Wow. That kind of thing never happened to me - not even when I was married to the druggie (first husband). |

15 - Well, what do I do next? I watched and waited. Torvik was inside about an hour. When he came out again, he stopped and said something to whoever was still in the house. I couldn’t of course hear what was said. I had a couple of choices: first, I could wait until dark and try sneaking into my own home - but while I wasn’t bad at the stealthy side of things, it usually meant not being armed, and that could be a problem if the person inside found me; second, I could go jerk Torvik’s chain.... and I did quite like that thought.... But I thought I’d best go talk to everyone, and that “everyone” had better include Tovis this time. In fact, I decided I’d talk to Tovis myself first. But maybe I’d better have g’ma do it.... they’d known each other a long time. So I reversed my sneak path back the way I’d come, tightened the saddle girth, and mounting quickly, set out for home - all around the swamps again, so I wouldn’t be seen. As I rode into Morthal, I saw g’ma walking toward the gate. Hmm. So I pulled up and dismounted, falling into step with her. “Did you feel me coming?” She glanced sideways at me. “What would you say if I said yes?” “I’d say you were a Raven. Most of us see things some.... And since Idgrod died, we haven’t had a Seer.” She grinned. “Well, I’m not so facile as she was - but I did feel you coming. So - what’s toward?” I filled her in. She was sober, and chilled by the brazenness. “It’s time to talk to Tovis, you’re right about that. I think - it had better be me to begin with....” “That’s what I’d thought. I - don’t want him to have to know. But Torvik is definitely involved....” G’ma sighed. “Yes, I’m not happy about having to tell him. But better from me, and then we’ll have a meeting over dinner. Get on back to the Hall, tell Ger and whoever else is there, and then have Edilla expand dinner. She’ll probably fuss....” “It’s okay. She’s fussed at me for years, after all!” I kissed her cheek and headed first to the stable to groom my boy, and then to Highmoon Hall, where Edilla did fuss, but no worse than normal. I explained the whole thing to g’da, Uncle Hed and the boys, ma and da, and Melki. “Bordon will be along shortly” da said when I looked around. I started laying out place settings, got ale and wine, seasonings, and then went to the kitchen to do whatever Edilla needed done. Within an hour, dinner was ready, and g’ma walked in followed by a very disturbed-seeming Tovis. He kissed my cheek and I could see he was upset enough to be close to tears. “Tier, I...” “Tovis, leave off. It’s not your fault. We’ll eat, and then we’ll talk.” G’ma said quietly, “Come, sit. Break bread with us. It’s sorry I am that the only way to get you to my table is this!” He smiled a little at that. He was known for not wanting to bother the family; since his wife was dead, and his son at the mine, he kept a bachelor household - but he could certainly cook! I’d eaten with him a few times over the years, and he was at least as good a cook as Edilla was - the which I would not say ever! After dinner, we moved to the firepit for warmth and cheer, and I handed around more of whatever we were all drinking. “Well, I hate to have to mess up a good meal and drink with nasty facts.... but I’d better." I spent an hour laying it all out exactly as it happened, and what I’d seen and done right down to today, with Torvik’s visit to the Manor. The silence was thick enough to cut with a knife. |

16 - This is just damned awkward.... I ran a hand through my hair, and then rubbed my eyes. “Tovis, I’m going to have to confront Torvik. I would like to have your support, and if you want to be there, that’s fine too. I need to know what in the hells is going on, and at this point, I’d prefer to get it out in the open with Torvik, instead of trying to sneak into my own home with someone I don’t know living there - someone who probably already tried to kill me....” He held his goblet of wine between his hands; looking up from his apparent study of the wine, he nodded. “I’ll go along - and hope he doesn’t show up at the house tonight. I’m - no good at pretense you know....” Aye. I knew. He was transparent and open, and it would be easy enough for anyone who knew him to realize he was upset - and get out of him what he was upset about. Ma said “Tovis, why don’t you stay at our place tonight? If Torvik did stop by your house, he’d probably not think to look beyond the inn, and then go back to the mine.” So that was arranged, and it did make me a bit easier in mind. We’d need to get out to the mine first thing tomorrow - hopefully before the intruder in my house was up and around to see us. We all had another round of drink, and then went our separate ways to bed. I was staying with g’ma and g’da, using the one extra bed in the Hall. I was annoyed that I only had one set of gear - and it was in need of a good cleaning by this time. Well, it was what it was. I made sure to wash up thoroughly anyway. Tovis didn’t ride well, but in the interest of getting out to the mine as early as possible, he borrowed a stable hack. Both of us were very quiet - and the ride was completed in near total silence. We dismounted and tied the horses to the posts outside, then went up to the office. Tovis barred the door behind us, and I raised my eyebrows. Well, it was his son, after all - he could do as he thought right. Torvik looked up, seeming startled as we walked in. He opened his mouth to say something, but I spoke first. “I want to know who’s living in my home, why you’re walking into the back door as if you’re a welcome relative, and what you and whoever is there had to do with me being taken from Whiterun and dumped in a hole in Falkreath Hold. No - don’t say anything just yet. Think about it - and the fact that your father and my entire family know you’re somehow involved.” He turned a sickly pale shade, and started to shake all over. “Da....” Tovis shook his head, gritting his teeth on words he probably wanted to say. Finally he glared right through his son, and snarled “Tell us the truth or I’ll beat you within an inch of your life!” I didn’t know if that was effective as a threat or not, but Torvik looked away, and then back at his father, so perhaps it was. “He - he’ll kill me anyway once he knows I’ve said something. I... I knew him when I was in the Guard in Whiterun. I don’t think I’ve ever known his real name - he calls himself something different all the time. Right now he’s using the name Feldis Windstad. He said this whole property rightly belongs to him.... He - wanted you out of the way so he didn’t have to sue to get his property back he said. I don’t know any more than that, I swear!” Tovis seemed to be hanging on to temper - barely. “Go into town, stay inside the Hall, while we figure out what we’re going to do about this. No, you don’t have a choice. Do as you’re told, boy!” Torvik was gone in about half a minute - we watched to make sure he didn’t head for the Manor, but he seemed to be hurrying straight toward Morthal. Tovis rubbed his palms down his face. “Well, Tier.... now what?” I really hate it when my own words come back to haunt me.... |

Oh caught up, and it's not enough!! Sad to see the idiot let himself be used in such a way, and sad for his Father as well. This Feldis Winstad is a right piece of work just hearing about him. I look forward to Tier's next actions! *hug* Wonderful! |

The sins of the son shall be visited on the father... Wait, is that right? :) I tried to teach my children... and they became intimate with my favorite parenting quote "I brought you into this world, I can take you out of it!" :) |

17 - I need to talk to people in Whiterun about this man - I think? I’m not sure - but it seems as if I’d better haul Tovis and Torvik off to Whiterun, and have some chat with the guard captain and some of his older guards (the ones who might have been there when Torvik was in the guard). Now, what’s this perp going to do if his buddy Torvik’s not around at the mine? Don’t know, don’t necessarily care - maybe he’ll take himself off? Not too likely.... But I’d like to have some further information about him - not just what Torvik is telling me. I mean, I trust Tovis with my life - but not his son any more.... as who can blame me? So that’s what we’ll do. I went to Tovis first, finding him at home, cooking something that smelled wonderful. “Is Torvik here, or still at the Hall?” “He’s here, the gormless fool” he growled. “Sleeping I guess....” So I laid out for him what I wanted to do. And he had a better idea. “You take my ass of a son with you, and I’ll take over at the mine. You’ll have Tor to talk to whatever of his cronies are still with the guard in Whiterun, and I’ll have no reason to truck with that git who’s pretending to be a Windstad.” “Do you know anything about the Windstads, Tovis? I mean, there had to be some, once....” “Not enough to help. There was a Captain Windstad when I was a boy - he built a shipping concern - that’s where all those old wood bridges across areas of the marshes came from. He also built a huge ship, and was heading for Morrowind - and was never heard from again. His son was the one who opened the mine, if I recall right. And that was when I took to adventuring to make a living rather than stay in Morthal to get beaten to death by my own dad because I wouldn’t join the rebellion.” I knew that was a really sore spot for Tovis; poor man, nothing really had been easy for him until g’ma hired him to run the mine, and he’d had a lot of good years back in Morthal, and at the mine. But now.... his own son was putting him at risk. I was sorry I had to bring this to him. He looked at me, and quirked a smile. “Oh, I know you’re thinking you’ve just turned my life on its head - but that’s not on you, Tier! And I will be part of fixing this - since my son seems to be deep involved....” Well, if it were my son, I’d have killed him twice already, so I did understand how he felt. “All right then. If you’ll go wake Torvik, I’ll get my horse saddled, and hire the carriage. Um. What are you cooking?” He grinned - a real one this time. “It’s your favorite of course - tender beef tips in red wine with garlic, potatoes, onion, and tomatoes. And you’ll have a bowl now, and take some with you too!” So I ate - damn the man could cook! I stuffed my face, accepted some bread and a crock of the stew to take along - and it wasn’t really enough for Torvik too.... Well, I supposed he’d figure something out - I wasn’t going to share! The trip to Whiterun was uneventful for the first couple of days. Torvik sulked, and I talked to him only when forced. Bordag, the carriage driver, seemed to have plenty to say to me, but absolutely nothing to Torvik. The second night out, after Torvik was snoring, I asked him about that. “Eh, miss. Yon git” a wave over his shoulder to where Torvik was rolled under the carriage, “he’s bad clear through. His da’s a good man, always was, but the boy got his grandda’s temper and his aunt’s sloth. He’s a lazy good for naught. Ye want ta beware o’ him, ye do.” So I rolled into my own bed with sobering thoughts. If Bordag knew so much about the Horansons, well.... I would bet that the Whiterun guards wouldn’t be happy to see Torvik - and might not care to talk to me.... Grumbling under my breath, I settled to sleep. Torvik was gone in the morning. Thanks Kane! It's really funny - this is the first "relative" who's shown up to poke me. I was making a Nord, planned her name and what she would be doing, and all of a sudden I was naming her Tiercel Ravenwing, and making her Veri's granddaughter. I played her a bit, and that night I had these dreams.... Very strange, even for me! |
