Chapter 5: Terlinna

To mitigate the boredom of sitting on the “doorstep”, we took turn about to hunt, gather, and bring back some ingredients that Valerica needed.

This day, I had quite a load - deathbell and canis root for Valerica; a young buck that I’d shot just at dusk; a brace of pheasant, a couple of rabbits, and some vegetables I’d found in a wild garden area near what was apparently an old Thalmor fort. It was empty and dead - fine by me; from g’ma Veri’s stories those elves had been.... painful.... to deal with. So I relieved Vaer and sent him to deal with the buck; I’d field dressed the small game, and set to skinning them while I waited.

So, still nothing from the Masters. It occurred to me that we should have told Durnehviir what we wanted audience for - but then I suppose he knew. Whether he would tell the Masters or not - well, we hadn’t asked; and it might not have been something he would have wanted to answer.

Finally, three days later, the strange light below the fourth step began to swirl and meander in a - rather - wiggly manner. Shortly there was it seemed a host of entities just below us, but still inside the Soul Cairn where we could not go without serious pain.

Vaer cocked his head, I settled back to the step I’d been half off of to move around a little, and we waited.

Eventually, a strange multiple voice whispered around us. I couldn’t make out individual words, but got the sense - dropped into my mind I suppose - that the Masters wanted to know what we were doing here, and why we wanted to talk to them. So, apparently Durnehviir hadn’t said anything about our purpose - and perhaps he’d considered that it might prejudice the Masters in the wrong direction?

We looked at each other, and then whispered jointly in reply “We offer to do a task for you, in exchange for the release of Durnehviir to Nirn so that he may make his way to Sovngarde to be with others of his kind.”

The whispering changed to a multitude of mutters. After a few moments, nothing but silence. The swirling wiggles subsided, and the sense of presences faded. We looked at each other again, as a final thought came through - that they would think about it.

Good read!

Somehow, I'm still running about 2 days behind on seeing your updates. Is it possible that the updates show up in the thread, but not on the index page? I often just look at the date of the last post, and if I've been into the thread since then, I don't usually go inside.

At the bottom of the index page is "active topics" if you click that anything any one post's on any page show's with the red light bright... in a list, with things you may have looked at on the page, unless it's been a day or two.. then it might only be the thing's that you haven't looked at... now their are a couple thing's I have not looked at that I can't see, because more than a few days has gone by.

Interlude: Var, Tiercel, and Serana

Var and Tier were finishing a late meal - court had seemed to go on forever this time - when Melki walked in followed by Serana, a Serana completely free of the taint of vampirism.

They stood and walked to her. Melki motioned her to a chair, and grinned “She’d like to eat something besides blood!” He went off to find her a plate of something, and Tier smiled.

“So. You did not dissolve into the dust of millennia gone. And you will offer the cure to Valerica?”

“I will. I expect she won’t take it. That won’t matter - but I must at least offer, not only to her but to any other Volkihar or Daughter of Coldharbour I meet. That was the - condition - that was made when the Wisewitch taught me the cure.”

Melki had put before her a plate of the roast and vegetables they’d all eaten along with a glass of good wine; she began to eat - just like anyone normal did.

“Did we interrupt your own meal?”

“We’d finished. Court was late today for some reason - well, we know why.... The Jarls don’t want to stay home and be bored - they were better for some while, but here we are again.” Var shook his head in disgust.

Tier was watching Melki in some bemusement. He seemed.... oddly interested in Serana. She slanted a glance at Serana, who apparently understood perfectly what she was thinking, for she shook her head in negation. So, Melki wasn’t like the thralls - but what was toward then? Surely he.... wouldn’t.... Well of course he might. Men did fall into love in all the wrong directions.... and so did women! She’d have to talk to both of them, and then consider. Or - perhaps it would be best to let da deal with it.... Tier had to admit that a normal Serana was quite attractive. But would she want to tie herself to a man like Melki? No answer to that as yet. And perhaps never.

“Surely there are bandits, werewolves, and miscreants enough in their holds to keep boredom at bay?” Serana asked.

Var glanced at her, startled. This woman was so different from the Serana they’d known before.... “You’d think so, wouldn’t you. It’s sending me off the edge - for some reason unknown, they’ve gone back to thinking that as long as there’s a reasonable excuse for a High King, they can leave everything up to him. Me.” He sighed. “I do wish they’d just run their holds and not decide to live here!”

“Would you like more beef and wine Serana?” Tier asked.

“No - I’m trying to re-acclimate myself to real food. It’s best not to eat much at any given time, but eat a bit more frequently. Would - you be unhappy to give me a bed for a few nights? I have to decide how to get home.’

“What happened to BannDar?”

“Oh. He’s with me, but I thought you’d probably prefer him left here now.”

Tier grinned. “Actually, you’re perfectly free to stay with us as long as you like; and when you’re ready to leave, you may certainly do so riding on BannDar!”

Serana’s mouth dropped open, and Var thought she probably was close to tears. She whispered “Thank you - more than I can say.”
