Ah, I like 'ol Durnhey. I wish there was a way to free him as part of the Soul Cairn quest. I thought she might have called Odahviing, though!

No - I am sure that Odahviing is dead. I thought of him first, but I couldn't make it work - so I figured that meant it needed to be the one dragon who might be considered immortal in a way....

132 - There are no words

Beran has outdone every sculptor in any age of Nirn. Akatosh rises in dark stone, wings outspread to the full, as if just at any moment ready to spring into the air. And somehow, I don’t know how, Beran had set Parr’s bones into the stone, to limn Akatosh’s skeleton.

I sobbed, it was so beautiful. And I wasn’t the only one - all of us but the twins and Neloth had tears flowing freely. Well, not Beran either, but I have no doubt he shed his own as he brought this glorious shrine to Talos and Akatosh to fruition.

Neloth seemed - bemused, whether at the shrine itself or at our tears, I had no way of knowing. Finally I collected myself enough to tell Beran that he was due a huge bonus for making this shrine so.... perfect. He just shook his head.

“Nay lady - I will take no more septims from you. This is the last work I will do - it is my life’s work. Now.... I will travel, and send people to these shrines you have set in the high places of Skyrim and Solstheim. The work you have done - well, there are people in need of it. I didn’t know myself how in need of this shrine I was, until I finished the statues and felt the blessings of Akatosh and Talos. And now.... I will go out into the world - to explain the shrines and the blessings, and your own benevolence. The world must hear how the Last Dragonborn’s granddaughter has honored Talos, Meridia, and Azura.”

So of course I was again a watering-pot! Beran just patted me on the shoulder and murmured wordlessly, while I wept and smiled at the same time.

Eventually, I turned to Arngeir, talking quietly with g’ma and Durnehviir. Dashing the remains of tears from my cheeks I finally managed to get coherent words out. “Master Arngeir, will you come to Hjaalmarch with us instead of going to your long-home, alone, here?”

He smiled - an expression which seemed to come more easily now than before. “Thank you, but no. Durnehviir and I are going to put our heads together. Before I see Sovngarde myself, I want to make sure this long-cursed dragon will see it too. When we have sorted it out, look for us against the sun and the moons - and after we will go to our long-home together.”

G’ma began to cry again. By this time I thought not only Neloth, but likely all the men, were heartily tired of tears and women! But except for the master wizard, the others seemed to be fine with sobs. At least each husband enfolded his wife, to give her a shoulder to soak!

Neloth muttered only “Hmph!”

Of course we did eventually manage to stop weeping. And I finally walked into the very center of the old word wall half-circle, to look at the Talos statue, of the same stone as Akatosh. It was done exceedingly well - without the dragon at the point of the sword. And with Talos looking out over Skyrim instead of down at the dragon he supposedly had killed. I found Var next to me, with both children.

I reached for Terlinna, but he shook his head, and handed me Vaerlon instead. “It is time to change things up in Skyrim. Both of us will teach our children.”

So we knelt, holding a child apiece, and gave our thanks to Talos and Akatosh for the world in which we lived. A golden warmth of benediction flowed over us, and reached all who stood with us in this place.

As dusk arrived, we decided just to sleep near the shrine. Var and I had brought bedrolls - forethought? Perhaps. G’ma and ma got those, and the rest of us made do with cloaks and the few blankets Beran had left. As good as his word, he was gone when we emerged from the glow of blessings. Morning would be soon enough to get back down the mountain.

I can see the shrine in my mind's eye, Sis, and it's magnificent, gave me goosebumps! Wish I could draw, I would give this a shot! Alas, no talent for that exists in me.

133 - Goodbye Neloth

In the morning, Neloth said calmly “Well, Verinne Ravenwing, I believe you’ve improved since I knew you. You might have passed on some of your intellect to your granddaughter though. And you, yes, you’ve done what you set out to do. I hope you don’t bother me ever again, wench. Now, farewell. Finally!”

He waved his hands - and was gone. Good riddance. I laughed, and g’ma grinned as well. After, we moved slowly down to High Hrothgar, and decided to rest there before going on. Arngeir had been flown back down there by Durnehviir, and greeted us.

“Please, use what you will of whatever you find here. I will be going to the place where he is bound with Durnehviir; we will try to find out how to break the curse - he tells me it is time for him to return there, to this Soul Cairn.”

G’ma looked at the old Greybeard, a very sober expression on her face. “Master, those who live are not accepted there without a gift of a soul to the Ideal Masters whose place it is. Or by becoming a vampire. And unless she has returned to her daughter and Castle Volkihar, the vampire Valerica is still there. Please, ask Durnehviir if you will be safe going there.”

“We have talked it over. I believe I can give the Masters something they will value, besides my soul - and of course, I have no wish to become a vampire! If it works, I will somehow let you know, in case - anyone - ever needs to follow me....”

I felt a chill chase down my spine. I don’t know why.... but that statement disturbed me greatly.

Eh. Me too. I'm just the scribe. So I get this "second-hand" as it were - and.... well, I suppose I'll find out. But I'm already pretty sure I'm not going to like it.

Thanks Sis!
