Well, it's been nearly 80 years.... probably a few skeletons, but they may not have to go in there. I have to go look it over in-game tomorrow to see if rope-climbing to the balcony is feasible....

Didn't get any play today; step-daughter and SIL came up this morning to do the first part of the chimney-cap repair (to keep water out of the fireplace the rest of the summer - monsoon season you know), and after the last daughter gets married in October they'll come up for a long weekend to finish it up "right" (Rich is quite the perfectionist....)

They brought my old oak desk home too. Rich re-glued and re-nailed, and freshened the finish without making it "look like new" (which I didn't want). It's in the basement while the finish hardens; when I get it back up here I'll take a photo to post! Should have taken a "before" one, but didn't think about it.....

Sounds like you had a good and productive day, even if you didn't get to adventure. :D I'd like to see the desk too. I've never had a really good one of my own.

This one came to me from my dad's parents. They bought it in a "flood sale" in Kansas City in the mid-20s I think. It wasn't water damaged at all - the damage happened in moving it from Missouri to Vegas after grandpa died (in the mid-60s), then moving it here in the mid-90s. It was made of edge-glued boards which were then cut to pattern (because after the war of course there wasn't a lot of very wide wood I guess), and by the time we'd had it here for a few years, it was "tottery" - nearly falling apart.

So when Rich offered to repair it for me, I was thrilled.

Rough as hell today. Much of it has moved into my chest. I can't sleep other than perhaps a half-hour at a time because of coughing fits, and I'm about exhausted. It's really getting hard to think at this point. Oh well, it only hurts until it quits, eh? ;)

Hmm. If you don't see some improvement soon, you'd better get to a doctor. You do NOT want pneumonia.

Sere is right Neil, you really don't. If you have fever with this, you need to keep it down, it's much harder on adults than kids. Try not to sleep flat either, a recliner if you have one is better.
Now I'm getting worried 'bout ya.

I haven't had any fever with this other than a slight retrograde that's been running about 97 degrees. As to bed, I cat nap in my chair by the computer most of the time, but my bed is set up so it is something like a recliner normally. I've always had issues with sleeping flat. I had pneumonia a lot as a child (ages 6 through 8), and developed my habits as a result.

Six - Breaking into a vampire’s den

Former den, but still.... None of us was at all happy about any of this, but poor Arngeir to have been here so long, and really, no matter that it sent chills down my spine, it needed doing. There was a light mist this morning, which made the entire scene even less appealing. We huddled into heavier clothing and added cloaks against the wet and chill.

I led off around the castle to the east. Damn this place was huge! It took us probably an hour to get to the area g’ma had talked about - there was a tower, an arched bridge, and nothing but island bones where we stood. The bridge was a good couple of stories above our heads. I thought a bit, then said “Let’s move the camp here. It’s flat enough. And while we do that, we need to think about how to handle the climb.”

A couple of hours later, we’d moved camp, and I’d come up with the only thing likely to work.

“See you - we’ll have to send a light line up and over with an arrow. Then tie on the climbing rope, and you two will have to be the anchor while I get up there to talk to Arngeir.”

“Ma.... it would be better for Ter to go up than you.”

“No. I know you mean age and being slighter in weight - but I’m the one Arngeir knows. It will be better not to have to go into long explanations that you’re my children and so on.... It will go a lot faster if I just do it.”

Ter bit her lip and slanted a glance at Vaer.

“So.... I suppose your da told you not to let me do this?”

They nodded, reluctantly.

“Well, I’m overruling him. I’m here, he’s not, and we’re not arguing any further over it.”

Getting an arrow over the bridge with a light rawhide line was no issue at all. Vaer took care of that, and Ter tied on the climbing rope. “Ma. Check my knots.”

I did. “They’re good. Thank you both. Now, I’m going to place grasp-knots at intervals, so I don’t lose grip as it’s wet. And Vaer, I need those fancy gloves you bought - the ones with the roughhide palms.”

The mist let up for a bit just as I got the knots set. I pulled on Vaer’s gloves, bound them at the wrists with rawhide, and set out to climb to the bridge as Ter and Vaer anchored the rope behind me..

I can’t say it was easy. Were I thirty years younger.... well, I’m not and there’s an end of that! I did slip a couple of times, which sent my heart into my throat and caused me to hear Var yelling in my head. But by the end of half an hour I was able to hoist myself onto the bridgework.

“I’m up. I’m fine! Rest, and I’ll go talk to Arngeir.” I hoped. I didn’t want to find him dead. And looking at the door ahead of me, I felt chills race down my body. Vampire den. I so didn’t want to do this.

‘Just - do it. Knock on the door then open it.’ I reached out and the door flew open in front of me!

Ha, no doubt Var will hear about his attempted interference, lol. Good one Sis, but that ending! Got us hanging from that cliff again, in a very startling way! That was great! :D

Interlude - The Twins

“Da’s going to - be - unhappy, Va. What do we say?”

“We tell the truth Te: ma knew he’d coached us, and overruled him.”

“Na brother mine. He’s going to say two of us to one.”

“He can say it - but she’s our mother. Oh yes. We aren’t children now. But she’s still our mother. And da wasn’t here, was he?”

“No. He couldn’t be. He had to be High King right now....”

“Yes. He did.”

Interlude - Var

I’ve torn my hair out to the roots - for days now. And STILL these damned old men won’t give over. I’m done. I’m just - DONE.

“I cannot believe you two are wasting my time over a played-out mine. I sent my steward there to look it over. There’s no ore left, you gits! NONE. What are you playing at? It cannot possibly be ore that’s long dug.

“So you have two options. Two, ONLY. First, you will make compact over this useless mine, that whoever comes by it and decides to spend the septims to dig deeper, see if there’s anything still to be found, will become owner by right of work - AND will have choice of hold beholden to.

“Or second, I will decide, and let me just tell you, I’m not minded to decide for either hold at this point. I give you a seven-day. After that, my rule will stand.”

He rose, sent a killing glance at each Jarl, and stalked out of the room.

The silence was - deafening.

LOL, love it Sere, the kids are worried about their Dad getting angry. Only they aren't kids anymore, but...yep, Moms overrule. They can't win. *snicker*

And Var, oh at last we see some temper from the KING! Take THAT, stubborn old coots!!

Well.... Var's worried about his three. And of course his policy of "non-interference" has - instead of pacifying the Jarls - caused them their own angst.

Fallout's a bitch. And if it's the wrong kind.... you die.

Thanks Sis!

Non-interference can be a good thing, but in their case, no. They needed to know their High King is capable of stepping in when it's needed. And he showed them quite well that he is. :D No matter what's happening.
