Nineteen: Ugh.

So, this morning at day-meal, I had to ask. “Var. What are we going to do about incipient vampire-hysteria?”

And he just looked at me, puzzled. “What do you mean, what are we going to do?”

“Uh.” And that was about all I could think of at that point.

“Sweetheart - there’s always been vampire-hysteria. It’s been less than a hundred years since a vampire not only lived right next door to Morthal for a century or so, but also took nearly all the young women to do with as he liked. AND he might have been one of the Volkihar.

“Morthal’s got the repute as a vampire’s wet-dream. We’re not going to be able to fix that. And in any case, it doesn’t matter, because as real reports come in, we’ll send the guard to take care of it. Serana’s not an issue, and Divines - I hope Valerica stays up there in her nice cozy study....”

“Ah. Fine, you have all that sorted. I’m going to have the twins bring Arngeir down here. If Alduin’s soul isn’t in the Cairn - as apparently it’s not - then Arngeir doesn’t need to stay at the portal. And since.... I’ve rather come to the conclusion that.... we can’t take Alduin’s soul if there is a reason for him retaining it wherever he may be - in other words, he’s got to wait until it’s really time to become the real World Eater - then I’m going to have to work out some other way to help Durnehviir.”

Var sent me such a loving look that I was momentarily more interested in bed than anything. But his words were a very effective cold waterfall.

“Tier.... You have three of the most powerful benevolents - well, not at your beck and call precisely.... but your words to their ears will always be heard, right? Perhaps you should ask others, rather than try to parse this yourself....”

I’m an idiot. But at least my husband is NOT one. “Thank you my love. Sometimes I get so wrapped up in minutiae....”

“I know it. As I do, in other directions - and that’s when you pull me up short and tell me how the cow ate the cabbage, isn’t it?”

We held each other close, laughing. And of course, that lovely moment was interrupted by Felgon, the steward (yes, Falk Firebeard’s grandson - it seems it has become a hereditary office somehow).

“Oh, sorry, Highnesses. Guard Commander Rolvor is here with report, m’lord.”

Back to duty.... but with lighter hearts!

Great stuff! "Incipient vampire hysteria" and "vampire's wet dream" had me laughing. I DO think Valerica will be a major problem soon :O

BTW Sere, my nick was given to me by a hunting buddy years ago because of the rifle I use for big game hunting, a .338 Lapau.

Oh, thanks, Lappy! And I'm glad to know the reason behind the nick - my first thought of course was Lapua, Finland.... and it's sort of right on anyway! Hmm. Now, didn't Nammo do the ammunition for that caliber rifle first before producing the rifle as well?

Heh. Valerica IS a problem. That's unlikely to change.... considering.

Sere,

You are correct about the cartridge, and I should have been more specific. My rifle is made by Sako and it is chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum. Most .338 Lapua rifles are heavy tactical beasts, not suited for scabbard use! I picked up my Sako TRG-S (S for Sporting) 16-17 years ago for cheap when not many people knew about the cartridge. It's been my deer and elk rifle ever since.

I actually used my .270 Mountain Rifle for both deer and elk, changing up to magnum cartridges for elk. I can't do the kick in a larger caliber, and the .270 kind of fit the bill just fine.

Twenty: Arngeir seems to be happy

Well, how could he not be, out of a vampire’s den more or less? Eh, I suppose he might have liked the quiet - which, I have to say, he’s not getting in Morthal.

First, there’s the continuing fuss over Serana. That goes on at court every time anyone from any hold shows up here - and of course, they’ve all showed up here since I got back - and they’re NOT going away. *sigh* Don’t these gits of Jarls have Holds to see to?

They do, but obviously, the Holds are going along JUST FINE without their Jarls. Hmm. Var might need to point that out.... And that set me off into giggles.

‘Tier! STOP THAT! Laugh when it’s over.’ Yep. Huh. Not likely to be over any time soon....

Anyway, Arngeir and g’ma are happy telling over old tales, and he’s actually getting.... eh, not precisely FAT - but he looks more well-fed - than he did. He has real color in his skin, and he moves with less strain.

I wonder, I do. He’s ancient, is Master Arngeir. I - rather think - he’s as old as Valerica....

And there’s a problem. Serana has had messages from her mother. They’ve caused her to - lock g’ma out....

“Tiercel. I - need to - talk to you. Away from - Morthal....”

“Well, then, let’s get the horses and head up to High Gate. Probably a few draugr to remove by now.”

She nodded shortly, and we strolled to the stables so no one got the wind up. I watched out of the corners of my eyes as she tacked old Merkin, who was perfectly happy to have some care and didn’t seem fussed about a vampire in his saddle.

As we neared High Gate, she finally began to talk. “It’s.... mother. She’s - been - pushing at me. She - wants to - get out of the Castle, though I don’t understand that. She’ll never find a better lab....”

Ah. “Serana.... Your mother has realized that you are - no longer under her rule. And.... she is wanting to - recapture you. You are so many actual years old - but you never had a.... tween rebellion. Your - family life - precluded that.

“Most children, as they hit the years between twelve and fifteen (and that’s actually quite variable so don’t quote me on that!) find that they need to assert that they are people in their own rights. Which means their parents go through - some years of - angst while the children figure out adult behavior.”

She stared off into space. And then she turned to me and said “So. My parents, being what they were, didn’t - allow - me to realize that there were things I needed to discover for myself?”

Hoo boy. I managed to feel both deep sorrow for Serana, and absolute fury for her parents - at one and the same moment.

“I... think.... that’s a pretty fair estimate. Serana.... you were a pawn in both their lives and schemes. It’s - to your credit, not theirs, that you have become the person you are today.” And holy HELLS, I didn’t want her to hear the sub-text to all that....

She simply sat the old gelding and thought. And when she lifted her eyes to mine, they were.... not vampire eyes at all.... I did my best to not react.

“From henceforth, Tiercel Ravenwing - I will take you as my model. As my - parent - if you do not object. No no. I don’t want - mothering as such. What I want is - honesty. I want.... NEED.... to know how to go on from here.

“Without.... interference.... from Valerica.”

I thought it deeply profound that she used her mother’s name, rather than calling Valerica “mother”.

“Serana - I will do what I can to help you. I will not allow your - um - Valerica - to cause harm to those under my care, see you. But I will say.... I believe you have found your path forward - and I will aid you as I am able.”

I held out my hand to her, and she clasped it.

Ok, I have to say....holy shit. What a responsibility for Tier! Were I her, I think I'd be smiling as I pulled my hair out... :O Dealing with Valerica will not be a walk in the park, but I'm happy for Arngeir!

That was well done!!

Eh.... somebody has to deal with Serana. The devs just left her hung out to dry. Now, I don't have any interest in any of the vampires in the game. Just - UGH. But in my private "world" - well.... it's Tier's to do. I actually do feel sorry for Serana - when she's not driving me NUTS in game!

Oh boy.. that's going to be fun... tween angst, even if the tween is older than dirt... and a Mother that's might end up with empty nest syndrome.. But it sound's like even grumpy old men can start anew.. long as they have something to look forward to and live for.

Thanks sis! Poor Arngeir - he didn't have a choice about being a grumpy old man. Probably he'd rather not have been the only Greybeard who could deal with the "normals". Now, of course, he's the only one period, and so far he's being remarkably patient while Tier gets her ducks in a row.

We'll be off to do something further about Durnehviir shortly I believe....
