[Just a heads' up: I've started on Serana's tale.... it'll be a while before I'm ready to start posting it, but don't expect to see much more in the Twins' Tale for obvious reasons.] |

I'm torn because I'm enjoying the twins tale, but I'd love to see how Serana's tale is spun. |

Nah - I meant don't expect to see much more of SERANA in the Twins' Tale! I'm not done with Ter and Vaer yet - not by a long shot! |

Chapter 6: Terlinna ‘Damn. I hate sitting around waiting. How is it Vaer is perfectly fine doing nothing but bide-and-stay?’ I didn’t know why - it was one of the few places we differed as if night and day. When I’d get up and stomp around because whatever wasn’t happening fast enough, he’d just shake his head and go back to his book, or his thoughts, or his meal.... I was grumpy and I knew it. So I tried really hard not to take it out on Vaer or Valerica - well, getting in a vampire’s face was just a bad idea all around, but that wasn’t why. We were guests in her home, as nasty a place as we thought it; it was just common sense and courteous behavior to be polite to our host. I spent my turns on the fourth step muttering mentally about what things the Masters could come up with that would be on the “not possible” side of accomplishing. I thought up and discarded way too many scenarios.... most of them involving sending us places that would get us dead in a hurry. See, there’s another thing: I’m a pessimist; Vaer’s glass of wine is always half full. As a stultifying exercise, this one was awful. And it seemed like going on forever. I even caught Valerica in sighs. Finally, on my next “off” shift, I walked up the stairs to where she stood by the alchemy lab, writing experiment results in a journal. “I’m sorry we’re still in your way here. I thought the Masters would be back before now, telling us where they wanted us to spend our lives in trying to release our poor dragon.” She looked up from the page, startled. “Oh. You - actually mean that.” “Uh. Mean what?” “That you feel sorrow for Durnehviir.” Ah. Well, she might be ancient, but she wasn’t exactly human, so I had to give her a pass though I really wanted to smack her. “Yes. We really do feel sorry for him. He did something he shouldn’t have really - and he’s paid with thousands and thousands of years. Of course I know that dragons - unless killed by one with the knowledge of doing so - are virtually immortal anyway. But that’s hardly the point, is it? “Immortality of race when you are free is altogether a different thing than immortality of race when you are bound by those who own your soul; when you can do nothing to either live or die because some - things - hold your leash and refuse to loose it. Durnehviir was tricked and trapped by the Masters - they lied by omission. That they have refused to release him from bondage even though you are no longer imprisoned there, well - it’s not right. Not at all. “We’re well aware that Durnehviir’s life-force is bound into the Cairn due to the thousands of years of - life - there, if you want to call it that. But we also believe that the Masters are able to mitigate that binding in some way. That is why we are sitting here in your way, waiting on them to tell us where they want us to go and what they wish us to accomplish before they will release the poor old dragon.” Valerica had turned fully toward me, her brows climbing toward her hairline. “Well. Knowing Verinne Ravenwing fairly well, and Tiercel not quite so well, I was - prepared - for the two of you to be.... unusual. But - you actually seem to have no rancor toward the dragons; and for Nords, well, that’s unusual. Highly. “That’s neither here not there of course. As for being in my way - you’re both quiet, you have brought me ingredients so I did not have to venture from here myself, and.... you’ve cleaned up my study here. I know you did it, so don’t dissemble! You simply did away with the dirt and the mess of millennia, and put everything back exactly where it belonged. “So. I’m grateful. You’re not ‘my kind’ of people. But - your family has always treated me fairly. I’m - not going to fuss that you’re here. The Masters are capricious in the extreme. I hope that your stay doesn’t become a weariness to you.” I forbore to tell her it already had. |

Ter is eager for action, but may not like what that action is! I really enjoyed learning more about the twins personalities :) |

Chapter 7: Vaerlon I knew that Ter was antsy. She hadn’t said anything to me, but - well. She’s my twin. I know what she feels most of the time, as she knows how I feel. Sometimes I’m quite sure we’d rather not know - but we don’t have that choice. So we deal with the doubled pressure of each others’ emotions. “Ter, if you’d rather do more of the hunting and gathering, I’ll be fine just sitting and waiting. I know it bothers you some.” “Brother mine, you know me too well. I’m - not good - at biding my time, waiting for anything. And certainly not sitting here while these entities decide aye or nay, and if aye, where they’re going to send us to try to get us killed.” Huh. I hadn’t even thought about that - as usual Ter was three leaps ahead of me mentally. I was suddenly happy I wasn’t eldest: if I were, people would expect far too much of me! I do know myself quite well... So I sat, and Ter hunted, gathered Valerica’s ingredients, and fished, grubbed vegetables, and just in general seemed more even of temper. With my sister smoothed out, I was happier too. This was a very good thing, because two months to the day that we arrived at the Castle, two things happened: Serana returned, completely cured of vampirism; and the Ideal Masters appeared to tell us they’d have a decision by morning. We both found that strange. And the Castle was decidedly a colder place in feeling - because Valerica was anything but happy with Serana, a Serana who with the first words out of her mouth offered Valerica the same cure Serana had found. Ter and I chose to go set up camp outside until morning. |

Hmmm... Serana: "Here Mom! I brought you something! It's a potion you can drink that will cure your vampirism! What? Well, yeah... it'll make you die, but... I mean that's the point isn't it? You know I wouldn't give you a potion that will kill you if I didn't love you and have your best interests at heart... Mom, uhm... Why are your teeth getting longer?" I'd love to hear that conversation, eh? ;) |

But... it will kill her eventually, right? I mean, she's human now, so going to age and eventually die, right?? |

Well, that's true. But what Valerica believes (in my particular "universe" if you will) is that she will take the cure - and immediately disintegrate into dust. Which won't happen. But yes - Serana will age normally, and eventually die. In her mind (in my "universe") Serana sees that as a fair trade - because she can actually live, and perhaps love. Whether Valerica will realize that some things are more valuable because they are time-limited.... I don't know yet. |
