I looked everywhere... In the freezer, under the mattress, even in the closet, but I couldn't find a thread dedicated to competition video. So I made one, put in comfortable chairs, a snack bar, Anyway, for you poor unfortunates who may remember that I was talking about voicing a video the other day, here is my first voiced competition Video. I call it " It's a bit longish, about 19 minutes, but I couldn't fit "War and Peace" into 3 minutes either... ;) |

Was tough to hear your narration. Got better later, but was very quiet. Love the "jackass!!!" heeheehee! |

Yeah, I'm having some issues working that out. My new mic is a "Blue Snowball" and it picks up everything. I fear the day when my neighbors have sex... Anyway, when I try to remove the odd noises, it makes the whole thing very quiet, and then I have to try to amplify it again, and it gets difficult from there to find a point that can be heard without deafening everyone. Hopefully, I'll get better at it. |

Mic placement is the key. For voice, you want it as close as is practical to your mouth, but not so close that it picks up "wind noise" from your breath. You can also try making it more "directional" by placing something behind it, to screen background noise and reflect your voice to it. |

I've got most of that covered... although I don't have the mic close to my mouth. It's actually sitting on a footstool beneath my desk. The initial volume is not a problem at all though. the mic has built-in wind screen that eliinates a good portion of breath noise, or it would if I didn't wheeze like some poorly constructed bellows. Fortunately, eliminating the wheeze from the end product is relatively simple. The mic connects by USB, but only has four foot cord... When it's attached from under the desk, with two layers of wood and nearly the full four feet away from my computer, it still picks up fan noise from the computer (even though the computer runs more or less quietly). It's when I try to get rid of that hum of the fans that I run into problems. So, I use software that allows for filtered removal of noise, and it actually does remove the hum. the problem is that it reduces voice by about 35% at the same time. Then I have to amplify the voice portion, and it's very difficult to get the end volume to a reasonable level once it's taken to the video editor. You see, the voice that I hear from the video editor is fine, but once the video is converted to MP4 and uploaded to Youtube, it becomes muffled to some extent somewhere along the way. That means I have no realistic way to determine the final volume that will heard in the video. All I can do is set the volume to something painfully high and hope that it is reduced enough to make it bearable. |

Not knowing a dang thing about it I am wondering can you do everything as you currently are and then amp up your voice volume by 30% prior to conversion to mp4? |

Mic placement is the most important part. Get the mic closer to your mouth, and your voice will be proportionately louder to it than the other noise. Then you can record at a lower volume, and pick up even less noise. :) |

That's next on my list of things to try. glargg: With the mic closer to my mouth, there are two issues. One, the computer noise is louder and harder to eliminate because it doesn't have layers of desk filtering it out, and the wheeze of my breathing also becomes more persistent. EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have not found a way to alter the recording volume, except at playback. The more ambient noise that is picked up, the more I have to use the noise reduction feature which puts the volume right back down to where it is now... Honestly, you wouldn't believe the volume of the voice as it is when it's first recorded. It inflicts physical pain. Edited by neildarkstar, Apr 29 2017, 02:15 PM.

Still working on getting the voicing worked out. I tried speaking directly into the mic at a short distance, but it didn't seem to change anything. What seems to be working best is editing the video, saving it as an MP4, then adding the music track and saving, then adding the voicing. It's still not wonderful, but it's a lot better. I think the base of the problem has something to do with Movie Maker and my sound card. Anyway, here's the latest video, in which Tubasha pays Fort Greenwall a visit. (About 5 minutes) The voicing should be audible, although it seems to have some sharp corners... :) |

Nice fights neil......since we don't go with Hadvar....it was illuminating to hear the slightly different dialogue. Other than your different dialogue of course ;) Your FONV vid was using audacity.....this sounds like similar effect. I am betting face to face you have a deep Hollywood voice with a slight rasp.....c'mon you can tell me :) Did you ever see Tim Allen's series years back where he hosted a diy tool channel called tool time tim....part of his comedy show...loved that. Anyway tim had a mysterious neighbour we knew just as "Wilson" He spoke to Tim over the tall garden fence. All we ever saw of Wilson was his eyes and hat.... Wilson was full of tales and wisdom through anecdotes and one liners. Always wanted to see the real, enigmatic Wilson....nope...eyes n'hat is all we were allowed to see....in fact the show writers had a ball teasing us viewers with moments when we thought he was going go be seen, but always some "coincidence" blocked the view. :) |

Face to face, my voice isn't all that deep, but it does have a slight rasp. I've been told I sound something vaguely like a cross between older Clint Eastwood and (also older) Leonard Cohen. The hardest thing to get past is my Pacific Northwestern accent and a tendency to drawl Texas style... at the same time. :D Yes, the FONV was done with Audacity, as are the vids I've done most recently... except that ARWizard also has a part in the process. I remember Wilson well... He's been one of my favorite sit-com supporting characters for many years. :) |

So the question on everyones lips is......are we going to get to hear the real neil? Or like Wilson...are you going to hide the real deal? :D (I don't wanna get past your pacific northwestern accent with its slight drawl......I wanna hear it. I like accents.) Buuuuuuut s'up to you 'natch. I am gonna find out how to record sound onto my Xbox clips....it will be a giggle....but no....I can't do Adella justice :) Edited by Rick, May 2 2017, 06:56 AM.

Okay, but... Remember, you asked for it, and I didn't say it was exactly like anybody. Just sorta kinda according to some people who know me. :D My Mule BTW, the voice has not been processed or altered in any way. |

Well Clint, er' neil......you have a perfectly fine voice for narration, not in the least unpleasant, easy on the ear and very clear. I strongly recommend you seriously consider using just your natural voice for video narration.....leave Cartman to South Park eh! |

You asked for it Lapuaboy... :) Tubasha was informed of a Word of Power either by the Graybeards or by a letter from "A Friend", so she went after it. All she wanted was to visit their Wall, but the mages acted like she was stealing their robes or something... Sunderstone Gorge |
