Areial suggested a forum for the Writer's Craft - that is, links to self-publishing information and sites; links to book-cover sites and tools; to marketing strategy articles. In other words, a topic devoted to the nuts and bolts of getting books published.

So, we're off!

Do you want me to move those into one of the reserved posts? Hmm. I bet you can't edit those posts can you? Might have to get with Kane about that.

I think it's an Admin and Moderator function that we can edit posts... I have done so, but very rarely and made sure that it said that I had.

Okay - as a point of order: Canva doesn't support Pale Moon. I'll have to download the updated FF so I can use it *SIGH*.

Nope. I think I'll just download Chrome instead. /grrrrr

5 steps to self publishing
This is from Book-Baby through Amazon, which may be the way I am going to go. It's the place I am leaning toward.. but I have more places to check and won't really decide until I have looked into many options..

Plus I need to get my "prologue" and the synopsis written.. and decide on a cover.

Edit: it's a 62 page download PDF.. but worth the read.. some is ok info.. some is great info..

Why don't you edit that into the second link post, since it's not covers?

I actually meant Amazon book's not necessarily BookBaby, which is a paid service all around.

Yeah. I've looked at several paid services, but most of them are prohibitive either cost-wise or restriction-wise. I'll be going with amazon to begin with, then see where we go on from there to cover other e-reader formats.

Can Amazon Self-Publishing make you money?

This is a short article, but hit's many of the main themes needed for self-publishing and has a couple links to other articles that are just as short, but informative in their own way.. and lead to other articles that.. yeah you can see how that's going.. it is a good thing!

Yep.. I'm debating on which is the best service through Amazon, but also looking at LuLu and other places.. just because it's always good to look.

My next step is to actually look at some of the book's on Amazon and see what their thumb-nails and cover's look like, which are eye catching.. etc.. While I am figuring out the Prologue and Synopsis.

One of the articles I read said that a detailed "glossary" would go a long way to explain "new world" creatures or even changes to people, places or events.

So that is what I worked on last night before I started playing, I am reading along starting with "A Different Reality" and when I run across a "new" character or being.. or even term, I add it to the Glossary, I am up to chapter 9.

I have also changed a couple thing's that add continuity later, Just a sentence or two, but I think it will make a difference in the long run.

I know that's a good thing - because I read Misty Lackey back when she was published the first time. Now, I would have been fine without the glossary - but when I went back to look at it, things made a lot more sense.

I can't remember the name of the book now, but I remember the story very well ( and I can still see the cover art).. and until the end when I saw the Glossary, I was never sure what some of the thing's were that the Author was talking about. The second reading of the book made much more sense.

So the article hit a spot of memory and made a lot of sense to me.

So I finished the "5 steps" book.. and reading both my book's.

I added and took out a couple lines here and there, to my book's.. mostly to make them read a bit better, but also to change a couple thing's I thought needed to be a bit different. I also added the POV to most pages.. will probably add it to most of the pages. Next I'm going to take notes, do the whole glossary thing.. and make sure the continuity is good (which some of the above took care of)

The 5 step book has a lot of good information, some of which I will not be following strictly because of the $$$... to edit ONE of my books professionally ( all the thing's you did Sis, plus continuity and scan, feedback & having it ebook and print ready) would cost around $1200+ .. Yeah, no.. I don't have that kinda money.. and won't borrow on that kinda spec. ( So I'll be doing most of that myself )

IMO even without going through very slowly.. I have seen less fribbles than in some printed books. and I will go through both 2 or more times..

<sigh> I came up with exactly what I want in cover art. That I can afford.. If I don't do them both at the exact same time.. which, is one of the thing's many of the articles say I should do.. ( get them out very closely together that is ). I am going to try and do what I want myself, but if I can't it's simple enough.

Matt cobalt blue background, with a "horse made of water" running ( 3/4s facing ) across the page..
something like this...

Either Gold or Silver writing on the page.. I think silver as it would go better with blue.. but gold might stand out better.

The second book would be in a deep / red/ bronze.. with a dragon made of flames flying across the cover
Spoiler: click to toggle

That letting would be gold.. as it would look really good against that background.

Simple.. but I think very eye catching.
