Yeah. Of course, his whole thing originally was to get his own immortality from Molag Bal. To do that, he had to convince Valerica to go along. But there really was no reason to force Serana into that whole thing. Well - outside of the needs of the DLC's story that is!

Oh, me either. I did a LOT of reading on UESP. Nopenopenope - no vampires for my girls....

And in fact - the whole "Daughters of Coldharbour" thing reminds me all too much of Thalkharsh - the demon Tarma and Kethry had to deal with.... *shudder*

Ten - Twins back with several rabbits and plenty of other foodstuff

“How did you get cabbage, carrots, potatoes and tomatoes?” I was somewhat astounded.

“Met a hunter, traded him some arrows for half his stash - he was all out of ammo after having to deal with a pack of wolves. Also left him some potions - he was pretty cut up.” Vaer was skinning rabbit and handing off to Ter to butcher. They worked with the precision of long practice.

Ter went on, “Also, ran into a courier, so sent him off to Da - without saying a whole lot.” She slanted me a sly glance, and I just nodded.

“It’s funny that we can almost always find a courier, even out here on the edge of nowhere!” I thought the twins might be so used to it they never gave it a thought.

Vaer mused “Well.... seems all of us except Da have that happen. Got to be the bloodline. I guess we must be about the last of the Ravens, after all.”

“Pretty much. And as you all marry, the next generation is likely to find their blood diluted too much to be useful in such ways. Still, I’m happy that’s all it’s gone to - being like Idgrod would just be WAY too much at least for me.” I grew introspective, my thoughts traveling over the lives of my grandmother and her great aunt.

When the rabbits were neatly dismembered, I bundled up what the twins wouldn’t use and clambered back up the rope, with them anchoring - presumably so they didn’t have to try to lie to their father! He might not be a Raven, but when it came to falsehoods, he was just as good!

Slipping back into the study, I set about cooking a meal. I set a rabbit stew to cook with some of the vegetables, and put the tomatoes aside for later.

Arngeir raised his eyebrows. “Where did all that come from?”

“My twins hunted the rabbits, and helped a hunter with wounds - traded him some arrows and potions for the rest. You’ve got flour, and I’ve got a bit of yeast so I’ll make stone cakes for later with the tomatoes.”

He grinned, looking suddenly much younger than I knew he had to be. I wasn’t about to ask him how old, but far more than 80 in any case! I wondered if the austerity of being a Master of the Voice had a preservative aspect.

“You’ll spoil me! Perhaps I won’t want to find Sovngarde after all!”

“Look you - we would be happy to give you a home for your years remaining. And Durnehviir too as for that! Not sure where we’d put him.... hmmm. Ustengrav maybe! He could keep the idiot bandits out of it - always showing up, new ones, after a clean-up.”

Arngeir just looked at me in shock. “The dragon too? But....”

“Master, it’s gold to groundnuts if we’ll be able to find Alduin’s soul. If we can’t, well.... we’ll see if we can figure out some other way to loose the Cairn’s hold on Durnehviir. NO dragon should have to deal with that!”

“Well.... he did sell himself for knowledge of the necromantic sort....”

“Oh, I know it well. But - a bad bargain in youth should not determine the entirety of your fate for all time.”

He gazed at me abstractedly. “You - are - very different, are you not, than most Nords.”

I began to make stone cakes to bake on the hearth. “Oh aye. So I am.” And there we left it for that time.

I like how that was a statement, and not a question by Arngeir. Old age has made him wise beyond belief.

Thanks, Kane! I like to think he's very wise, and a lot more "human" than the game has portrayed him.

She's definitely thinking outside the box! I very much like her interactions with Arngeir, and his surprise is pretty funny. Nice to see that she's prodding his thinking. :D

And wouldn't it be a BIG surprise for any that approached Ustengrav...when Durny popped up from somewhere. hehe

Eleven - Took Valerica two days to get back to us

So I guess that means even a millennia-old vampire-necromancer doesn’t know everything. For some reason, that thought gave me way too much enjoyment!

“Well, Tiercel Ravenwing. You didn’t tell me you were the High Queen.”

“I try not to think about it. Would knowing that have made you research faster?”

She slanted me a strange glance. “You really should think twice before antagonizing me.”

“I don’t think so. Thing is, I am what I am, and I’m not ever going to change. If you find it necessary to harm me - well....”

“Ladies, please. Valerica, what have you discovered?”

She hmphed under her breath, but said finally “Not a lot, Master Greybeard. For one thing, Alduin’s soul is not in the Cairn, which is important; but since the Ideal Masters wouldn’t tell Durnehviir any more than that, I’m not much further along. Of course, they might not KNOW more than that. Which rather puts paid to their ‘we know everything’ charade, doesn’t it?”

Hmm. Interesting. “Do you have any thoughts then, about where we should look? Could a necromancer have somehow grabbed the soul?”

An arrested look crossed her face. “Your grandmother killed the dragon in Sovngarde did she not?”

“Aye. With the help of three ancient Nord heroes: Gormlaith Golden-Hilt, Felldir the Old, and Hakon One-Eye. They were the three who sent Alduin to our time using an Elder Scroll, instead of figuring out how to really kill him - which is why g’ma had to deal with him, and why they were told to mend their error by helping her to do so.”

“So. You’ll have to possess your soul in more patience then. I will need to - contact - a spirit that is now in Sovngarde to inquire further about this. This is intriguing....”

Eh, so now I’ve provided her something to relieve her thousands of years of boredom. She wandered away, and I turned to Arngeir.

“You may answer or not - as you please - but I’d like to know if you think you’re really going to die soon. I mean.... Valerica doesn’t seem to realize that “real humans” don’t have all the centuries she has to live and dig around in Sovngarde for answers....”

Arngeir smiled gently. “No child - I’m not likely to die before we figure this out. I would have spent some years at the shrine, with those of Ivarstead feeding me. Actually - this is a better use of the end of my life: helping you to help Durnehviir.”

To me (though I have no reason to think so particularly) the popcorn emoticon means that I am engrossed with watching what is occurring, while waiting and wondering in excited anticipation of what is gonna happen next. Does that help?
:D

I like to use the emoticons now and again because eventually words tend to get repetitive, and endless compliments begin to sound like you're blowing smoke up someone's ass after a while, you know? So, I break it up with an emoticon every now and then. Doesn't mean I'm less interested or appreciative, just means my limited collection of smarts has nothing new to say. :)
