I my skill set more or less settled on. My character will be sporting Dwemer armor and weapons, once he can grab the armor from Nchuand-Zel. I had planned on playing as a Breton, for MR and Dragonskin. Given the locations we will be exploring, that is less important. Imperial will have a stronger skill set, so I'm reconsidering. Probably going with a left for dead start.

One of the things that is a "disadvantage" with the "Classic Classes" mod is that, if you don't take Smithing as a class skill, you can barely do anything with it at all. With Smithing at 5, you can't make armor or weapons, and you can't improve anything. You can make house stuff like nails and fittings, and you can make jewelry, so you can gradually get the skill high enough to work normally.

I would guess that Rick/Adella are dealing with this same problem with the 0-skill challenge.
Yes,
Fwiw and fyi (for those who don't know)....the threshold for being able to improve iron gear is......Smithing Skill of 14.

Quickest way to get there is make a crapton of iron arrows.....about 80 iron ingots worth...or 2000 arrows. Then save them for later....cos when speech gets high enough and with haggling apparal/potions those arrows become worth 1 shiny gold Septim each...i.e. 2 grand.

So if you are patient you get a great rate of return on your iron ingot investment.

Hope that helps :)

I decided to save the iron arrows on one of my characters once. By the time I decided to 'clean house', I had to go to 3 different vendors to get rid of them all, and that was after buying a couple ebony ingots! Had close to 4000 over a long period of time. Never made any though, just saved them when I found them. (some stuck in various body parts! ) :D

edit: sorry, need coffee. Darn typos.

Always found it slightly badass that I (or the enemy) can get hit by that ebony arrow, pull it out of the hole it made and fire it right back at whoever fired it in the first place.

I'm still deciding between my archer and my dual wielder I'm testing now. My sneak archer Tracy Gene was my first primary archers (no melee) in a long time, and I was slightly shocked at how she progressed. She is very powerful and tough, but I miss that up close and personal touch that melee provides. Dual wielding is a nice change, and I love a well "executed" DW power attack. I'll decide which to run pretty soon ;)

Horatio has inspired a new technique. He likes to take out nuisance low-danger enemies with his fists, and sometimes goes with a shield in his left hand and punches with his right. When something really nasty comes at him, he can switch to the big warhammer.

In other words, he uses both a two-hander and a shield. So Volendrung and Spellbreaker are both desirable.

He wears heavy armor, so he'll do the Fists of Steel perk, and go after those pugilist gauntlets for the enchantment.

The idea is to level slowly.

Hey, Horatio is old. He does everything slowly. :)

I don't know about that being a new technique though... I've been using a shield with an unarmed right hand for a long time. Although, it's usually just with Khajiit...

I may blow any such like strategy of leveling slowly though. I HATE playing on Novice. No matter what I fight, I always feel like I'm spamming my skills against a helpless opponent.

Yeah it's driving me nutty to play on Novice.... but I know some of the skills will rise fast enough to get to at least Apprentice pretty quick..

I.... don't think I've ever played on novice.
It's for the kiddies who want to feel like the overpowering destroyer or something, and then they can say how took out this or that baddie and all of his buddies without breaking a sweat.

What I hate about it is that there is ZERO challenge to anything. You know the giant that the companions are fighting when you first go to Whiterun? You absolutely CANNOT run fast enough to get into that fight, because the giant dies before you ever get close... Then you have to listen to Aela bitch you out because a REAL warrior would have relished fighting a giant...

If you have a companion of any sort, you likely NEVER fight anything in the entire game unless you just say ENOUGH! and kill that companion first...

Uh..... hmmmm. You know.... I might have to go back to Daggerfall and set it to novice just to get out of the "tutorial" dungeon.

Never occurred to me before....

Reality raises it's ugly head once again to lay waste to my fanciful musings. I was trying (yet again) to cram 10lbs into a 5lb bag with my dual wielder, so a Breton Sneak Archer it will be. I won't say she's a simplistic build, as she'll end up with all the bells and whistles, but I can get her sorted out much easier. Archery, Sneak, Light Armor with Smithing, Alchemy and Enchanting to warm my crafting heart. Dwemsey will be my gal :)

I'm determined to play Aahni, my khajiit uhhh... well, in the old class system from Oblivion, Acrobat would be the closest...

I just went back today to give her a run to kinda acclimate myself to Skyrim again, but... I had saved her game in the first tower in Helgen. When I fired it up, she was in first person, running full bore into the door leading back out to where the headsman had been. I couldn't make her stop running, couldn't make any controls work to stop her, make her jump, sneak, or do anything else at all. Soooo...

Aahni had to be recreated from scratch, which really tics me off. Fortunately my other characters (Tubasha and Nie Teh) seem to be fine.

I added the SSE mod "Legendary Armors" to my load order. the author claims it is essentially Immersive armors for females ported to SE. So far, it doesn't look like an advantage mod at all. I acquired a "Banded Iron Breastplate" that had a value of 4, a weight of 13, and gave an AR of 15 (compare that with cheap fur armor that gives a 25 AR, eh?)

So, I made some Steel Plate stuff (yes it lets you do that early on without the Advanced steel plate perk) but the armor was only about the quality of regular Steel, not Steel Plate. Aahni probably won't use it until late in game in any case, because she primarily needs to be sneaky and light.

@Neil the save bug early in the opening "tutorial" portion of the game is intermittent. I've had it happen to saves right before choosing to go with Ralof or Hadvar as well as the Tower with Ulfric. Only remedy is to remake the game. Now I always do a hard save right after character creation on the Vanilla start so I don't have to fiddle with sliders a 100th time. ;)
