Chapter 3 - Of all the strangenesses.... ....this bid fair to take the prize: I greet you, Serana Volkihar-Ravenwing. You do not know me, but I know much of you, all of it to the good. I am aware that you are not blessed with the Voice; that is neither here nor there as you will see. I would like very much to discuss - things - with you. The tales of your meetings with dragons and Greybeards, among other stories, mean that there is more to you than folk have thought, who only considered a cured vampire. Please come to me at High Hrothgar at your convenience. I... think.... we have much to discuss. The fate of Skyrim - perhaps all of Tamriel - is balanced on a thread. Heed your son. And come to me soon. Serana finished the reading. And stood staring at the parchment. Her heart gave a huge thump, and she looked up at the others. “I.... don’t know who she is. But with what Tad’s said to us.... Skyrim is in deep trouble....” Var grinned - the feral Nord baring of teeth just before attack. “Fine. Tier....” “Hmph. I’ll pack - otherwise it’s a balls-up. YOU go haul the carriage out of mothballs, and....” “I know I know - tell whoever I’m not available - and nor are you! - for some time. Anything specific you think we ought to bring along, Serana?” She was staring into some otherwhere, they could see. Finally, as Tadric walked into the room then wrapped an arm around her.... “Yes. Bring Merin. She’s - somehow... part of this.” |

Chapter 4 - A few points of order: Interlude [Just a bit of background here.....] Merin is Var and Tier’s adopted granddaughter - her parents died in a very cold winter caught away from home (Windstad Manor that they had leased) and the hirelings brought Merin into Morthal to the Jarl (Tiercel of course). Tier took the baby in (about 6 months old at that point) and subsequently Merin made the rounds of the daughters and daughters-in-law - whoever had milk. Eventually, Merin spent most of her time with Verilinne, Var and Tier’s youngest daughter who adopted her. Serana, not ever thinking of herself as “fey”, in her later years after being a wife and so much motherhood, has now come to realize that she knows things. So Tadric comes by his mysticism now from both sides. In this generation, he’s the only Ravenwing with any of Idgrod’s fey abilities. Idgrod the Younger’s grandchildren are very young so it’s unknown at this time whether any of them will show that mystic bent. Joric.... left home a very long time ago. Letters for a few years showed that he traveled widely. No letters have come for many many years now. Var and Tier think he’s long dead. Tadric.... isn’t so sure. |

Interesting... One thing is certain though... My hat's off to you for keeping all of that straight when you write the story! :) |

Thanks.... you know.... There's something really strange about the Morthal family. It's as if.... I'm part of them, so I KNOW. In this case. truly I am the family scribe. The very first time I happened onto Morthal in the game, the VERY first time.... back in 2011.... I was home. |

Chapter 5 - Well.... this is.... interesting.... The trip to Ivarstead and up the Seven Thousand Steps was notable only because the weather was - much worse than whatever “normal” was. It actually took almost a full day for them to get up to High Hrothgar, and they were cold to the bone and completely exhausted once they entered the monastery. “I am Gelvan. The Master wishes you to wash, eat, and rest. She will see you in the morning after you have recovered.” The young Nord bowed to them, then motioned them into the living quarters - newly refurbished it seemed. There was of all things - a bath. With water running hot into it. And after all had warmed themselves and were clean, there was a table full of good food - nothing like the spartan rations some remembered. They ate, then chose sleep over questions. The trek had been.... very wearing. As she fell into sleep, though.... Tier warned herself to be wary. Things were - odd. And not everything was exactly what it seemed. |

Chapter 6: No one quite knows what to think After a light morning meal, they followed Gelvan into the main room of the monastery. A woman waited there, neither tall nor short, neither young nor old, neither ugly nor beautiful. She was garbed in Greybeard robes though her head was bare of the hood. She wore some sort of amulet or charm about her neck, but no rings on her long slender fingers. Her hair was golden, and braided - and very long: the braid trailed far down her back. Var and Tier bowed slightly; Serana and Melki nodded. Merin just looked at the woman, then opened her mouth and Shouted. That was a cat among the pigeons moment! The others stood looking at her with jaws dropped. “Ah. I see now. Well, then. First, allow me to introduce myself. I am scion of both Gormlaith Golden-Hilt and Felldir the Old. Gormlaith left my many times great-grandsire just a child when she died under Alduin’s breath-attack at the summit of Monahven ; and Felldir’s son was my many times great-granddam’s father. I have known the Voice all my life, but could not before come here to join the Greybeards. And now of course, they are no more at all. So I have taken the Mastership myself, as it seems there is one other only who can use the Thu’um. “I did not know why I needed to write to you, Serana Volkihar-Ravenwing. But now all is clear. These others with you, who are they?” Serana glanced at Var and Tier, then shrugged and introduced them. “This gentleman is Vartain, Skyrim’s High King for many years now. This lady is his wife, Tiercel Ravenwing. This is my husband Melkioran Ravenwing. And....” She was preempted by Merin, who stepped forward, bowed a bit, and stated “I am Merin Arrowswift. My parents rented property of the Ravenwings, and died in bad weather when I was but a few months old. The daughter of the High King and his wife adopted me. I have always known how to Shout, though I have not used the Power prior to today.” Some strange expression crossed the face of the woman, but then she said calmly, “I am Master Vridda. It seems.... we have much to discuss.” Tier felt a dagger of ice trace her spine; glancing at Serana, she thought that her sister in law was - disturbed - as well. |
