Chapter 15: ....they head for Morthal, Ter going along as well.

The consensus was that Vaer had best keep Whiterun together while Ter went along with Melki and Merin, heading directly for Volkihar Castle. Var was going to need to move between Morthal and Solitude to keep a finger on various pulses; Tier needed to stay in Morthal since she was the Jarl; and Tad was going to go to Solstheim with Serana. After the lengthy discussion, that seemed the best division of those involved.

They arrived home the next day, and unpacking, laundering, checking up on things in Hjaalmarch and Haafingar, then repacking what each group would likely need took the next few days. The evening before each group left, Var returned to Morthal, and joined the families at dinner.

“Well, it seems no word has yet spread that there’s anything on the winds. This is a very good thing; I’m - not really diplomatic enough any more to squash rumors quietly! Tier, have you heard anything?”

“No. And I do find that - passing odd.”

Serana nodded firmly. “I too. I’ve had word with various of my contacts (by this she meant those vampires who had taken her gift of the method for the cure), not asking specifics, but just conversing. Nothing unusual has cropped up, clear to Bruma.”

Tad and Melki shook their heads in turn, then reported no rumors of anything out of the ordinary among the locals, the miners, the guards.

Ter stated, “Whiterun is quiet as well. It was calm before you all arrived, and I had a courier with a letter this morning: Vaer hasn’t heard a thing about anything. I do find that suspect....”

Var frowned. “Unless - that’s the point? The quieter whoever is keeping it, the more likely that it will be less than a war when they get round to doing whatever it is they have in mind.”

“Good thought love. I do wish we knew more of who ‘they’ are than just “the Master” and that git in Ivarstead though.” Tier frowned in turn. “Melki, Merin, Ter: the first thing we probably need is to tell Valerica the entire thing and see if she has any knowledge to add. I’m aware she doesn’t get out to talk to folk, so won’t have heard local rumors that way; but it’s likely she still has contacts similar to yours, Serana?”

“Yes. And she has managed to hire some guards and her own gatherers of plants and so on - people who seem to be trustworthy; at the very least they appear to have no fear of her. Then again, the fact of the false-blood potion has become common knowledge. The Dawnguard now find very few of the ancient clans routinely use human blood now.

“And.... there’s a thought. Tad, instead of going with me to start, maybe you’d better check with Beltan to see if they’ve heard anything.”

“No Ma. Da should do that before he goes to the Castle. I know - you’re going to need me.”

Somehow the Ravenwing's always end up in my favorite places. Morthal and the marshes are always lovely, and I adore Solstheim.

Chapter 16: Man proposes - others dispose....

Melki headed for Fort Dawnguard the next morning, while everyone else but Var and Tier also left for their assigned destinations. His leave-taking of his adored wife was long, loving, and intense. He knew he’d not see most of his family for some time; but as long as they all came through this intact.... No - there was no guarantee of it. But he called with all his soul on the Divines and those of the Daedric princes who were considered - at least favorable, if not actually friendly - to humankind. Nords anyway.... ‘We’re all Nords. Help us - please help us. We don’t - know - what’s toward here....’ He couldn’t be any more articulate than that.

It wasn’t a short trip. And he wasn’t young. So before he went very far, he hauled up in Whiterun.

“Vaer. I need to get to Fort Dawnguard soonest. And, y’know, I’m not as hale as I was back before you twain were birthed. I’d appreciate...”

Vaer cut his uncle off with a hand-wave. “Nah. Don’t even say it. Shunvar can give you a carriage and driver; they can wait for you then take you on wherever. And do NOT go on about either thanks or how you shouldn’t need help. We’re family. We do what’s needed. We’re all going to need help I think....”

Melki grinned - though it was with a grim cast. Yes, likely all would be needing a lot of help before it was all over.

“So, Vaer.... do you think this is really the end times, and Alduin is here to eat the world for true this time?”

“Uncle, I don’t know. But what I do know is - I’m done with letting whoever thinks they’re running the world’s beginnings and endings do as they wish.”

Melki reached out to clasp arms with his nephew. “I’m glad to hear it. It’s time we sent the old ways - somewhere else.”

Morning found Melki heading comfortably to Falkreath Hold, in a well-padded carriage, with Rogan tied behind. While he was less achy body-wise, relative indolence meant his mind had too much time to agonize.

Chapter 17: The Goddesses put their heads together

Serana settled calmly to the bench between the two shrines, waiting with patience for the notice of the Princes. While she sat, she gazed out over Solstheim toward the shoreline of Skyrim. She’d wanted nothing more than to live her life and love her family, and eventually make the voyage to Sovngarde. Somehow, all that seemed - unlikely to happen now.

Azura’s voice, twinned with Meridia’s, laughed. “But daughter - you cannot see all. Nor, as it happens, can we. We have watched, and we have heard what is in your mind, your heart, your soul. We have listened to the dragon-soul and the Greybeard-soul - we think we are current on most parts of this conundrum.

“We do agree that this ‘master’, and that so-aptly-called ‘git’ in Ivarstead, are problems. It will likely fall to you and your family to deal with them. That includes the girl Merin.”

Serana wondered about that. “Is that because Merin is Dragonborn, or because she and Tad are likely to make a marriage? Or both?”

The laughter was doubled as the words. “Oh - both, of course! Now, be of good cheer. Nothing is certain in Tamriel - but of all who could deal with this crisis, those of your family are best equipped to prevail. Take our blessings with you to your family. And after this is done, send your youngest to us. We wish to meet him formally. Merin should accompany him....” And they disappeared from her cognizance.

Serana headed groundward slowly. She had much - MUCH - to consider.
