Thanks Sis! Yep.... Serana's a LOT older - and yes she was shut away for thousands of years - but before that, I like to think she got "lessoned" in ruling.... even if Harkon wasn't exactly a prize - as a parent or anything else! |

The High King getting "life lessons" from a vampire :thumb: Sometimes you need a "friendly" reminder/nudge to get oneself out of a habitual routine! |

Seventeen: Yes, a very stolid Nord Melkioran allowed the captain to precede him. He was an older man, with a full dark beard and thick head of hair, both liberally streaked with silver. Tiercel addressed him, “Captain Ten-Hooks the Younger, you know the family. This is our friend Serana.” He looked quickly at me, then back to Tiercel and Vartain. “Yon Serana - she’s yer vampire friend, yes?” I wondered how he knew that, but supposed with all the fuss over everything it would have been difficult to keep it quiet. Vartain grinned. “Aye. In order to be rid of the taint and curse, she needs passage to Solstheim, to take counsel with the Daedric Princes at the shrines there. We’re happy to loan her the Mistress, but of course she can’t sail it.” “Aye.” He turned directly to me then. “So, ye can warrant ye’ll not be after my blood?” I stood and faced him directly. “I can, good sir. I have a concoction that I make myself from herbs and other ingredients; it is a sort of false-blood, which keeps me fed very well. I have lately come back to Skyrim from Bruma in Cyrodiil, where I did some background work on removing the curse under which I live; while there, the only sustenance I needed all those moons was the false-blood. I will not molest you for yours!” He looked around at the gathered family members. Var, Tier, and Veri stood and moved beside me. “We guarantee that you will be safe while Serana is aboard the boat and at large in Solstheim. While there, it is likely she will be rid of the taint. So that when she returns to Skyrim aboard the Mistress, she will be fully human again.” “Well, then. I see no reason to cavil at giving her passage.” He turned back to me. “When did ye think to leave?” “Not tomorrow, but the day after I think. Assuming you feel the weather will hold.” “M’ weather-bone be not actin’ up, so aye then. Day after t’morrow will do me.” He saluted the family, bowed a bit, and walked out the door. I had to forcibly close my mouth. “He’s.... probably the only person in Skyrim outside of this family who doesn’t seem to be very worried!” Melki grinned. “Most likely! He’s phlegmatic in the extreme.” Nodding, Vartain said, “He’s a very good captain, better than his da I think. He’s - calm. Nothing bothers him.” Tiercel raised her brows. “AND he can swim!” Edited by Serethil, Nov 12 2017, 08:21 PM.

Thank you Sis! Yep, Tier can't ever keep from bringing up the past. At least this time it was joking, even if true!

:teehee: Who says you can't teach an old king new tricks. 'Tisn't surprising that the Cap'n is a good man. The Ravenwings always seem to know the right people to hire. |

Eighteen: As a calm voyage, well.... it wasn’t No, wasn’t anything to do with me being a vampire and Captain Ten-Hooks having a change of heart. It started with bad weather which went to worse, and finished with an attempt by pirates to board us. Let’s start at the beginning though. For some reason, unknown to any but himself, Tiercel’s brother Melkioran decided to come along - to smooth things over in Solstheim, he said. Tier arched her brows, Var frowned and then smiled, and I just said “Your company will be welcome.” Which was the truth, full on. So we boarded, stowed gear, put up the horses, and I started trying to get comfortable on a floor that moved constantly. Not so simple, that.... First, the weather was just plain unsettled, and the Captain spent some time apologizing that his weather-bone had so misled him! Well, I wasn’t about to blame the man, and Melki knew this sort of thing of old, so he wasn’t worried. And he pointed out to me that in order to keep “an even keel” as he put it, I should watch the horizon ahead of the ship which would mean I’d not be dealing with vertigo. And then.... the pirates. Past Windhelm in the open sea between some islets that seemed nothing more than rocks thrust up from the surface of the ocean, suddenly a dark ship, larger than the Mistress, loomed up to the rear, and set a course to cut us off. Now, this was a problem. Melki grabbed my hand, settled me at the rudder or tiller or whatever it is, and showed me how to hold it straight. That done, he leaped for the masts and started doing something with sails - to gain more speed perhaps. The Captain was manning the wheel, and as Melki threw on more sail, we began to pick up speed and distance on the pirate ship. It never caught us, but it never turned back either. So, an eight-hour sail on a normal day turned into a six-hour race against pirates. As we hove to in the small harbor north of Raven Rock, both Melki and Captain Ten-Hooks stood watching the other ship stand off to sea but obviously anchor. “Ten-Hooks, this is not a good thing. You go into Raven Rock and talk to Arano, whichever one’s in charge this year. Explain about the pirates, don’t mention Serana, just tell him or her that you’ve brought me over to see to something at the house by the Shrines, and I’m out here keeping watch.” “Aye, lord. It’s a good plan. I’ll see if I can get some guards belike.” So he went off, leaving us to keep watch. “This is very strange. Pirates will normally follow a while, but if you anchor on Solstheim, they’ll head back to their usual berths. I’ve never seen this sort of thing before! Oh, if Ten-Hooks brings guards back, you’d best sneak into the wood there before they get here - because we certainly trust you, but it’s likely the Redoran Guard won’t.” “That had occurred to me. I’ll pack my kit, and I believe just go to ground there now. At least it’s dim here - I suppose due to the ash?” “Yes. The damn mountain is still belching - years and years gone now!” So I moved BannDar and my gear into the lovely deep wood that clothed the flank of the mountain nearby, and settled to sleep a bit. Such alarums! Talking to the Princes would seem anticlimactic I thought. Or I hoped.... I woke before dawn to find Melkioran huddled next to me, his own horse beside mine. He mimed “quiet”, so I knew we might be heard if we spoke. He handed me sacks to muffle hooves, much like I had used in Bruma; I quickly strapped them on BannDar. Once he’d done his own horse, he moved ahead of me, leading into much deeper woodland. We made as little noise as possible for an hour, then broke out of the wood onto a well-worn trail. “So. The Captain brought back an entire platoon of Redoran Guard. They think to set a trap for the Black Mask - they’ve had much trouble the last year with these pirates and that ship. Ten-Hooks told them I’d gone on to the house; he got back before they arrived, so I cleared out. But that was why all the cloak-and-dagger silence; didn’t want them to hear us at all!” “Well, I hope the Captain and the Mistress will come through unscathed!” With that we headed up the trail to the house below the Shrines. |

Nice Sere! I just started Dawnguard last night, only my second time doing this questline. Getting along fine with Serana, but I'd forgotten how seriously sucky Harkon and clan are ;) |
