21 - Unfortunately, he’s more like a badger in its holt....

....and unless there’s a “back door”, I’m not sure how we’ll gig him out. So that was my next question. “Did any of you know that there was a back way out of Windstad? Because that’s how he got out with Tovis.”

Head-shaking all around. G’ma said “Tovis probably did, as many years as he was there. And Torvik too - probably how this Windstad or whoever he is found it out.”

I nodded. That made all too much sense. “Well then.... I wonder if there might be something similar out at Stonehills? Because it would make perfect sense for this character to use the same setup as long as it works....”

Da, thinking hard, finally said “I don’t know of one - but that doesn’t mean Windstad couldn’t have made one. I wonder how long he’s been setting this up....”

Well, I wondered that too. “Let’s see if I can get anything out of Torvik about it. It would be better not to go wandering around there if we can avoid it. Right now, I need food and sleep, and I know the rest of you do too. I’ll talk to him in the morning.” I headed for the kitchen to find something to fill my growling belly, and then took myself off to bed. I can’t say I slept very well though.

After morning meal, I headed to the jail cell to try getting something out of Torvik. He glared at me as I stopped outside the cell.

“It’s a bit of an outrage that you seem to be angry with me, Torvik. After all, I’m the one who was harmed to begin with - and three of the miners are dead due to whatever your good friend used on them.”

He paled, and gulped loudly. “He - he said it was harmless!”

“Well, it wasn’t. And in case you weren’t aware, he’s taken your da over to Stonehills - tied up tight.”

At that, he slumped to the cot and dropped his head in his hands. “How did this all go so wrong? He - he said we wouldn’t be hurting anyone, he just wanted to....” He swallowed hard, and clamped his mouth shut.

“He just wanted to what, Torvik? You wouldn’t be hurting anyone? Right. I nearly died. Three miners did die. And your da could be dead too. I think you’d better give over the whole of it. We might decide to hang you as an accomplice you know.”

He started to shake, and tears ran down his cheeks. “I didn’t know he’d taken you until he’d already dumped you. And he wouldn’t tell me where.... But if I tell you what I know, he’ll kill me!”

“Torvik, if you don’t tell me what you know, WE will kill you. You’re dead no matter what, you see. If you want to save your father, you’d better start talking - and fast!” Yes, I was bluffing a bit - but I could tell he didn’t know that. I was much better at cold fury than most were....

“I - I’ll tell you. But I want out of this cell while I do - I want to talk to everyone...”

“You’ll have to be bound then. Hands and feet - we’re not going to let you run.”

His chin trembled. But he nodded assent. “I’ll send the boys down to fetch you. They’ll feed you first before they tie you and bring you out.” I wheeled and went back out to the family to explain. Da sent Geran and the cousins to deal with Torvik, including taking him a meal. And then we sat and waited.

Heh.... yep. Well, sorry - but it is what it is. I'm getting this in dribbles myself - back to dreaming parts of it. And it's very interesting that my "dreamt Skyrim" is - even bleaker than the original game.... Yes, there are bright spots on the tundra.... but man, up near Morthal and Windstad....

It's killingly dismal.

Thanks sis!

22 - I think maybe “snake” is a better fit?

I told them all what I was thinking when it came to what to do with Torvik. After we’d rescued Tovis and dealt with Windstad of course - until then, Torvik would sit in the jail cell. There were nods all around. Da grinned, and said he’d think of a song about it. I rolled my eyes at him. About that point g’da walked in.

“Well, Vartain’s no help. But at least they’re all on notice of the problem. That boy can’t find his rear end....” He bit off the end as g’ma glared at him. “It’s true enough” he grumbled at her.

“I don’t care what’s true. That’s no way to talk.” She filled him in on what was going on now.

The boys hauled Torvik out into the room, carrying him head and foot since he was tightly bound. At least I hoped tightly - sometimes they couldn’t be trusted to do things right.... They dumped him on the floor in the middle of all of us.

“All right - spin your tale, Torvik. The truth. Start at the beginning.”

He shook his head. “I - don’t know the beginning. I met Fel when he joined up in Whiterun. He was using a different name then. I came back here to take over at the mine, and yah, I told him where I was going, where to find me. But that was years back....

“Then just a moon back, he showed up at the mine, saying he was using his real name now. I thought it was strange he was a Windstad - didn’t know there were any left. He stayed a while, then said he had some things to see to, and was going into Morthal to get the carriage. I - think - that might have been right after you left the last time....”

His voice faded away as I locked my eyes on him. “So, you were giving this ‘old friend’ information about my comings and goings? Why?

Torvik swallowed hard. “It’s what he said he came for - that the property and mine were his as the last of the Windstads, and he needed me to keep track of you all while he got his papers together to prove who he was.”

Da growled and glowered. “So you just believed such an asinine tale? Of someone you knew only as a guard in Whiterun, under another name? Can’t believe your Da bred such a git.” G’ma shushed him down, and motioned for Torvik to continue.

“When he came back, he moved into the Manor. I - asked if the papers were the proof you needed since he was living there now, and.... and he told me about taking Tier out of the inn in Whiterun and dumping her somewhere to die. He said - if I told any of you, he’d kill me, and then the rest of you.”

“Really. You thought he could kill a dozen men, including the guards once they knew what was happening? Really? Where’s your mind been lately? Did he pay you? Were you supposed to keep the mine going for him? What else?”

He shook his head. “We - hadn’t talked about that. When you saw me at the Manor, I’d gone to find out what he had planned to do next - and tell him you’d showed up at the mine. He.... he was furious that you’d not died. He said he’d have to think of something else. And he told me to stay at the mine like normal. Then he had the stuff to use on the miners - he said that should bring you all running. I - don’t know what he thought when he got there and I was gone, and Da was there....”

I contemplated the worm. “That’s enough to go on with. Now. You WILL answer this question. Truthfully. Is there a back door out of Stonehills like there is out of Windstad?”

Torvik went pale. “H-how did you know about...?”

“That’s how Windstad got Tovis out of the mine unseen - except by me. Stonehills? Answer me!”

“Yes. All right. Yes, there’s a back way. Windstad took over that settlement and mine a while back, brought in his own crew, and had them make a back exit.”

G’da snarled, “What did that piece of excrement do with our folk, the miners and their families? And you better tell the truth, because right about now, I’m for hauling you up to the executioner at Solitude.”

He shook all over. “I - I don’t know! He didn’t tell me! I didn’t really know any of them, so I don’t know if I’ve seen them around.”

“Well, we know them, and they aren’t here. So I guess we’ll assume he killed them. So you’re bidding fair to being an accomplice. Here’s what’s going to happen to you.” I drilled holes through his brain with my eyes, sending him cringing away from me.

“While we clean up this mess, get your Da free, and deal with Windstad, you’re going to live here in this jail. You’ll be fed, and that’s an end of it. Don’t even think about trying to get out, because if you manage it, you’ll be dead before you hit the gate. I guarantee it.”

I looked around at my grim-faced family. “Anyone have any other questions for this idiot?” Head-shakings all around. “Fine. Back to the cell with him, and make sure to bring all the keys out with you. Don’t get too close to him, just close enough to untie him - and two of you hold him while that happens. Oh, and double-check he hasn’t got any weapons on him....”

I waited until they were back, then sighed and said “I think we’d better see what we can find out about the back door into Stonehills. And I surely would like to know who this prat really is....”

23 - Interlude

Why is she still alive? She should be DEAD. She’s nothing but a wealthy brat - she never even looked at me.... And that family of hers - all but hagravens they are. And why do I have nothing but incompetents working for me?

Oh, I will have my revenge, I will. And an extra pound of flesh from her, for my family. Yes.... my family. Those hags, those ravens.... they have usurped my family’s home. And she will be the first to pay....

ROFL! Well, tell the truth, I never ask questions to which I don't want the answers. And goddess forfend people ask ME that sort of question - because.... well, I ALWAYS answer truthfully. Most people I know have already figured that out. Those that haven't - well.... eventually they'll - get - it.... Unless they're totally stupid (yeah, some of them might be in that category....)

[Um. Of course, there's my brother. He's Donald Trump Jr. Better looking, not quite as wealthy (yet) - and just as much an idiot. No, he doesn't get a pass because he's my brother. I don't like him, never have, never going to. And no, I don't love him just because we share a gene-pool. The sooner he and his ilk are gone the happier I will be.]

When I was in the Navy.. a co-workers wife decided to open a dress shop for.. odd sized people.. IE she was a damned good seamstress...and could fit a dress in no time.. I helped her out in the weekends I had off.. well.. umm good bad..

Lady walks in.. Blonde, Blue.. florid complexion.. a tall curvy sized 14 .. tried this skin-tight pleated red silk dress on.. and asked me how it looked on her.. I gave her a quick look over.. thought about how much I really liked my co-workers wife.. and didn't say what was in my head [ "Like you have two pig's fighting in a burlap sack inside a silk sleeve"] Instead I hedged my bet's with in my best southern drawl "Sweetie red is just Naught ya colure.. it make's ya look like ya gotta fever, but cummon with me, See this hear Blue dress, perfect complement to her blue eye's and the style would show off ya ample cleavage to perfection!"

Seriously... The blue was two shades short of Mid-night.. and had a scooped neckline.. and a draped back.. perfect for her figure.. the red.. bean-pole dress.

I did once tell my brother's girl-friend that her bikini bottom's made her ass look two sizes bigger.. it did.. wrong style for her figure... Course I once asked my brother if he picked up his girl-friends at Eckard Drugs.. in the Pharmacy line.. beautiful fruit-cakes... couple of them crazier than a loon.
