “Be careful. Be safe. And don’t be gone long!”
