I too am a natural mimic - but I never wanted to sound like those relatives. I lived in Vegas - and.... well.... I was in a HS with a lot of "upper class mormons".... Nope. |

Nice .. love the details of the people! Considering I grew up in "the deep south".. I don't have as much of an accent as one would think.. mostly because I mimic's the kids I went to school with and the new's casters.. who all sound Generically mid-western.. Now that's not to say I can't lay it on really thick when I want to.. I can.. I have.. and most of the time I did it on purpose to piss someone off. |

Thanks sis! Yeah, I can lay it down thick and hard - but it's usually just to piss off my brother. |

I talk like the people I'm around. I don't do it on purpose, or even think about it really, it just is. Work, or any meetings/presentations I have to deal with are different. |

I had problems with that - when I had to take a meeting, or do a presentation.... well, I had more than one boss tell me I was TOO upper class.... *sigh* Thanks Sis, forgot to say so! |

Good reading Sere! Seems like just finding the guy is like searching an ancient ruin for a particular relic, eh? ;) As to the mimic thing, I'm that way too, but I've had some bad experiences result from it. A buddy of mine once asked me to come and spend a weekend in Portland and set us up to stay at his parent's house. It's all fine and well, and I wasn't bothered by the fact that my buddy and his family were black, but... things got sticky when I started talking just like they did, and some people felt I was making fun of them... |

122 - Found! More or less. We took a carriage to Riften. No way to sail there - unfortunately. We got a room in the Bee and Barb, and I asked the young Argonian woman at the counter if she knew of the sculptor. “No, can’t say I do. But my ma and da might. Let me go see if they’ll come and speak with you - they’re older now, and sometimes a bit tottery.” She turned to what was probably family rooms behind her. She was gone a while, then returned followed by a woman I assumed was her mother. She introduced us: “My mother, Keerava. This is the lady looking for the sculptor.” The older woman looked us over. Her voice was gravely. “The name of the man you seek?” “Beran Ostigow. He was a sculptor of busts and statues in Solitude and environs between twenty-five and thirty years ago.” “Huh-hnhh-hu.” She faded into thought it seemed; I hoped she hadn’t fallen asleep! But in just a few moments, she was present again, saying, “Ha! Yess. He stayed here for a few weeks last year and we talked a little on occasion. He was polite - as so many have not been. “He decided that Riften did not suit him - as how could it suit anyone? He removed to Shor’s Stone at that time. I have not seen him since, but you should check there I think.” Var moved to give her some gold, and she stood taller. “No thank you. I was happy to help.” She turned to go back to her rooms. Var looked at the daughter. “Take it for her - and buy her something she wants but won’t buy for herself.” The woman smiled, carefully keeping her teeth hidden. “Thank you. That is kind of you. Now, would you care for a meal?” So we ate and drank - the food was excellent, which I didn’t remember being the case when Keerava and Talen-Jei had kept the inn - I’d recognized her, but she didn’t seem to remember me. Which was fine. And so far no one had mentioned Var being High King.... The bed was better too than I remembered. After a good night’s sleep we headed for Shor’s Stone, which wasn’t a long walk, and I did love walking in the Rift, even if I didn’t have any use for Riften. We made the town by mid-morning. Place still had no inn or tavern, so we headed for the blacksmith just next the mine. Var grinned genially at the man, and explained our search for the sculptor. The blacksmith scratched his scalp with rough nails while he thought over whether he wanted to answer or not - at least, that’s what I thought he might be doing. “Aye. He was here. He still rents yon house - but he’s been gone a week or so now. Think he talked to Gors, one of the miners - maybe he might have said to Gors where he was going. Lemme holler him up.” He went to the mine, moved just inside and bellowed “GORS. Come up!” Shortly an Orc exited the mine, and walked up to the blacksmith. “What then?” “These folks is looking for that Ostigow fellow - did he tell you where he was off for?” Gors the Orc turned to look us over. “Yah, he did. Said he was lookin’ for a quarry he’d heard about out toward the steam swamps. I told him I thought he might be too old to go harin’ off like that, but he just laughed.” “Thank you both! Let me....” Both shook their heads. “We’re good. We’d like to know he’s okay anyway,” Gors said. So we walked back to Riften and took a carriage home. A trip to the steam pools south of Windhelm required the horses after we got to the stables there. |

Ah, the steam pools... I went there once. A naked lady in shallow water that didn't cover her had looked at me and in a snotty voice said "You ought to put some clothes on. Some people might get upset..." :D |

123 - Finally.... Now, I must admit to a fondness for the hot water pools - but the stink.... well, I could really have done without it. Like rotten eggs.... and not very wonderful while pregnant! Still, when it comes to relaxing you all over - there’s nothing better. And without carrying water, heating it, adding it to a tub, and then emptying the tub! Though of course the Manor’s bathing room had piped water, and so would our house in Morthal. We decided to spend the first night in the area inside Eldergleam Sanctuary. It had been years since I’d been there, and Var admitted he’d never seen it. We wandered the paths, gazing in delight at the lushness of plants and water, and the huge tree. It was warm and lovely, and we spread our bedrolls on the grassy bank overhang above the rushing water. Our loving was long and satisfying, just as I fell into sleep, I felt Var’s hand rest on my rounding belly. In the morning, I suggested we go into Kynesgrove, which we hadn’t done the previous day, and see if anyone knew about the sculptor, or where this quarry might be. So we rode back a ways north into town, and went into the inn. The innkeeper remembered him; he stopped for a single night. “Don’t know about a quarry though. I didn’t see which way he headed, but maybe one of the guardsmen did.” The second guard we asked said, “Aye, I was on duty when he left. He headed out the top road and then south toward that old dwarf ruin near the mountains. Don’t think he was going far, he didn’t have much kit with him....” Well, heading for Mzulft was preferable to riding through the rotten smell of the pools anyway! So we rode south, enjoying the fairness of the day, and talked over everything from the house, to the shrine, to the baby. Reaching the ruins, we started quartering the area, looking for anything that might be the quarry. Dusk was near when we found it. It was very small, and easily overlooked. And there was a man camped right in the center at the bottom! We dismounted, and picked our way down toward him. Var asked as we neared him “Are you Beran Ostigow?” “Aye. That be me. Who be ye then?” “My wife wants to hire a sculptor - she’s.... well, here. Tier, you explain.” I smiled. And then I spent some time explaining what I needed and why. The man narrowed his eyes first, when I talked about the princes; and then widened them when I said what the statue of Akatosh was for. “Good thing them Thalmor ain’t thick on the ground any more!” “Yes. Very true. Now, can you do this, would you be interested, or are you going to have to send me to someone else?” He spent some time staring at the clouds. Then - “Well. I want to see where the shrine’s going to be set. And if it feels right, then I’ll want to pick out the block of stone, and then ye’ll need to get it to where it’s going to be put - because I’ll carve it in place. And don’ think I don’t know who ye are by the by. After all, I’m the one did the bust of his da....” I laughed. “Yes, well, when will you be free to start by taking a walk up the Throat of the World?” “Eh, I can meet ye there in a week say? I’ve nearly got what I need from here, just have to load up a handcart and get it back to Shor’s Stone.” Var said “Oh, Gors will be glad to see you. He seemed a little concerned about you.” “Yah. How bad is it to have a worry-wart Orc watchin’ yer every move?” He shook his head. “Agreed then. A week. We’ll wait for you in Ivarstead, at the inn.” He waved us off, and we mounted and headed back to Kynesgrove a little way, then stopped in a copse of trees, set up a quick camp, and had a sandwich each, some water, and then slept. |

I can lay on the Pittsburgh accent pretty thick when I want to, but it actually annoys me a good bit. :D Don't think I can do a southern accent. Wow, Sere! Tier and Var have been busy while I was away! :book: Glad to see they found their sculptor without too much hassle. I thought for sure he'd have been captured or gone somewhere he shouldn't have. |
