When people speak without knowing who they are speaking to, it can often be highly amusing... as in this case. :D

Ivarstead would have been better of without that milk drinker, methinks.

Oh, not a doubt of that! Thanks Kane!

[And that reminds me of an amusing thing that happens once in a while: sometimes when one of the "race named" ambushers happens, after the kill when you're looting, you'll sometimes find a Jug of Milk!]

Really? I can't recall that ever happening, but it would be humorous!

Chapter 13: As hospitality goes, it wasn’t

The steward bowed them into the Hall. Fastgund sat like a loathsome spider in a throne-chair that made the one Var used look like a toy. Fastgund’s lady sat in one only slightly smaller; her face was pinched into an expression of smelling something a dog left behind on her shoes.

Fastgund stared down at Var and Tier, then allowed his eyes to wander over the rest of the group. “So, what brings such a motley group to Ivarstead?”

Tier grasped Var’s arm, while Melki stepped forward. “Perhaps I’d better make introductions: before you stand Vartain Longsighted, High King of Skyrim and his wife, Tiercel Ravenwing the current Jarl of Hjaalmarch. She is my sister; this is my wife Serana, and our son Tadric; this lady is Merin Arrowswift, adopted daughter of Tier and Var’s youngest daughter Verilinne and her husband, Morkan.”

“You expect us to believe the High King and his Queen would be traipsing around the countryside in a carriage with supposed family, and no guards at all?”

Var drew himself up, and not being short, that made quite a difference in his ability to be as overbearing as needed. “Fastgund of Ivarstead, I would suggest you shut your mouth before it lands you in Solitude’s prison cells. You may chose to be as snidely incompetent as you like, but I don’t have to stand still for it. And in fact, I - we - will not be staying any longer to listen to your tripe.

“If I were you, I would hope that the High King has regained his temper by the time he's back at the Blue Palace - because if he hasn’t, it's quite likely you'll be arrested, and Ivarstead will be looking for a new Jarl.”

With that, he wheeled and strode out of the Hall, sweeping the rest along with him. Outside, they remounted the carriage, Tad climbed back into Vinthar’s saddle, and they headed out the road toward Whiterun.

Tier sighed. “It will be late getting to Whiterun, but at least we’ll have beds with the twins!”

“Yes. And we’ll have to talk all this over with them too. This business with Fastgund is - very strange.”

Serana nodded. “I got the same feeling from him that I did from “the new master.”

Tad rode up alongside and agreed. “They’re two peas in a pod. It’s not a good thing at all....”

It was very late before they made Whiterun. The twins rushed them off to bed, putting conversation off until all were fully rested. “Nah then, Ma - after a meal in the morning is soon enough!”

Thank you neil! Some folks don't seem to know when to stop, y'know? And I don't mean Var and Tier.... heh.

I'm glad they made it to Whiterun. I was nervous while they were all in The Rift.

Chapter 14: And after a good meal, and a lot of discussion....

There really wasn’t a consensus. Var wanted to clap Fastgund in irons, but Vaer just shook his head. “Can’t do it pa. He’s within his rights even if he was being a slime-worm about it.” Ter nodded agreement, and Tiercel flumphed down on a soft-filled couch, annoyed.

“Slime-worm. Appropriate. The wife is that bad too I think. Ah well, with a little luck whatever is hanging over us will take them both off with it!”

They went on to discuss the “new master”. That was far more concerning really. Every one of them who’d met her thought there was something major going on, something very wrong. And then Tad said, “Yes, and ma and I had the same feeling about it: that the new master and Fastgund have much in common.”

Vaer sat up straighter. “What do you mean, Tad?”

“We - just have some ill-feelings about them.”

Serana nodded. “It’s as if they’re in concert to ruin Skyrim - that’s the only way I can say it. And with Tad feeling so much hanging over us all....”

Tad at that point repeated what the dragon-shade had said.

Ter went pale. “So.... you all really think Alduin - is returning? How can that be?”

Serana shook her head. “We.... just don’t know. And after the shades of Arngeir and the rest deciding that we’d best meet in Valerica’s study from now on.... Well, it’s sounding.... dire.....”

Gloomy silence settled over the group.

Thanks Sis! Yup - just right now, they can feel their world endangered. And they don't know what to do about it. Yet.
