Yep. This bunch of Veri's family is - a WHOLE lot of fun, kind of along the line of a barrel of monkeys. Or is that donkeys? Eh.... I get confuzzled.

Load the packs and saddlebags onto the monkey, and hand that donkey a banana, that's what I always do... (I learned that from Ol' Jack Burton, eh?)

Chapter 32: The Twins - Meetings - and partings

With Var and Tier off to Whiterun, and g’ma Veri grinning like a fool every time she saw them, the twins were grumbling. But of course, you can’t get beyond family. Can’t live with them, and living without them.... is barren. So they put up with it for a bit.

Finally Ter said “Look. Let’s just go out in the marsh for a bit. I’m - tired of being.... watched....” So they saddled the horses and headed toward Ustengrav and Tier’s old place Windstad Manor. They passed the Manor by and stopped alongside the dock below it. Dismounting, they settled to a bit of food and drink.

“Ter, what are we going to do about being Jarls in Whiterun?”

“The same as we would have done were we going to be Jarls in Hjaalmarch. It’s the same thing, just in a different place, after all.”

And that was the moment when Vaer realized that Ter was - more - mature than he was. That could have been a bitter pill - but well, as twins there was little to choose between after all. So he put that aside to think on later.

Ter laid back into the sunshine on the bank, and thought about a lot of things, until she was almost dozing. Vaer sat and thought dark thoughts about growing up, and women. Suddenly a dragon-shadow overcast the sun, and brought both of them upright.

“Ah. Just the people I wanted to see. I have spoken with Arngeir, and he has told me what you propose - and why. It’s odd - I’ve known all along that I might die if I stayed away from the Cairn too long. But it did not occur to me that - I could use that as a way to.... eh.... foil the Masters and their leash on my life. I thank you for showing me the way.

“I am bound for Paarthurnax’s Aerie. When you come there, we two eldest of this province will be dust and ashes - and perhaps some bones. We will meet you many years hence in Sovngarde. My very great thanks to you twain. Without you, I would probably have been a slave to the Masters into the next Age.”

Ter rose to her feet and ran to Durnehviir. Encircling his neck with her arms, she kissed him gently on the cheek. With tears in her eyes, she said softly “We will meet you in our long-home. Be well, and be free!”

Vaer stumbled to his feet as the dragon lumbered into the air. The twins found tears on their cheeks long after he had flown south - toward the Throat of the World.

“We.... should go home, tell g’ma Veri what has happened....” And so they did.

<sniffle> very good read! Maturity is not cast in the stone of one's age, but in the actions of flesh and blood.

Thank you Lappy. I'm a bit behind on writing - spent the holiday cooking of course, then spent the rest of the weekend making Christmas Tree Bread for family, spent today getting an implant and now naturally my mouth/jaw hurt and I'm droopy.... /grumble (things like implants were easier by far 40 years ago....)

Chapter 33: Vaerlon - G’ma Veri suggests a trip

We wound up taking turns telling g’ma Veri what Durnehviir had said, and what we’d said and done. Her face was sad but she was smiling a little too.

“It was well done, children. Now, it’s time for the family to return to the Aerie. We will stop by Whiterun, and see if your parents and Balgruuf would like to climb the Seven Thousand Steps again. Get packed, and you can ride if you’d rather, while I take the carriage. After all, Var tricked it out fancy and yet we hardly ever use it!”

So we set out the next morning, and upon arriving in Whiterun, discovered we didn’t need to do much persuading to get ma and da, and Balgruuf, to trek to the Aerie with us. Ma and da rode, and Balgruuf joined g’ma Veri in the carriage. We took several days getting to Ivarstead, as g’ma and Balgruuf weren’t comfortable in the carriage for hours and hours on end.

The climb to High Hrothgar was accomplished by putting Balgruuf and g’ma on two of the horses and loading the gear on the others; we four walked up behind the riders, leading the other two horses. Ter had a strange look on her face; I finally edged up to her and asked “What’s wrong?”

She shook her head, then said softly “I think - we will find much sadness above.” She didn’t say any more, and I wondered what she meant - I mean, surely we all know that we will find the Dragon and the Greybeard dead, gone to dust and ashes.... and bones....

We finished the climb by dusk - none of us wanted to try staying on the trail overnight - wind, cold, and a wolf or so wouldn’t have made kind bedfellows! We set up camp as quickly as possible, to get our elders out of that wind - it was vicious, like the worst of winter anywhere.

Ma and Ter set to heating food while da and I did the tents and took care of horses. After eating, it was full dark, and we all headed for bedrolls; it had been a long day. I wondered what morning would bring....

Chapter 34: The Family - Endings - and beginnings

None of us really wanted to go out and look around in the daylight, but of course - that was why we were here, after all. So, after eating a bit and bundling up (as it seemed the winds and cold here were the worst they’d ever been), we all headed for Talos’s shrine in the arms of the old word wall.

And that’s where we found them - dust and ashes.... and bones. We were all in tears, but finally Ter said through sobs “Look.... at the... bones....!”

We did. Then we looked at each other, and back at the bones, and cried more and harder. For there were two bones laid against each other, and both were inscribed with words in the dragon language.

The larger - one of Durnehviir’s of course - had the words Ruvaak Miraad Bex shining against the antique-seeming ivory of the bone. That could be transliterated as Raven Doorway Open.... And the long leg-bone which was likely Arngeir’s was graven with two words: Mu Saraan - we await. So.... Our two friends, the ancient dragon bound by the Masters to servitude beyond end and the not quite as ancient (though still very aged) Greybeard were willing for us to call them when there was need.

We placed offerings on Talos’s altar, and moved the bones of Durnehviir and Arngeir close to the word wall. And then - we turned for home. Our world was still in turmoil - as it ever seemed - and we had much to do to help it survive.

It is our rede after all - that Ravens should always take wing over Skyrim. We saluted our friends now departed, and started down the long path to home.
