Has anyone ever mixed mods from STEAM with ones from NEXUS?

O.K., I admit I'm lazy, so I have always taken the easy route for mods on PC, and just gotten them through STEAM.

Now, there are a few large quest/location mods that I want to try that are either not available on STEAM, or are simply too big for me to download. In particular, is Skyrim Beyond Bruma.

If I have my buddy download them for me, then manually install them on top of my STEAM files, am I gonna break my game?

I realize the conventional wisdom is to just start over with everything from NEXUS, but I've got a character at level 62, that I would like to continue in the new areas. I have a niggly feeling on the back of my neck, that if I nuke my current install, then duplicate my mod list from NEXUS, then try to load an old save, it's going to blow up in my face!

Looking for some advice from some of the more experienced modders here! :thumb:

Oook.... I don't know about that one. I.... don't bother with steam, invasive POS that it is. I play skyrim "through" steam - offline. Period.

There's probably no mods on steam that aren't also available on nexus. I don't use anything BUT nexus for downloads....

Now first off I never add mod's after a certain point, technically it shouldn't matter as long as their wasn't a conflict that would have happened in the 1st place.

The majority of my mod's are from Nexus, but I have a few from Steam and some from L.L. and Hall of Torc and Alien Sloth's site ( which I don't remember the name of atm...) errr and one or two others..<cough> Assassin's Creed armor ( Dang I love it and have not found the right character for them)

Ummmm well anyway, depending on you Mod Manager, is how your add mod's to them.. I could only say for NMM as that's what I use. But like Sere, I play through Steam, off-line....

Eh, yeah. I don't use a mod manager at all any more. I manually install everything.... I don't - um - trust NMM any more (WAY too long a story), and MO is just.... well... damn. I'm not a dummy okay - as far as software goes.... but MO.... it doesn't even have decent instructions.... I've never seen such a hobgoblin's conglomerate of crap for "docs"....

Figuring out how to use MO is the reason I stopped using MO... which at the time was working better than NMM.. now, I just use NMM with LOOT, Wyre bash and SkyProc ( for Dual Sheath Redux)

I don't even use wryebash. Manual and LOOT manage just fine.

Eh, now. That doesn't address the question Vols. And for me, sorry - I don't have an answer for you. Other than that I wouldn't ever bother with steam period.

huh, I gave the best answer I could.. I use some Steam mod's with my NMM ones... no problems except they update themselves at their own accord ( I have that turned off )

Eh yeah. That would be my main "I'm NOT GOING THERE" issue with steam. Nopenopenope - NO ONE updates stuff on my machine without my express permission. Period.

That includes microsoft.

O.K., so it sounds like it's possible at least.

Next go around, I plan to do a clean install, and start over with all my mods from NEXUS. Since I plan to mode Oblivion as well, I suspect I'll be learning Wrye bash as well!

That's for the future. For now, I think I'll finish the rest of the stuff I have to do in this play through, then when I'm to a point where I could move on, I'm going to try a manual install of Skyrim Beyond Bruma, and see what happens. It looks like a simple procedure, just drop the files into the Skyrim directory, and activate them.

What could possible go wrong?

:lmao:

Well, not a lot really. I manually install everything now - since I started playing with LotD as my main focus. Now, the LotD team will say a manual install isn't recommended - but I have had far fewer issues with manual than with NMM for sure.

Once v19 is out, and all the supported mods/patches are updated, I'll have daughter get all that for me plus BS: Bruma and Vigilant. I plan to manually install all of that, and then probably won't see the light of day for months.....

The one thing you MUST DO with manual install is read every bit of info on installation for every mod you add. In general, LOOT can be counted upon to make things work right - but there are possible issues. I read all the install instructions probably a dozen times or more - for EVERY mod. It's way too easy to miss something - and that might be something crucial.

I'm definitely learning that from reading about the whole process! A mod where you have to go in a tweak a lot of parameters in the .ini files or something, I wouldn't be comfortable with right now. The ones where you just drop a file in and let it run, I think I can handle.

I was looking at the Beyond Bruma instructions, and even the part about enabling the memory patch in SKSE had me scratching my head a bit! :$

AFAIK, the last/latest version of SKSE has the mem patch already set up in the .ini file. At least, I didn't do anything with it to run LotD - of course, my machine is pretty hefty, so that might make a difference. LotD team recommends ENBoost as well - and I'm not running it, and having no issues. That might change with v19 and BS:Bruma. We'll see.

Yep. Steam can DIAF - as long as Beth does something about making it so I can still play Skyrim....

Maybe it will be DRM free on GoG at some point. I'd buy it again if it were.
