MY momma always said "Life is like a box of chocolates... You try to sneak something out of the box, and next thing you know you're face, hands, and clothes are covered in a big chocolate mess and everybody knows what you done then, and if I EVER catch you doing that to my chocolates again you won't LIVE to get the dental implants you're going to need. Are we clear?" |

Happy Anniversary! Good luck with the van. I know how it is. When I get in my truck (1997 Ford) I feel like I have to hold my mouth a certain way and whisper some magic words before I turn the key, just in case that will help it start. :) |

We're not far off, vehicle wise, glargg. My headache is a 2000 Ford Windstar. |

Ah, the Windstar. One of Ford's, uh, ideas. My truck is old, but everything still works fine. It's just that old diesels develop glow plug issues, and I'm not eager to do that repair. |

It could be worse. In the olden days before glow plugs and modern electrical systems, diesels had to be started with hand-cranked gasoline "pony motors." |

Ex-Father in law... restored old Farm tractors... had one you stuck a shot-gun shell in to start.... now that was a blast. 《Snicker 》 |

Some of the old diesels took an hour or more of being turned over by a pony motor before they would start. It was considered a normal part of the starting procedure, especially in cold weather. |

I knew a guy who had bought one of the early diesel Cadillacs. He paid about a fortune for the thing, but then he ran it out of fuel and never could get it to start again. He sold it for $50 bucks... |

Those late 70s/early 80s GM "diesels" were probably the worst car engines ever built. They had inadequate head bolts, so they kept blowing head gaskets. They didn't have proper water-separators, so naturally they got water in the fuel. I think those engines are responsible for Americans' attitudes about diesels even today. In truth, a proper diesel is just as reliable as a gas engine, is far more efficient, and will last twice as long. |

They are actually more reliable than petrol engines. Most engine rough running and start failures are ignition related....something diesels do not suffer from. Only down side is if a diesel does go wrong.....big bucks. Glow plugs average 30 bucks a pop, injectors 250 bucks a pop and the high pressure pump 600 bucks for a recon unit. A new turbo can be a grand. That's parts only costs not a garage's repair job costs..... Reliability tho'....well diesels in big, quality cars, like Mercs can trundle on for a third of a million miles....that's like 30 years of mr average driving around. In fact the rest of the car is likely to be BER before the engine. Modern small car diesels are now quite sporty with lighter than hitherto flywheels, and power outputs not far behind the same capacity petrol units. A far cry from the 70s when diesel cars sounded like tractors and were about as fast. Diesel smoke emissions are much improved, but they are still much dirtier than petrol. |

We had the glow plugs replaced twice in the 95 F250; it was around $2k total both times. |

$2000 sounds about right. Or about $1200 if you do it yourself, which on my truck involves removing the turbocharger and header pipes to get them out of the way. That's why I have a finger-crossing routine instead. :) |

Eh, we have a dealership. We don't DO truck crap. Last car repair I ever did was on my 72 240Z - rebuilt the carbs. That was.... um.... about 1980. |

Here is Dwemsey's tally. She's pretty much a poster girl for my OCD tendencies. I had fun (hey it's Skyrim!) but the realization that by far the biggest danger to her was ME (falling damage) and not the baddies was a bit of a reality check :$ level 46, 58.43 hours Locations cleared Spoiler: click to toggle 26 locations= 26000pts Artifacts and critters killed Spoiler: click to toggle Total Points 53,590 Her Skills Spoiler: click to toggle

Nicely done Lapuaboy! I don't see how you got through all those dungeons in that amount of time. My new character has over 30 hours in already and only has about 5 Dwemer ruins done. I guess I'm just slow, eh? :) Anyway, regarding the danger thing, that's why I greatly prefer competitions that have restricted crafting. Of course that's a debate that rages constantly around here, as I'm sure you are aware... For me, it's just not fun if the foes aren't deadly, so I go to lengths to avoid that OP feeling. The down side of that is that I go through a lot of DiD characters, and there are many things in Skyrim I've never done even with over 6,500 hours spent in-game. |
