124 - I’m glad Ostigow isn’t as old as Var thought he might be!

Because the climb up to Paar’s Aerie is anything but easy beyond the Seven-Thousand Steps. G’da’s spry still, and he had problems, though with help we got him up there. Which I agreed not to tell anyone....

Var and I stayed the week in Ivarstead. I’ve always loved that area, and Var hadn’t spent any time there at all, so we hiked, and rode, and swam, and hunted - and made long slow luxurious love anywhere that seemed appropriate. I’d finally got beyond the unsettled stomach due to being pregnant, so now I felt pretty good most of the time, though I was still tired by afternoon most days.

It didn’t seem to bother Var; he just settled me under a tree while he fished, or wandered around looking things over like a complete tourist.

Considering what life was going to be like soon-ish, it was really a nice thing to have this week out of time, completely to ourselves. I fell more in love every day, and while in my entire previous life, I’d never been pregnant, I had on various occasions really yearned for children. So now, being in love, married, and with motherhood impending, I was about as happy as I could ever remember being.

I was a bit - iffy - about being involved with the province’s political issues, but I supposed I’d get used to it. Some of the snide remarks after we’d married without much pomp and circumstance had caused me to go cross-eyed furious, until Var just grinned and said “They’re all jealous. Don’t let it get to you.”

I had to hope I didn’t meet many of fawning-over-him women. I - had precious little patience with that sort of thing! Not to mention I was fairly possessive, and trying to make myself get over it....

So we whiled away a week in a virtual paradise for us. And when Beran Ostigow was a day late, I was worried. But he showed up the next afternoon, saying only “Eh, took me longer to get home than I thought - had more in th’ cart than is good for me to deal with now.”

We ate a good meal, got him a room, and readied to set out the next morning.

Ah, idyllic moments of bliss treasured for those later years,
To be recalled when the 3am crying of the babe fills the lover's tortured ears...

Well, at least you're poetic about it neil! Thank you both!

[I had that most precious of babies - the one that slept all night from about two weeks old. Believe me, I'm aware I was the LUCKIEST WOMAN IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.]

Beautiful time...

and my Son was the same way.. slept from day one... made up for it later ( age 6 or 7), he rarely slept more than 6 hr's a night, generally 4.. 11 pm to 4 am.. 5 sometimes.. 6 when I was really lucky. He knew what he could eat and he watched TV... yeah, I know.. but I actually need 6 hr's of sleep.. 8 is better! Later he had his PC games and more thing's he could fix himself to eat.

Sounds like you gals just didn't have enough kids to get the full range of experience...

My oldest boy would sleep maybe 3 or 4 hours a night, then get his sleep out in the afternoons for another 3 or four hours... and you could NOT keep him awake during the afternoon. that boy could sleep through anything.

Eldest daughter on the other hand, well... she seemed to know from day one that her mother hated her guts, and returned the feeling. She'd cry at night if I wasn't holding her... and I mean all night until I did. Her mother couldn't get anywhere with her. So, I'd cradle that little girl-baby all night while we slept in my lazy boy with her in my arms, then leave for a 12 hour shift at work about 6am.

Younger son, wife and I were both working graveyard, so I don't know if he slept at night or not. The baby sitter never complained though. Youngest daughter was sometimes good for days on end, then keep us up all night for days on end. She was the rowdy one...

There was an old Star Trek episode (dunno if was original or second generation) that had these "settlers" the Enterprise had picked up for relocation. There was this one old Irish guy who, after sharing a drink, said "Every moment of pleasure in life must be purchased with a moment of pain..." Then he looked over and seeing his daughter approaching with stormclouds in her eyes, he continued with "...and here comes the pain now..."

My kids were kinda like that, eh? :D

It does. I'd have been perfectly happy never being a mother. But for some people it's a lifelong sadness that they can't be parents.

Aside from the four mentioned above, I also have three stepchildren... Guess it's a good thing I always liked kids, eh? I don't know that I ever really set out to have so many, but life happens, eh? I've never had cause to complain. Much... ;)

125 - As an artist, Beran’s the real deal.

He was actually easier with the climb to the Aerie than g’da had been - but then, he was probably some younger. And when we finished the last steep push, and stopped before the half-circle of the old word-wall, his eyes lit with a deep-seated flame - as if he could see exactly what to carve because of where we were.

Turning to me, he asked “Lady, do ye know what this place was?”

I watched him a bit warily, but answered truthfully. “Yes. This was Paarthurnax’s Aerie. He was the head of the old Greybeards’ order; and Alduin the World-Eater’s brother. He - forced himself to give over any evil in his soul, to aid Nirn in the time of Alduin’s depredations. My grandmother is the Last Dragonborn. She knew Paar very well, and the Greybeards as well as any ever have perhaps. This” - I waved a hand at the word-wall - “is known as a ‘word-wall’. Back in the dragon times, a Dragonborn could walk into the area, and a Word of Power would imprint itself on his or her mind, to be unlocked with a Dragon soul that the Dragonborn would ‘absorb’ after killing a dragon.

“And forgive my pedantry if you already knew all that!”

However, he was smiling at me. “I knew some - but not all that! So thank ye fer that. I see yer intent now. Talos was ne’er a dragon-slayer. Them shrines.... they’re just wrong. So - we’ll be doin’ this one right. But what I need t’ know.... how we get a huge block o’ stone up here?”

I winced. I was pretty sure I could make that happen. But it was going to require talking to Neloth again.... I sighed.

“Well. I know a Dunmer mage. So if you can find the stone you want, I’ll.... see about coercing him to move the block here. Do you - need it perched on top of the wall in order to carve?”

“Aye. With scaffolding.”

“Where’s the stone you want to use?”

“Nah then, I don’ know yet. I’ve to wander the world some. This - well, it needs to be prime stone, as it’s a shrine to Talos, and to Akatosh too....”

True enough. “So, you wander, and I’ll - talk to the mage again. Now. Costs. Tell me what your best estimate is, and I’ll give you whatever you think is fair of it up front. That way you won’t have to worry about living while you’re looking for the stone.”

He drifted off around the area while he thought that over. Eventually he stopped by the ledge above Paar’s bones. We walked over to him.

“That - was Paarthurnax, my grandmother’s dragon. She actually rode on his back several times. They were - very good friends.”

“I... would like to use his bones for this shrine. If ye think he’d not mind, nor yer gran.”

I looked at Beran, awed at how his artist’s mind and soul worked. “That.... would be - perfect. Thank you. I will tell her how you will honor him - and her.”

So we wended our way down the mountain, and spent the night with Arngeir in the hall. I explained to the old Greybeard what we had discussed, and the first actual smile I’d seen on his face bloomed.

“It is a good thing you do, Ravensdaughter! You give us all honor, just as Verinne the Dragonborn did so long ago!”

“Master Arngeir, I would ask that you live long enough to see this complete. I will think on a way to bring you to the Aerie when it’s ready....”

He smiled again. “I will - wait that long then. However long it takes.”
