As she passed Mixwater Mill, Saahni moved soundlessly along the road leading to Whiterun. She wasn't actually trying to be silent or sneaky, it was just force of habit combined with her nature that made her steps soft in the deep darkness of the night.

While she walked, her mind drifted to recent events at Witchmist Grove. She had been forced to kill Moira, a Hagraven that she had apparently somehow become engaged to marry, and her mind was filled with wonder and questions at how such things could happen.

How does one become so drunk as to end up engaged to a Hagraven? Why did the creature attack her instead of just giving her the ring back? Did the hagraven really think she could win the battle with Saahni, or was she slain by her broken heart? Do Hagravens really even HAVE hearts that break?

After a short time, Saahni heard a voice from her left call out in the night.

"Ho, Traveler! Over here, we need your help!"

The voice came from somewhere near the cliff on Saahni's left that looked down on the river, and the Khajiit instinctively stopped and dropped into a crouch. Quietly she drew her bow and nocked an arrow as she studied those who called her. The Khajiit could see three figures standing on the rocky ground, but something did not look right. Perhaps... Wait! Was that a naked body laying on the rocks? Oh, and another one not far away on the other side of those who were standing. The figures in the dark did not seem to be trying to render aid to those who were down, but stood staring towards Saahni in the dark. They acted as if they could see her, but she thought that was impossible for ordinary humans in the complete darkness.

As she moved closer, Saahni could see that the eyes of the trio seemed strange, and their faces were odd, even for humans. The hair on her neck stood on end as she realized they were vampires!

She loosed her arrow at the nearest figure, and leaped to her left, dropping down the rocky face of the cliff to a ledge not far below. A vampire cried out in rage, and cast a spell at her, but it was too late to harm her.

A pale face looked over the edge of the cliff top at her, and she put an arrow in the dead flesh of its forehead as she moved backwards and dropped into the water below. A nude female that Saahni recognized as having been one of the dead bodies moaned with rage, and dropped over the edge of the cliff. With a splash and a frighteningly undead cry, she fell into the water a short distance upstream.

Saahni swam with the current downstream for a short way, then made her way to the far shore. She shot several arrows into the zombie, and was soon rewarded by seeing it turn into a pile of glowing ash, but two of the three vampires had somehow crossed the river and were feeding off of her by spell from a short distance away.

Diving back into the water, the Khajiit swiftly swam back to other side of the river, then turned and managed to kill one of the vampires with a few arrows. The other two had quickly vanished, running away into the night.

Saahni backed away, and moved upriver alongside the mill, as she waited for some sign of the vampires. So intent was she on spotting the vampires, that she didn't hear the wolf as he moved within lunging distance and attacked her with snarling, snapping teeth.

Rolling away from the wolf, she drew axe and dagger, and soon the wolf was dead... but no more had he died than he arose from the dead and again attacked her. The wounds, and the fur already matted with his blood gave the wolf a ghastley appearance as seen with the Khajiit nighteye. Soon, the gashes looked much worse, and the wolf's head lolled loosely, being held on by a mere flap of skin as he too turned to ash.

Whirling, the Khajiit sent an arrow flying into the darkness and was rewarded with a screech of pain and hatred as the missile struck home. Again the vampire fled, but this time he fled into the gray light of a new dawn... but Saahni felt a new weakness as the light of day touched her.

Saahni knew she had to find a priest or a healing potion quickly, so she broke into a rapid lope toward Whiterun leaving the reamianing vampires to find their own fate...

Holy SHIT, neil.... My heart's still jumping into my throat! Wow.... Oh gods I hope it's not too late for her.... (well, unless you want it to wind up that way....)

[And allow me to laugh at unexpected congruences: I just finished the chapter in Harry Potter 2, where they've been to Nearly Headless Nick's deathday party.... "being held by a mere flap of skin" is just all too apt here!]
