This needs to go elsewhere - sorry for the derail. I'll try to post a definitive précis tomorrow. I actually didn't pay any attention to what topic this was, my apologies.

Hunh! Learn something new every day... :D

I doubt that I'll ever use that though. Unless I'm in total darkness or something and desperate.

In any case, I DO play for thrills, in the same way that I've lived my life in reality. I have no understanding of a Skyrim without danger, and honestly, no real desire to understand. I enjoy things too much as they are.

Are we talking about the fact that the crosshairs somewhat compensate for arrow arc on a medium-range shot? That's sort of an "auto-aim," but it only works for mid-range shots. Long shots have to be aimed high, and with some windage, and short-range shots have to be aimed slightly low to be accurate (but then they hit the ground if you're crouching in third person.)
I've accidentally just tapped the left mouse key a few times, but the target has never been hit that I can recall. In fact, I watch the arrow go outward for a few feet and fall to the ground like the bow hadn't been completely drawn or something.

Yeah, I just loaded up Skyrim and tried to get some kind of auto-target to work. If you just left-click with a bow in your hand, you'll just weakly shoot an arrow into the ground right in front of you.

To shoot a bow in Skyrim, I have to draw the bow fully and aim (crosshairs) at the target. There's no AI targeting.

Ha ha....oh gosh!

I want to input here....but but but.....y'all KNOW what I would say....so kinda pointless.

Nutshell....take most of glargg....all of neil.....times by 3 and shake hard. ;)

There....the shortest Rick answer in history....chuckle

Edit.
Quick thought...is auto aim 'toggle on' somewhere like in the settings menu?
Not that I would even consider using cheat systems...learning to bow aim, without crosshair, in third person is a player skill I cherish <nods>

Two possibilities: either it's something added by Nock2Tip (don't know, the "docs" on that aren't real helpful), or its something that only happens in mounted combat (possible, since that's how my girls generally kill things like wolves, bear, bandits, etc) - in other words, close combat.

When my girls use stealth to kill from range, yes, they draw the bow fully and aim with the crosshair accounting for uphill, downhill or level ground.

I don't think it's vanilla. cause I've shot more horses in the head than I care to comment on... when switching from RDR...which does have auto-targeting.. I don't have an issue with swtiching from x-box 1 to PC, because I use the same controller ( type).

Makes sense that an archery mod would add it, targeting on horseback.. is not easy, but can be done.. specially with the way the controls work..

It's definitely related to a mod. There's no "auto-target" in Skyrim.

There is a bit of vertical arc-compensation built into the aiming reticle. It seems to be "crosshairs on target" for mid-long shots, but the reticle is low for very long shots and high for very short shots.

For an example, I can reliably shoot from the "first" Valtheim tower archer's perch, and hit the boss who is standing on top of the other tower. But in order to do it, I have to aim about "6 feet" above his head, and about "2 feet" right of him. Aiming that way, high and slightly right, I can hit him every time, even though he is standing behind a post.

There is also a slight "auto-correct" where the game will alter the horizontal path of an arrow, after it's released. There's a "magnetism" setting that can be added to the INI to affect this. You usually only see this effect if there are two potential targets close together, and the game decides to hit the one you're not aiming at. I've seen it happen when I was trying to shoot one of those hanging fire-pots, and the game insisted on hitting a draugr who was beyond it.

But in no case will an arrow travel to a target without the bow being fully drawn and aimed.

More poweful bows give the arrows greater loft, so you aim lower than the same shot with a weak bow.

Although I don't use the crosshairs in third person....We automatically get the central eye aiming reticule in sneak mode....this is useful for precision shooting, such as when a foe is mostly obscured by cover.

Worth a mention.....maybe because its "tutorial" but when you assist the Companions to kill that giant at game start...even a clear miss gives the "ba'dum" bonus hit and archery skill level increased notification. I swear I have seen (Adella's) arrows fly totally past his head and still register a hit!

Probably bounces off his rock-hard skull! ;) Yeah, I think that's an example of what I was referring to, with the game trying to register a hit on what it "thinks" you're trying to shoot at.

And I have never, ever, had a level-up from putting an arrow or two into that giant. :)

On the more powerful bows...yes, but the principle is the same. The bow shoots right on the reticle (if you use it) for medium shots, and then requires adjustment up or down for shots outside that "ideal" range. And the further out you are shooting, the more there's a left-to-right error that must be compensated for.

And the deviation from the reticle seems to be different between regular bows and crossbows, too.

I play a lot of sneaky-snipey characters. :)

There's few things more satisfying than leading a target and loosing a perfectly placed arrow from really far out. I always find that challenge endearing, especially when approaching Ft. Greenwall from Shor's Stone.

In the meantime, we have a new FO4 competition running, and of all things, I've decided to post a video in the competition video thread! How about that?!? :)

This particular video is just the opening scenes of creating a FO4 character, here only to set the stage for the more adventurous videos that will hopefully follow.

You may find this particular video a bit dull, or perhaps a bit unsettling, depending on how you view things, because it is the same experience that every character goes through, but with tiny differences. As things progress through following videos, you may find clues that illustrate the true nature of Ms Holly Wood... or not...

*giggling* Yeah, stepson's wife never in the early lives of either of their two kids got out of the house with anything for them - no diapers, no bottles, no toys....

Heh, it's a little weird... The Player Character can't grab anything at all until a point in the vault when he/she is on the way out of the place.Good thing the Player never has to grab the kid, eh? :)

This is kind of like a Part 2 of the last video, but this one is considerably longer so if you have limited data it might be something you want to think about. This video picks up where the other one left off. While I won't guarantee how exciting this one is, I WILL say this. I had never lost a character while inside the tutorial vault... This time though was different.

When I said her skills were rusty, what I really meant to say was that she at least didn't quite shoot herself in the foot. :)

Behavioral cues are more obvious now, and I'll be interested to see who (if anyone) is first to make the leap to figure out just what the heck I'm talking about.

Without further ado, here's the video.

For those with the bandwidth and an hour to kill, here is the longest video I've ever made. :D

I'm editing in a normal URL link because it seems some folk can't see embedded links.

Just as an FYI, the real reason it's so long is that is extremely lightly edited. All I really took out was trips to sell/dump Holly's loot. I wanted to leave it intact to show how Survival effects a character during combat, as well of course as showing my own favorite playstyle in a "this is how I like it" sort of scenario... :)
