Chapter 14: Vaerlon

How strange. Serana seems - revolted by the reaction of the fledgling. Then again, I’d be revolted myself - no one should want to be.... adored.... because of what one is - or was. And there’s the kicker - Serana is no longer a vampire. It’s interesting that the Divines granted her the ongoing ability to use the Vampire Lord guise. Obviously, to me that means that what she - and we - are doing has the blessing of the Nine.

Oh yes - I still give Talos pride of place in our pantheon. I’m not like to change that any time in the future either. Now, I have friends among the elves. They aren’t Altmer though. And nor are my friends - friendly with Altmer. Those overweening, arrogant.... ach. I need to just not go there. I just need to.... mete out retribution. Eventually.

And now of course Ter is giving me the eye. No one asked me if I wanted to be a twin! Nah, then. I wouldn’t change it. But a bit of privacy in my thoughts would be - welcome.... Hmm. I should.... see if there’s a way to manage that, then, shouldn’t I? Yes. I should.

Well, regardless all that, we’re off toward High Gate now. Ter says there were tales of vampires in that area. Moving out of the swamps means dealing with the cold.

I wish I’d been born in Cyrodiil. At least I’d know what “warm” really meant....

Heh. Yep. Vaer is.... very much "in the moment". He's a "here and now" kind of guy. Ter is the opposite - she takes the long view, and the serious thoughtful overlooking of what happened, how, why - and what needs doing because of all of the above.

Together - they make one VERY impressive person. But they have to figure out that they are more together than they would ever be alone.

Chapter 15: Terlinna

Vaer’s starting to be - unhappy - about things that are honestly not what I call “fixable”. Like the Thalmor - now that’s just not something we can do much about. With the war over decades back now, and Ulfric defeated and killed, well - we do still have the Empire about, as well as the Thalmor and their spies and puppets. Presumably they’re fully aware that many Nords do still very deeply revere their longfather, and do still give him a place amongst the Divines.

I personally find it odd that no one ever wanted to take up Ulfric’s mantle - but perhaps it’s that no one else is quite as arrogant and pushy as he was. And gods forfend my brother decides it’s his to do! I might have to break his head at that point....

Eh, all that’s for another time. Right now, we need to see what’s to do at High Gate. It certainly would be handy if we had a map where the vampires were - like g’ma Verinne had for dragon burials. Well, we don’t. So we’ll just be doing this the hard way.

Nothing at all outside, which considering it was edging into fall was fairly logical - the wind off the Sea of Ghosts blew directly inland and lapped against the old ruin here; it’s damned cold! We tied the horses in a copse of trees out of the worst of the blow, and collected enough deadwood to have a fire once inside.

But inside were draugr we had to deal with first. And that made me wonder if we would find vampires at all - and how odd that draugr always reappeared in these old barrows no matter how often they were cleared! So eventually we’d killed all that were found between the entrance and the great door to the sanctum and decided to just set up camp there, leaving the sanctum for morning.

A fire was a nice luxury - I was cold, and Serana’s teeth were chattering. “Serana, if you have a cloak to wear you might be warmer.”

She shook her head and then rummaged in her gear pack. “I - forget things like that. Being a vampire even for the short time I was in the world, I didn’t feel the cold. So it’s a - retraining thing.”

I actually felt some pity for her - now, I wasn’t ever going to make a friend of her - but what was done to her.... well, it’s no wonder she sometimes seems “not there”. I did my best not to let pity show though - she was human again now, and most folk aren’t happy with others pitying them! I know how I feel about that sort of thing....

We ate the last of the sandwiches, Vaer took first watch; Serana and I settled to sleep.

Thanks neil! I find that the more I consider her - mental and emotional state (in the world I'm creating for her) the better I like her. And that's making her at least tolerable in game.... which is maybe odd, but *shrug*....

Very nice! I think a lot of an NPC's personality come from how we "take" them.. Like Marcurio.. people find his personality vastly different... Serana is like that, if you move your view point over 45 degree you see someone different.

I'd be unlikely to see her any other way if I was just dealing with her in game. Writing about her.... well, it's a change. Thanks Sis!

A cured fledgling.... thinks over options

I wasn’t sure I was truly no longer a vampire - until I thought about drinking blood. Which - turned my stomach - and nearly worse than that! So, then - I thought back over the choices the Volkihar Lord had said I would have.

Remain fully human - well, that would mean I’d age and die. I’m - not sure.... I want to do that. Get reinfected - and go back to the life I was living before this chance meeting with the Volkihar, which I have to admit was not a great life at all. Or - get reinfected, go to the Castle, and ask this Valerica to teach me to make synthesized blood so I no longer have to feed from humans.

Requires much thought I believe.... Before I go anywhere near a town I’d best find something different to wear.

Chapter 16: Some while later - The Twins

We are finding this - tedious in the extreme. We are also quite sure that it’s meant to be exactly that: most likely the Masters hope we will simply give up, and leave Durnehviir to his fate in the Cairn. We won’t be doing that however.

This is the eighth moon of our sojourn in search of vampires. In those moons, we have found many, spoken to some though others would do nothing but attack and therefore had to be put down, and offered the cure to a total of seventeen who let us speak and listened to us without attacking. Serana has been a help, though it’s gotten out somehow that she’s not truly a Lord, so her guise is less useful than at first. At this point she’s of more value explaining how the cure works, and the process of synthesizing blood, should a cured vampire later take reinfection over humanity.

We still do not know if the Masters will realize that it’s quite likely not all of these will stay cured. Or if they do, what will come of it....

We are mightily weary of this, as I suppose most would be by now. It’s time to take a few weeks, go home to Morthal, and talk things over.

The Masters are just Ass Clowns, plain and simple. The twins have to right of it, that the Masters want to string this out until the twins give up...which of course they wont! However, what new "conditions" will the Masters come up with if they get a wild hair? What influence do the gods have over the Masters, if any? I guess we'll see :)
