Chapter 21: Enough discussion already!

They were all a bit unsettled by the fact that no matter how much they talked over the bits, they were getting no closer to anything workable - neither a solution, nor even a working premise. Without some sort of motive impetus, they all felt that they’d be hither and yon across Skyrim to no purpose.

Eventually though, Tad stood up and said firmly “Now look. We have to do something. We’ve spent days hashing this over. None of us has any idea really how to go on, or even where to go first! We’re spinning wheels here.”

Melki looked over at Serana, then at his youngest child. Child no more.... “Well then, what think you?”

“Merin and I are going to trek around the word walls I didn’t get to earlier. That may give us some further information, thoughts, or input. And.... well, she needs to find out if she can learn from the walls....”

Merin nodded. “I have no doubt I can. But as for souls to unlock the shouts.... I - ah - don’t really want to be killing dragons, you know!”

Something niggled at Tier’s mind, but knowing how that sort of thing worked, she chose not to follow a wild hare. It would jump into her conscious mind when it was ready, and hopefully at that point would be a full-blown option, not just a stray thought.

Melki and Serana smiled at each other, over Tad’s and Merin’s heads. Melki took her hand, and turned to Var and Tier. “Well, we’re going to go spy on that git in Ivarstead, and the “master” at the monastery. If they’re truly up to something, they’ll either have visitors, or go to meet someone.”

Var nodded shortly. “We’re going home. It’s best if we keep things on an even keel I think. We’ll hope no one will think anything’s out of the ordinary. Ter....”

“No Da. I’m going with Valerica.”

That caused a beat of silence so heavy it could be felt as a thump in every heart. Everyone looked anywhere but at Ter and Valerica.

Eh, sorry - I've just not felt well for so long now, it's hard to get back to it.... Got to take little bites of that apple to start with. Thanks Lap!

Nope it's fine. I have been a bit embarrassed about how long these tales have sat - but wow, when I can't breathe or think, it's a HUGE problem!

Chapter 22: Really....

Var looked at his eldest daughter. “Oh, and why might that be?”

Valerica stepped forward. “Vartain, I appreciate your - everyone’s - willingness to.... accept me as I am now. However - I believe it is time to - follow Serana’s rede. So I am going into Cyrodiil to forge the cure. Terlinna is coming with me as a - protector - I think you might say. I never learned anything of the weapon-arts. Certainly I carry a poniard - but I’ve never used it. And.... I find spells to infect or kill... increasingly repugnant. Even the taste of the false-blood is turning my stomach. I believe it is time.”

Serana stepped to her mother and hugged her hard. “You are in good hands then, Mother. Be safe, both of you. Ter, do you need a map to where I stayed when I went to Bruma?”

“Aye, I do, Lady. I’ll probably have to turf out brigands, but that’s not a real problem.”

“Come to the library then, I’ll draw one up.” They left the group, who one and all seemed tongue-tied.

Finally Var said calmly, “Well then. Shall we plan to meet here again in say, three moons?”

Nods all around, and then they went off to their rooms, to pack and then to get what sleep they could.

Serana drew a sketch-map for Ter, then glanced at her. “I appreciate you - taking this on. I’m not sure what changed her mind, she’s been so bent on.... remaining - dead - forever.”

“I think you did - and your life after undeath: you and your happiness with Uncle Mel, and your children. Sometimes, it takes longer than you would like for someone to accept that a course of action is the right one.”

“How did you get so wise, no older than you are?” Serana asked wryly.

“Watching Ma and Da of course. It’s a benefit you never had, but you’ve done the same for your brood, haven’t you?”

Serana smiled, then teared up. Ter gave her a little hug, and whispered “I just hope if I ever fall in love and marry, I’ll be as good at all of it as you and Ma are! Now, it’s off to bed.”

Serana wiped her eyes, sniffed, nodded, and did just that. Terlinna followed, a slight frown on her face. She needed to get a real list together - she and Valerica needed all the help they could get, and she was the only one likely to be able to provide it. Valerica would have all she could do to find and process the ingredients, then manufacture the curative.

A stop in Whiterun seemed logical.

Thank you Lap! Yep, I didn't really see it either - until I was writing the end of the previous chapter. And then, I've been so sick, while I knew what I wanted to do, I couldn't even get the words in file....
