Dammit, that made me super sad. I didn't think about the time difference, and hearing that Parth died...truly sad. The Graybeards too, a bit. But it IS the perfect place for Talos' shrine!! This was wonderful Sere. *hug*

Such a perfect place for a Talos Shrine.... sad that Paarthurnax passed, but life and death are a circle.

"Ride ride the carousel
Reach for the golden ring
Never to finish but begin again
Life is a circular thing."

And.... from my then 7-year old younger granddaughter: "I love you until a circle stops!"

Thank you my Sisters! Things had to progress - 60 years or so have gone by. Progression.... is painful. But it's the only thing that makes sense.

[And I think in my heart - Paarth couldn't continue to deal with so many major changes to the world he'd known for so long. Not to mention arranging for his brother to be killed in truth. I - feel that he thought it the ultimate betrayal....]

114 - A quiet not-quite-a-ruin

It was eerie. So quiet - too quiet. Of course, this place had likely never known much of the noise of living - from what little I knew of the Greybeards, they spoke little since their Voices were so strong.

And of course, there’d been no women with children here to keep life alive. “Dried up old sticks” indeed! I wandered through the rooms for a bit, and then suddenly there was something alive in front of me!

My heart thumped in fright, and my teeth wanted to chatter. I hit stealth-mode as fast as I ever had - and then crept toward whoever it was going to be; and I was hoping just a vagrant sleeping in a place that still had walls, roof, and beds.

As I neared the figure, it turned to face me. “Ah. The Ravensdaughter’s granddaughter, I believe? I am Master Arngeir, the last of the Greybeards. There will be no more of us.”

I rose from my crouch, and faced him in total shock. He was.... ancient. Almost as stringy and dried-looking as draugr....

“My.... grandmother thought you long dead....” Probably not politic to say so baldly, but I was still dealing with the aftereffects of fright, not to mention hearing him say his name!”

“Well.... I should have been so long since. But I believe I have been left this long - so that I can talk to you. Why have you come here?”

“I - want to build a shrine to Talos Stormcrown - on the very top of this mountain.”

His eyes twinkled though he didn’t laugh outright. “Good thing the Thalmor aren’t so prevalent any more then!”

I laughed. “So g’ma said as well! In any case, due to some - family issues - I promised Meridia and Azura, and Talos Stormcrown - shrines I would build in gratitude for their help to deal with that crisis. My princes are happy with their new homes on Frykte Peak - the highest peak on Solstheim; and now I want to do this for Talos in his turn.

“I haven’t thought about materials and how to get them up there yet; first I need to go up and see if it will be as perfect as I hope.”

“I would be delighted to show it to you. But I fear I’m not going to be able to walk so far in the cold now. However, the chill gales never returned after the head of our order died. Paarthurnax....” He dropped his gaze to the floor, and I thought he was probably holding back tears.

“G’ma - said she felt him die. It’s very sad. G’ma had a great respect and love for him.”

“Thank you for telling me. I - always felt as if we could have done more for Verinne. After she first talked to Paarthurnax, she came back down and sat on the floor there.... and cried. I didn’t know.... what to do, what to say....”

Poor old man - he’d been old then and hermitish. Of course he hadn’t known. “She never failed to give you respect. And in fact, if she knew you were still alive, she’d want to come here herself to talk. If you could manage it....”

“To speak to the last Dragonborn again.... yes. I can do that. Thank you, child! Please, find a courier soon, and ask Verinne to come here one last time.”

“I will. In fact, I will go back to Ivarstead now, there’s probably one at the inn. She could be here in a couple of days.”

So, that’s what I did. I sent the courier off to Morthal, waited until g’ma and g’da arrived, and then escorted them up to High Hrothgar.

G’ma held out her hands to Arngeir and he clasped them. “When Tier told me you were still alive, I had to come! I - thought you all dead, along with Paar....”

“I - think - I was left here these years so I could meet with your granddaughter. She has my permission - though truly she didn’t need it - to go up to Paarthurnax’s aerie to choose a site for her shrine.”

G’da grinned at me. “I’ll go up with you while these two talk over old times, how’s that?”

“I’d like that. Let’s go then!”

Well, I'm a thinkin' and a wonderin'... No more Dragonborn, No more graybeards, so no more shouts. Men will no longer learn the gift of Akatosh, or the gift of Kyne that set them free because there are no more dragons? Or ARE there?

...and what of the need for heroes. Have the Daedric Princes given up mad plans of influence in the lives of men so that heroes are no longer needed to stand against them? Does the battle between good and evil thus end with a whimper, relegated to a soon-forgotten past?

Or, will Daedric Princes find new gifts of power to put in the hands of men, and what form will they take?

Ah.... well.... In my Skyrim, the future has no dragons. They were - an anomaly - brought about because Alduin had been thrown back through time - many times. I - have always felt that Alduin was.... the... Albatross. He was a revenant. He had only one reason for being - to eat time and the world in that time.

He was a - plot point.... that actually went nowhere. That's on the devs. Alduin was a - plot construct. The real deal as far as dragons was Paarthurnax.

That may be true in your Skyrim, but to me, Alduin represented Ouroboros... The Great Serpent that devours its own tail, thus constantly destroying and recreating himself. Along with the rest of the world of course.

Arngeir made it plain that to thwart Alduin was to prevent or delay the birth of the new world that would replace the old one. Fitting since Ouroboros represents the cycle of life. That is, birth, death, rebirth. Alduin was meant to be the same.

Yup. Alduin was meant to be the same. But he.... deviated (according to the devs).

Did you ever read The Worm Ouroboros by ER Eddison?

I went and looked it up online, and... No, I haven't read it. I was uncertain because I have read other books with Ouroboros in the title, but I don't remember much about about them. Books that don't impress me in some way are relegated to a circular file somewhere in the back of my mind... There, they struggle to be remembered, to gain relevance to my world, but alas, it is almost always in vain. ;)

Ouroboros is a major theme in ancient mythologies. It is a - centrist - myth of regeneration. It may tie into eastern beliefs as regards reincarnation. That's not my take on it - it's things I've gleaned from reading.

For myself, I look at the mythological background as "basis in faith". From there I - ask..... does this resonate within myself?

And if so - why?

Further - why would this have some relevance in Skyrim?

There, my feelings are paramount. Skyrim is..... dead-souls riddled. Those souls are - endemic. We deal with them in the game every time we enter a barrow.. We cannot pretend that the game expects us to be unaffected.

And - I'm not unaffected. I want to enter those barrows to send those souls on to whatever future they have. All those undead.... they are to me an imperative. My characters ("I" truthfully) want to to send those undead souls to a better place.

Eh. I'm a sap. Sue me.
