Chapter 3: The Twins So we hunted and gathered, and hauled enough water for several days. We’d dug around in the old kitchens where g’ma Verinne had entered the ruins under the courtyard with Serana, coming up with usable if ancient kettles - hard to carry kettles on horseback though we both had various smaller cook-pots, as well as plates, cups, and utensils. Cleaned up thoroughly with boiling water, they would do fine for storing water, and cleaning dishes and pots. Then we took down the chains, the bars, and tried opening the door. No go. So we pried out the hinges, and then pulled the door out of its frame. The mess beyond was - ugly. And disheartening. First thing, if we’d thought the Castle a dirty shambles - well, this was a thousand times worse, or more. Since it was nearly sundown, we decided to clean up, eat a bit, and start on it in the morning. It didn’t look much better in the morning. But after clearing out some of the larger pieces of seriously rotting furnishings, we could see that “pulling down the walls” was an overstatement of note. It wasn’t going to be a walk beside the shore, but it shouldn’t take us years either. It was a matter of levering leaning walls and bracing them up solidly, then clearing the rubble that was filling the stairwells and floors. We settled on working for a day, then resting and hunting the next, taking time for bathing and also hauling water - we’d probably never fully appreciated the fact that Skyrim had so much pure clean water that we never had to go far to find it! Two seven-days into the process, we figured we were about halfway done. Certainly the walls and stairs and hallways were not perfectly replaced - but you could climb the stairs and walk the halls without worrying about the walls falling on you. Valerica and Serana had apparently believed that Harkon had blasted the entire tower from below, leaving only the actual rooms Valerica had used. Had he done so, we’d have had to resort to climbing as ma had. Valerica appeared every couple of days. She said little, and we wondered if it was possible she actually missed company. Neither of us was like to ask though! All we said was that we thought we’d be done within a moon or maybe a bit longer. And finally, three days past the moon we’d estimated, we were done. And of course, that meant that Valerica had to put up with us on the portal steps until we could speak with the Masters of the Soul Cairn. We had no idea how long it might take to get their attention. Valerica had offered to - contact them for us. We - thought that an abysmal idea. Likely, they’d try to re-imprison her just because she’d escaped them. Or they’d refuse to discuss the entire thing just to be spiteful.... So we determined to - just wait.... and see what happened. |

Good for them... a little (or a lot ) of hard work can be a reward of it's own.. and I can't imagine that they don't have patience! Hunters generally do. |

Yeah, though I'd bet Tier's had the opposite idea some! Then again, mothers are not the best at estimating their children's strengths - or weaknesses. |

Thanks neil! *snerk* No dynamite in Skyrim far as I know! But really - the destruction was an act of rage 5k years back (at least, in my tale - no clue how much time is supposed to have passed in the actual DLC *shrug* - and don't really care). Harkon was a - well, I consider him (like Ulfric) a short man (eh, okay, vampire) with a Napoleon complex. So, he blustered, and just made a token effort to obliterate access to Valerica's "special" area - without apparently ever knowing there were other ways into it.... Just like he trashed the garden - and never noticed the moon-dial.... |

Love their determination, and like Are said, their sense of humor. They'd have to have one, to be doing what they are now, and dealing with that woman/vamp! Sounds like Harkon went on a 'brat rant', with no brainpower behind his destructions. Hehe, though it's worked out for the twins. :D |

Thanks Sis! I find it interesting in the extreme that Veri's family is kind of like the energizer bunny.... |

Nice of the twins to help out Valerica. Maybe the pole will slide out of her ass a little bit. Always a good read, Sere! :book: |

Chapter 4: Vaerlon On this third day of sitting as close to the actual portal as possible (about the fourth step up - any closer and it started to be painful), we felt something approaching, and got our hopes up. Well.... it wasn’t the Masters, one or more. It was Durnehviir. He slid his head up as if through water to gaze past us into Valerica’s study. Then he looked us over. “Ah. Tiercel’s twins. And how fares your family?” “They are well, we believe - though we’ve been here without contact for over a moon now. I know ma could get word to us if we were needed home, so that we haven’t heard anything just means things are quiet.” We hoped. Valerica suddenly appeared, walking down the steps. “Durnehviir. How do things go on, there in the Cairn?” “Much as always, Valerica. It’s a place of - time paused, after all. You must be more comfortable now that you have returned home?” She glanced sidelong at Ter and me, then replied “There is a sufficiency of work - and now that I have my lab and notes, my ingredients, and the way reopened from below thanks to Tiercel’s twins, I am ready to continue my researches.” “And Serana? How does she fare?” A pinched look fell over Valerica’s face. “She.... is wandering in Cyrodiil, looking for a cure for her - our - particular version of vampirism.” “Ah. Interesting. I take it that you do not wish her to find a cure?” “Oh, Serana is her own woman. She may do as she finds necessary, without interference from me. I - am not myself interested in a cure. I - rather believe - that a cure will be instant death, as many millennia as have passed for us.” Durnehviir gazed abstractedly into and through all of us. It was an odd sensation for true - there is something about a dragon’s eyes.... Ter finally stood and stretched, breaking the ancient dragon’s concentration. “I am sorry. I failed to restrain my vision; I hope you have taken no hurt?” Ter grinned. “No. I just needed to get my butt off this cold stone for a bit!” Durnehviir laughed. And that was.... something strange, for certain! I didn’t know dragons could laugh.... Then he returned his attention to Valerica. “I think, Valerica, that your belief is awry. Now, once Serana has located the cure, and completed it, she will begin to age normally from the stasis point - well, both of them, the one produced by Molag Bal and the one you instantiated when you entombed her for so long - it’s really unlikely that she’s going to simply dissipate into dust.” Valerica’s eyes dropped to the portal. “Well, I suppose we will eventually discover which of us is correct. I wish you good fortune, Durnehviir.” And with that she paced back up the steps to her rooms. Durnehviir waited a bit, then snorted - which sent a definite smell of brimstone over us. I coughed, and waved a hand in front of my face. “My apologies, Vaerlon. I should have baffled the exudate.” I waved the apology away. “Nah then, it’s fine. I gather you think - uh....” I wasn’t sure just how to phrase it. “I think that Valerica has lived too long with her fears and her vampirism and her memories. I think.... that she wants to disintegrate to dust, but is afraid.” Oh. Hmm. Well, that would require thinking on.... “Ah. I am summoned. I will tell the Masters that you are here wishing audience. And - thank you for what you attempt to do.” With that, Durnehviir seemed to disappear as under water, and was gone. Ter and I looked at each other, at the portal, and up toward Valerica’s study; we just shook our heads. |

Thanks sis! Well, it's never been absolutely a given that they CAN do what needs doing - but they're willing to do what they have to, at least to try. As usual, I'm not sure where this is going.... |
