Chapter 8: The Twins

Morning found us sitting - yes, BOTH of us - again on the fourth step. Waiting. As always. We discussed (very quietly) the thing with Serana and Valerica, but neither of us were likely to be asked opinions, so eventually we fell silent, shrugging off the concerns of a former-vampire child and her still-vampire mother.

We should perhaps not have been so.... dismissive.

Finally the massed intellects of the Ideal Masters were pooled below us. One of them (perhaps the most “Ideal” of them all? Irreverence is we suppose our besetting sin....) said - aloud and how odd that was - “Well then. Here is your task. You are to approach every vampire you can find, and do your best to convince each to use the cure - to ‘unvampire’ themselves.

“There is a - hmmm - finite limit on this. Convince thirty vampires to cure themselves, and we will release the dragon, enabling it to live long enough to - die - outside the Cairn, thereby going to Sovngarde where it may find its kin. Why you wish this we do not know - but since you are fervent in this undertaking, well. This is what you must do to obtain release for the dragon.”

Sobered, we looked each other in the eyes. And then -

“How kind of you. I suppose you might have wanted to find out why we did this, but since your attitude is - arrogant - in the extreme.... well, from me you will never have the information. We’ll give you thirty cured vampires - and you’d better live up to your end of the bargain!”

Ter was furious - not about the “quest”, but about the Masters’ throw-away attitude about “it” - the dragon, the poor abused dragon, done out of real life by the Masters’ own duplicity.

Vaer was in full agreement. “Should you even think to play us false - well, that won’t go well for you. No. That is not a threat.

“THAT is a promise.”

Yup. I suggest the Masters take a look - a SERIOUS look - into Veri's family....

Chapter 9: Terlinna

So, knowing which of the two of us was actually better at diplomacy, I sent Vaer to talk to Valerica and Serana about curing vampires. I figured I’d already worn out any good feelings either of them might have.

While Vaer was sweet-talking or whatever, I wrote a letter to the family. Probably more than time....

We hope all is well at home; since we haven’t heard anything to the contrary, we feel that’s a good sign.

Here is how things stand: the Masters finally got around to telling us what they want in exchange for releasing Durnehviir - and making it possible for him to die in truth, so he and Arngeir may go to Sovngarde together - they’ve chosen to require us to cure thirty vampires, assumedly before we grow old and die.

Vaer is just now talking to Valerica and Serana, being the diplomat of the two of us of course. I should tell you, the atmosphere here was - not just chill but icy - when Serana arrived and offered Valerica the cure....

In any case, we will be home before setting off on this.... part of the quest. We miss you all, and love you. Be well.

Ter and Vaer

....and walked out onto the strand by the old boat to find, obviously, a courier waiting. Shaking my head, I handed over the folded letter and the coin to get it to Morthal. Amazing. Simply amazing.

Vaer was waiting for me in the hall when I got back to the Castle. “Well, uh....”

I slanted a glance at him. “What then? Why are you acting like someone’s got you on a spit above a hot fire?”

I could see him gulp for breath. Hmmm. And then....

“Serana’s coming with us.”

Oh. Shit on a stick.

Heh. Yeah. *sigh* Well, it is what it is for now. I intended to leave her out - so she could write her own story. Apparently Serana doesn't want to go that direction.

Thanks!

Chapter10: Vaerlon

I could see the words ready to jump out of Ter’s mouth, so I hurried into speech. “She - uh - thinks it will be easier to discuss the cure with vampires if she talks first. I suppose - it can’t hurt?”

She rolled her eyes and sighed. “Well, she’ll have to come back with us to Morthal first, since I wrote the family we’d be back before starting on something that’s like to take us the rest of our lives. At least she has a horse....” She flounced off, grumbling something about getting me back....

And no doubt she would, eventually. I waited a while before edging into the camp (we’d decided not to go back into the Castle that night since we were all but packed and could just leave from camp), and she sent me a look that should have killed. Then some thought crossed her face and she leveled a sober glance at me.

“Vaer. You know that vampires have a - fascination - sort of ability, right?”

“Yes. But Serana’s not a vampire any more. And Valerica would just as soon kill you, me, and Serana right now....”

“Well, I’m just wondering if it’s something that doesn’t go away once the cure is done.”

“Oh. I don’t know. So you think I am willing for Serana to come along because I’ve fallen in love with her?”

“Are you?”

“No. In fact, she’s not one of my favorite people at all. She made the argument that she could mitigate the immediate intent of vampires to kill, and I agreed that we would let her try - even though she’s no longer a vampire herself, and logically is fair game for killing as well.”

“All right. We’ll see how it goes. I wonder what ma’s going to say.”

I sighed. “Probably about the same as you - and Valerica, who accused me of conning Serana into going with us for nefarious purposes of my own.”

She grinned ironically. “How does it feel to be the big bad wolf, brother-mine?”

“Not - precisely - comfortable, twin.” And that wasn’t the half of it.

Thanks Sis!

I find it interesting that you like the way "they" think, etc. I actually am not a twin, and don't have twins in the family in the last three generations, or the next two. So - I'm winging it....

Of course, four generations back, twins married twins - on all four sides of the family (leaving out the "married-ins") - and the generation before that, triplets married triplets. In my parents' generation, my dad married my mother, his older brother married her younger sister, and much later his oldest brother married her youngest sister.

It's practically incest. Some of my cousins are.... probably genetically closer than my sibs are.

Yeah. My friend in AU miscarried twins - they were.... about half-term. So they got names, and cremations, and they have a sort of shrine for them in the house. They had a boy before the twins, and a girl after. For them, the way they believe, the twins are still part of the family.

I was only about 5 to 6 weeks.. I have a tree planted every year in the Memorial Garden in New Port Richeys "children's" grave yard. One year a Pink Dogwood, the next a White Dogwood.

Every mother does what fits for her situation. There's no "one size for everyone" thing there. I like the tree planting myself.

True... so did I..

The Children's Garden now has 24 dogwood tree's, next year will just be a donation, that will go towards putting candles on every grave on their "birth"day.
