Interlude: Arngeir

I - was ready to fade, to go on to Sovngarde, to my long home. And something barred the way. So I stayed. And Verinne’s granddaughter came to High Hrothgar. So - that was why I had to stay in the world.

And then, she brought her grandmother to the Hall again, and such a nice talk we had, over old times and new.

Now, she is building this new shrine to Talos Stormcrown. The one which will show him blessed by Akatosh, not ready to kill a dragon. I don’t know where that atrocity originated! And - yes - I will forego Sovngarde until it is done.

It would not surprise me to find that a dragon will return once more to carry me up there to Paar’s Aerie. And - that is where I will die, and go to my long home.

126 - Back to Neloth *sigh*

But he at least knows the story - I really don’t want to have to explain all this to those snotty mages in Winterhold!

Var’s not happy with me heading for Solstheim again, but I have to do it before I get much farther along in this pregnancy. Would that I could just send a courier to Neloth with a request for him to come here - but I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t get me anywhere. If he agrees to help me again, he’ll need to come here to see the site, and the stone anyway.

So, hmm. What could I offer as a bribe to just get him to come here to start with? Before I hare off to the island again I really ought to think this through a bit further. For one thing, I still have to move Edilla over there when the house is done. Of course, if all of it takes much longer, I’m not going to be doing anything with any of it before this babe is born!

I walked into the Hall at home, to see g’ma, ma, Edilla and Lendia in some sort of discussion. I thought I might not want to know. But since they’d already seen me....

“What’s to do, ladies of the Hall?”

“Oh, there you are!” G’ma grinned at me. “Well, a courier brought messages for you, and we weren’t really sure where you might be.”

She handed me two of the general run of single-folded sheets of paper with small wax seals. I broke the first one open, then looked to Edilla and smiled. “Well, your house is finished, and early! Which considering, is a very good thing.” A look of joy crossed her face and she smiled back at me.

My eyes near popped out of my head as I read the second missive, because it was from - of all people! - Neloth Telvanni. And as I read it over for the third time in as many minutes, I still couldn’t believe it. So I read it for the fourth time - aloud so all could hear.

“I am told that you have need of me in Skyrim. While this is extremely inconvenient to me, I am also told that it is something I will need to do. So. If you will send your ship to Raven Rock, I will embark on this idiocy. I expect to be met in Windhelm with a comfortable carriage, and conveyed to wherever I am needed the same way.

“Do not put this off too long or I will just refuse to leave my home. You are a very bothersome wench after all!

“Master Wizard Neloth Telvanni”

I had to shut my jaw forcibly. “By the phrasing, my princes are - um - masterminding this turn of events. It’s a good thing too.... because I was trying to figure out just how I was going to con him into coming here - when the sculptor finds his stone, it’s going to take a wizard to get it up to Paar’s Aerie.”

G’ma smiled as if she knew something I didn’t. Nothing new there! “Anyway, Edilla, once the sculptor finds his stone, I’ll take you to Solstheim and bring Neloth back.” She floated away, presumably to start packing! Lendia headed to the kitchen and Ma to her own house, leaving me with g’ma which was another good thing.

“Arngeir is putting off his trip to Sovngarde until the shrine is done. Then we’ll have to figure out how to get him up there, as that’s where he plans to finish his life.”

She sobered. “I was surprised to find him still alive, especially with Paar’s death. Not surprising that he wants to see the shrine before he goes onward. I might.... have some ideas about getting him up there....”

And she wouldn’t say another word no matter how nicely I asked! I’m not good at possessing my soul in patience!

Hee hee, even Neloth won't dare so no to the princes! And likely the challenge, not to mention the fame to his name and House, would give him as much pleasure as annoyance, LOL.
Now just what's in the minds of those Raven women, hmm? Wonderful Sere, love it. *hug*

127 - Beran found his stone

so we’re off to Solstheim, Edilla and I. I wondered how she was going to do sailing.... but she took it like an old hand. I asked eventually.

“Oh, I was born in Windhelm. My da had small boats for fishing, and since I was the only child, I helped him. I like this ship though! It’s big enough not to roll - which is what causes folk to have unsettled stomachs.”

Hmm. Lots of things no one knew about Edilla apparently!

Raven Rock was as unattractive and filled with ash as usual. Edilla looked around with big eyes, and I hastened to reassure her.

“Where your house is, and the shrine, the ash passes to the south. Your house is in a small glade, with trees and bushes. If there are things from home you think would grow here after you’ve lived here a while, I’ll be happy to bring them over. Now, we’ll take rooms at the inn overnight, and I don’t know if you noticed, but I brought a small cart in the big hold along with Vigilante. I’ll hitch him up in the morning, and we’ll drive up to the Peak and the house.”

In the morning, she was still looking with big eyes. And shopping. Apparently the Dunmer-style clothing was something she thought would work better than her heavier bulkier Nordic dresses, for she was soon outfitted with tunics and trous of the local type. I didn’t blame her a bit - I wasn’t any too fond of dresses myself!

The trip north was easy; Edilla seemed delighted with everything she saw. And when we finally drew up in the glade, with her house waiting for her, she fell into sobs.

“Thank you Tiercel Ravenwing, thank you! I will be happy here all my remaining days; now to hope pilgrims come!”

“Well, there’s enough folk in Raven Rock who know about all this that I think it’s pretty likely - in fact, you may have too many! If it turns out to be an issue, send to Aradil Arano in Raven Rock for some guards to keep order. He’s the second councilor; I’ll make sure he knows what’s toward.”

I stayed the night, then headed back to Raven Rock after showing Edilla up to the shrine. The new railings were in place, and she seemed to have as good a head for heights as stomach for the sea. And then I sent a courier to Master Wizard Neloth - who made me wait, cooling my heels, for four days.

And when he walked into the inn, the first thing he said was “With child?! How are you going to stand the ocean?”

I just told him to shut it. I was past that, it wasn’t going to be a problem.

I hoped.

LOL, of course he made her wait, the weasel. And good for Edilla, neat to see she loves it, and already making herself at home! :thumb: Love it Sis!

I'm curious to see how Arngeir will make up to the top....but I think I have an idea how. ;) All this Solstheim talk has me anxious to go there with Celia. One step at a time, though!

I enjoy Solstheim - as long as I'm not having to deal with Neloth.
