The formula would be easy to calculate. We already have a multiplier for difficultly so dividing by hours played would just be one more step at the end. So, the formula would look like this. 1. Calculate score. 2. Multiply score by difficulty factor depending on what difficulty setting you are playing. 3. Divide that result by total hours played (as shown on your final save). |

If the competition went on for months I would not need to divide the score by hours played. The issue I have is with the timed competitions. What frequently happens in a timed competition is this: After a month several players have racked up a couple hundred hours and most have died and everyone is ready to quit and count up the score but my character was still alive and I was just getting into him. But it was time to quit and calculate score even though I had kept the character alive because an artificial timer had run out. And of course my score sucked because I only had time for 30 hours instead of being able to sink 200-300 hours or more into him. So, not only does my character’s life get cut short but he gets a crappy score to boot. It just wasn’t fun after a while playing under those circumstances. If it really was “play until you are dead,” I’d be happy. My problem is that the competitions have never been pure DiD. They have always been timed and that timer has always weighed more heavily on me than anything else about the competitions, since most of my characters have survived until the end and the couple who have not survived only died because I got extremely reckless as the timer was running out, preferring suicide by falmer to forced retirement. If there were a way to remove the timer so I can play my character until natural death (instead of forced death because a timer is running out) I would be very happy but none of the ways discussed previously for doing that ever worked. |

Time should be simple. Divide the score by the time. Shorter times would naturally increase the final value, BUT most likely the score would also be shorter because less accomplished. Score of 100 divided by 10 hours = a final score of 10. Score of 1000 divded 100 hours = a final score of 10. Level playing field between someone with little or lots of time to play. That's a very simplified example, but I think it's doable. :) Edit1: I seriously do not get this website. I even hovered over the last page number and it did NOT show more posts! Turija's got it already. :hugs: Edit2: Perhaps we need a simple definition change instead of DiD per se what if it were YOLO. You Only Live Once and you play until you die (or do absolutely everything in the game and retire). ;) Edited by Brambleberry, Apr 18 2018, 09:02 AM.

Here's a slightly different proposition...Two different forms of competition: 1. The limited time/objective "rounds" that we've been playing here. They can be dead-is-dead, death-with-consequences, or whatever, on a case-by-case basis. 2. Open-ended "stat" competition, dead-is-dead only. This would be a never-ending competition, and we would maintain an ongoing Statistics registry. Stats would be any of the stats recorded by the game itself, as well as any other "collections" or other accomplishments that the player decided to announce as an objective. In this open-ended competition, a player would be required to enter a character the way we do with our "rounds," along with a mod list showing advantages/disadvantages. The player could then continue to play that character until Death, at which time any new record stats would be posted. We could even keep separate records for different difficulty levels. This could be as complex, or as simple, as we want to make it. (I can see the use for some sort of spreadsheet.) |

That sounds fine with me. We could still divide the scores for the short term competitions by the number of hours to level the playing field a bit on that. And as a separate thread (or threads) we could also have a long term competition that would be more like the old ongoing DiD thread from Bethsoft, but with stats and some type of a leaderboard/ladder for noteworthy playthroughs. |

That sounds pretty good... I think Kanes Idea of a Cartographer works really well with the idea of an open-ended "Stat" based competition...Dead is Dead.. because of the nature of an open-ended. competition or perhaps Challenge (??). it's not like one has to hurry along. We can of course start a thread to discuss the particulars.. or just use this one and then have Richard start up an "official" thread. |

Do as you like, Areial. But maybe starting a new thread would be best. I like the time divided score, it's a great idea! And the idea for a longer competition as well. |
