Jun had been to meet the Greybeards, delved into Ustengrav and seen many a thing on his journey. It was not until he'd gone looking for the Crystal Dragon that flew away from their fight at mount Anthor that he came across this most curiously amazing beast.

High above the curious beast Jun could see a Flag waving in the wind. Being of an inquisitive nature he decided to postpone his hunt for the Crystal Dragon and see why the location high above was worthy of such a marker.

Funny how things connect. Shakey's Pizza...I met my wife in a Shakey's. :)
I worked in a Shakey's I think in 1970 for a few months. :)

There was really only ever one Shakey's, and it was interdimensional. All of space and time intersected in Shakey's for a few months in 1970.

Jeez. If I wanted to drink I had FAR better places to go than Shakeys.

For instance. Alpine Village Inn. Near the Sahara. The food was to DIE FOR. Beginning with the soup (which, I don't care what you find online purporting to be the "original' - is NOT in any way shape or form "the soup.")

They had all sorts of really seriously imported from Germany beers and ales and lagers. ALL of them were better by far than anything American.

And then there was the soup. And the sweet and sour red cabbage. And the schnitzel. And the darkest pumpernickel home-baked you've ever had, plus the home-churned sweet butter.

I died a bit inside when they went out of business. The only German place I've ever eaten food as good was the Dog House in Stuttgart.

Each to her own. I - feel about Shakeys the same way I feel about Pizza Hut.

Um... Nope. Not going there. *shudder*

When you're 17 years old you have limited choices... In fact, I got fired for drinking on the job now that I think about it. No, I wasn't drunk. I was drinking beer with the pizza I made for my lunch and I was only 17...

Eh.... depends. When I was 17, I had plenty of choices. Making the wrong ones was all on me. Pizza wasn't one of them - there were TWO pizza places in Vegas then, one of which was in the Sahara on the Strip. I didn't have any access to that one.

So - Mamma Mia's it was. And that was - seriously yummy pizza. I've never found anything better - until Papa Murphy's. Which you order exactly how you want, and take it home to bake it yourself.

Chain brand pizza is - just not - good enough.

I think maybe you missed part of this conversation.

I met my wife in Shakey's. My friends hung out there on Friday nights. One of my friends played ragtime piano there.

It was the local "beer garden," a casual place where you could talk, sing, drink beer, and make new friends.

It wasn't about the pizza, although the pizza wasn't bad.

Shakey's was originally not a fast-food chain. They were more of a tavern, featuring live entertainment, quality beer, and reasonably good pizza and sandwiches. It was a franchise, so the restaurants varied a lot in quality. The chain was eventually sold out, and most of the restaurants closed. What remains now is not the same thing.

I'd say that depends... The Shakeys I worked at was owned by an Italian immigrant who was also a perfectionist. When you made pizza in his restaurant, you'd damned well better be a perfectionist too, or he'd send Guido to have a talk with you... Eh, actually, he'd just fire you but Guido fit nicely, don't you think?

The question really boils down to whether the store is corporate or a locally owned franchise. Anyway, he really didn't want to fire me. I was married, had a kid who was a few months old, and most of my buddies were either on their way to Viet Nam or one of the two Cs (College or Canada). In his words "Who the hell would have the right to tell me I can't have beer with my pizza, eh?" (imagine that with a heavy accent)

Shakeys was nothing more than an early fast food joint. I'm glad you met your wife there - but the pizza was crap. The only thing I ever cared about was edibility. The only people I met at Shakeys were - not people I wanted to know. But at that time, it was marginally edible - and the only place close to home that provided something other than burgers and fries (which I didn't then and don't now eat).

If its an existential event for you - well, that works. But not for me.

Sere you actually said a very key point... Shakey's was a very early fast food joint.. and I am going to guess that like Fat Boy's.. how good the food was depended on a few things.. the cook.. the owner and the person's perspective who is eating it.

Most of the people in my home town said that Antonio's had the best pizza.. to me it had to much crust, to much sauce, to much cheese and not enough meat's and veggies.. ie.. more of the "cheap" stuff.. JJ's on the other hand, had pizza I loved.

Let's all please remember that we are allowed our own opinions.. and keep it friendly... How you say something is just as important as what is said.. and intent isn't always obvious in writing.

hmmm this is the second post I've come across where the first 2 images display fine, but the last image is broken. I think the other one was Saki's bike pics. I could see the first 2, but the 3rd pic was broken. Anyone else having that issue?
