Thank you Lappy! Let me tell you, this particular tale has more kinks than a kinkajou - which might cause some folks to wonder.... since I'm supposedly writing it....

Some things never change. I think Valerica will die before she realizes there's a better way to live.

Chapter 21: Serana - and Melki

We took our meal out into the marsh to eat, away from everyone. I was glad to see Melki again - he treated me as if I was.... a normal woman, instead of a “cured Volkihar, a former Daughter of Coldharbour”.

“What have you been doing while we’ve been chasing vampires, Melki?” He went so red over his cheeks I thought he might go up in flames. “Ah - a woman?”

He got even redder. “I’ve - been building a house. I.... hope to have a woman one of these days.... you.” He cast his eyes down to the ground.

I tried to keep my mouth from falling open making me look like a fish out of water. “Melki. Are you - wanting me to wed you?” This was something so like to a bolt of lightning on a clear day that I wasn’t even sure what I should say.

He raised his eyes, intensely blue, to mine - and that intensity seemed to stem from his feelings as well. He cupped my cheek with a hand, and finally whispered “If you could want me.... then yes.”

I felt a tear run down my face. I’d sometimes thought that having someone love me, and to return that love myself, would be a delight that I’d never have as a vampire. I just - wasn’t sure that I knew how to love.

“Melki, I don’t know if I know what love is. And if not, how should I say you aye, if I can’t love you enough? That would be - criminal. It would hurt you - and me too.”

He smiled a bit sadly. “Well, I think I probably have enough love for both of us. There’s time yet - you’ve all this curing to finish.... I’m not asking you to say aye or nay right now. But I wanted you to know.... what I’m thinking.”

And then he went back to his meal, dropping the subject - which was kind of him since I was so thrown off stride! We finished our steaks with potatoes and leeks, talking of commonplaces - and idiot jarls! As we stood to return to Morthal, I placed a hand on his arm.

“I will give you an answer as soon as - I know what it is. I’m.... in real years, very young. I know virtually nothing about men and women together. And there’s this fact - that the business with curing vampires will likely last my life long. Can you think to deal with that?”

Melki grinned. “Ah, sure I can. Must be a way I can help you with it. Strong back weak brain I think....”

“No. If you’re building a house, you must have a good brain as well as the strong back. The brain would likely be of more help with curing vampires though!” So we walked back into Morthal without discussing it further. I desperately needed to talk to someone - female....

Melki's a - good, solid Nord. He can fight for himself, his family, his hold - but he brings home orphans all the time.... kittens, pups, foxes, birds.... No wolves or bears yet....

So falling for Serana might have surprised him - but it didn't surprise his sibs or his da or Veri.

Thanks Sis!

You go Melki! Good for him, and good for Seana, if she'll give it a chance...I think :)
I really like these "inter personal interludes;" they bring depth to the story and make it all the more real, and relatable. Good stuff!

Thanks Lappy and Kane! My thought process is getting to know these people - and that requires "seeing" them interact....

Chapter 22: Vaerlon - Dealing with the Volkihar seems to be next

So Ter and I met up at day-meal with ma and da and g’ma Veri, to ask for their thoughts about the half-dozen Volkihar supposedly ensconced in Movarth’s Lair. Before long, Serana came in and settled with a mug of kaffe next to g’ma Veri.

Da shook his head after I said I thought we should just go in there and wipe them out. “Vaer, they’re not ‘just’ vampires.” Out of the corner of my eye I saw Serana nod but then grimace. Hmmm. Have to talk to her later I guess.

“What then, da? It’s not like we can negotiate with them. We - this family - killed their ruler, who they thought was going to hand them lights out forever so they could do whatever they willed with humans. They apparently didn’t believe either Valerica or Serana about what that damned ‘prophecy’ would actually do.”

Ter shrugged. “Problem is, if we kill this batch, there’ll just be more. Serana, how many actual Volkihar are there, do you know?”

“From what Valerica said before I left the Castle, not more than two hundred. And perhaps not that many. Verinne, the Dawnguard and I killed about twenty all told to get to Harkon - that includes the ones who ambushed us thrice, the ones she killed in Dimhollow before releasing me, and those in the Castle. That’s still too many - you don’t want them showing up here all the time trying to kill you, after all.”

“Not to mention that should we kill them all, Bal will then try to wipe us off the face of Nirn! Again!” ma exclaimed.

I could see their points. But still. “Well, what do you think we should do then? We can’t let them stay in the Lair....”

Serana looked up from her mug. “I’ll go talk to them. Maybe I can send them to Valerica.”

Alarmed, g’ma Veri said “I don’t think that’s a very good idea, Serana!”

“What, me talking to them, or sending them to the Castle?”

“Both. After all, you have no protection from being bitten.... and you also are now human, not undead. I - doubt that Valerica would be happy to have half-a-dozen other Volkihar show up on her doorstep as well. While she’s - ambivalent - about your cure, she seems to be fine with the fact that you and I stopped Harkon; the Volkihar remaining are unlikely to be so sanguine.”

Da sighed. “I’ve got a court - as usual. Let’s revisit this at night-meal. There has to be something we’re missing. Think it over.”

So we finished eating, and went our separate ways for the day. Ter had an odd look on her face - I wondered....

Thank you Kane! You know.... I - extrapolate this from the stuff that DIDN'T happen in my family. Which I suppose might be a totally backwards way of seeing it....

Works for me though....

And the really funny thing is that every time I think I'm done with this family.... they just jump up and say "NO!"

That is a head scratcher for sure. I'm not in favor of Serana going to the lair, unless it is with a big party to back her up...but then the vamps would probably attack on sight in shear self defense! Hmmm, I wonder if Valerica would go with Serana to the lair and find out just what can be done about this situation. It's a long shot, but you never know with Valerica!
